Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Memories of my Africa: enjoying Africa and its people consists of thirty-one short stories. They describe the author's experiences from 1964 through 2007 in the African countries where he lived and worked as a physics teacher and a trainer of physics teachers in Uganda, Botswana and Ethiopia. I have written down my experiences there as they happened, without adding or embellishing. The informative book also features black and white photos taken by the author and his wife. The news about Africa is not good news. We hear of corruption, famine, war, and genocide. My aim in publishing this book is to show another side of Africa, a more positive side than one usually finds in the news. I want people to know that Africa is a nice place and that Africans are wonderful people. Bob Landheer lived and worked in Africa as a teacher for a total of eleven years. Those were the best years of my life I don't deny all the bad things that have been and are happening. But there is a more positive side to Africa also. This is what my book is about. He wrote this book for his grandchildren. Now retired, he lives in Hilversum, the Netherlands. Publisher's website: http: //sbpra.com/BobLandhee

Book Being Black in the World

    Book Details:
  • Author : N. Chabani Manganyi
  • Publisher : Wits University Press
  • Release : 2019-09-01
  • ISBN : 1776144627
  • Pages : 176 pages

Download or read book Being Black in the World written by N. Chabani Manganyi and published by Wits University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-01 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: N. Chabani Manganyi is one of South Africa’s most eminent intellectuals and an astute social and political observer of his time. He has had a distinguished career in psychology, education and in government, and has written widely on subjects relating to ethno-psychiatry, autobiography, black artists and race. Being-Black-In-The-World, one of his first publications, was written in 1973 at a time of global socio-political change and renewed resistance to the brutality of apartheid rule, including the Durban strikes of 1973 and the emergence of Black Consciousness. Publication of the book was delayed until the young Manganyi had left the country (to study at Yale University) as his publishers feared that the apartheid censorship board and security forces would prohibit him from leaving the country, and perhaps even incarcerate him, for being a ‘radical revolutionary’. Like Fanon in Black Skins, White Masks, Manganyi expressed the vileness of the racist order and its effect on the human condition. While the essays in this book are clearly situated in the material and social conditions of that time, they also have a timelessness that speaks to our contemporary concerns regarding black subjectivity, affectivity and corporeality; the persistence of a racial (and racist) order; and the possibilities of a renewed de-colonial project. Each of these short essays can be read as self-contained reflections on what it meant to be black during the apartheid years. At the same time Manganyi weaves a tight and interconnected argument that gives the book a quiet cohesiveness. He is a master of understatement, and yet this does not stop him from making incisive political criticisms of black subjugation under apartheid. The essays will reward close study for anyone trying to make sense of black subjectivity and the persistence of white insensitivity to black suffering. Ahead of its time, the ideas in this book are an exemplary demonstration of what a thoroughgoing and rigorous de-colonial critique should entail.

Book Mapping the Interior Memories of Africa

Download or read book Mapping the Interior Memories of Africa written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis takes the form of a literary memoir relating my experiences in East Africa, both as the child of missionaries and as a young adult returning to teach. In crafting a memoir of my thirteen years in Africa, I hope to explore a number of issues relating to place and identity formation. Like many missionary children and others who have grown up in cultures not their own, I struggled with the sense that I belonged neither in East Africa nor in the United States, the place my parents called "home." My relationship to East Africa remains complex. On the one hand, I came to love it with a fierceness I have yet to fully understand. Yet because of the stain of colonialism, I am forced to wonder whether or not I even have the right to do so. In an age of postmodern disorientation and postcolonial displacement, an examination of the attachment to and disengagement from place seems a topic worthy of consideration. For me as a child, Africa was a place of adventure. My memories are predominantly of the frontier atmosphere, the vaguely lawless feeling of life on the edge. As a member of an elite minority, I was able to enjoy many aspects of this paradise that most of its inhabitants will never know. In retrospect, the great sadness of my time in Africa was the way in which I was almost totally isolated from the African people themselves. Tall hedges, comparatively great wealth, and a vast cultural chasm divided my family from them. While the motives of my parents and many other missionaries were genuine, the fact remained that our position was privileged and our lives relatively easy. The memoir opens with a scene in which young African boys hurl stones at a group of white missionary children walking their bicycles along a dusty road. The flight of the stone that struck me, the sound of my bicycle clattering to the ground, and the sight of my blood trickling into the dust have remained with me ever since. Only now am I beginning to realize the value inherent in that pai.

Book Shadows On The Grass

  • Release : 2021-05-03
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 68 pages

Download or read book Shadows On The Grass written by Karen Blixen and published by . This book was released on 2021-05-03 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blixen takes up the absorbing story of her life in Kenya begun in the unforgettable Out of Africa, which she published under the name of Isak Dinesen. With warmth and humanity these four stories illuminate her love both for the African people, their dignity and traditions, and for the beauty and wildness of the landscape. The first three were written in the 1950s and the last, 'Echoes from the Hills', was written especially for this volume in the summer of 1960 when the author was in her seventies. In all they provide a moving final chapter to her African reminiscences. Three nice old ladies and a criminal, who is even nicer, are discussing the war over a cup of tea. The criminal, who is the hostess, calls it a dish of tea, which shows that she comes from Caledonia; but that is not her crime.

Book The Flame Trees of Thika

Download or read book The Flame Trees of Thika written by Elspeth Huxley and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2000-02-01 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an open cart Elspeth Huxley set off with her parents to travel to Thika in Kenya. As pioneering settlers, they built a house of grass, ate off a damask cloth spread over packing cases, and discovered—the hard way—the world of the African. With an extraordinary gift for detail and a keen sense of humor, Huxley recalls her childhood on the small farm at a time when Europeans waged their fortunes on a land that was as harsh as it was beautiful. For a young girl, it was a time of adventure and freedom, and Huxley paints an unforgettable portrait of growing up among the Masai and Kikuyu people, discovering both the beauty and the terrors of the jungle, and enduring the rugged realities of the pioneer life.

Book Historical Memory in Africa

Download or read book Historical Memory in Africa written by Mamadou Diawara and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2010 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A vast amount of literature--both scholarly and popular--now exists on the subject of historical memory, but there is remarkably little available that is written from an African perspective. This volume explores the inner dynamics of memory in all its variations, from its most destructive and divisive impact to its remarkable potential to heal and reconcile. It addresses issues on both the conceptual and the pragmatic level and its theoretical observations and reflections are informed by first-hand experiences and comparative reflections from a German, Indian, and Korean perspective. A new insight is the importance of the future dimension of memory and hence the need to develop the ability to 'remember with the future in mind'. Historical memory in an African context provides a rich kaleidoscope of the diverse experiences and perspectives--and yet there are recurring themes and similar conclusions, connecting it to a global dialogue to which it has much to contribute, but from which it also has much to receive.

Book excerpt: Eight-year-old Mary Ann Simkins was about to embark on a new life in a faraway place. Traveling far from her familiar home, she was on a journey to a life of adventure through the wild bush of Africa, where she would stand face-to-face with a rhinoceros and run as fast as she could from a troop of baboons. An adventure that would also eventually lead her to experience the vibrancy of life and culture in the tropics of West Africa and the exhilaration of life near the ocean. Though apprehension had loomed when she left her native land, it soon melted when she arrived in old Rhodesia with her missionary parents and found instant bonds with the generous and loving African people, as well as the missionaries on the outpost station. She found herself falling in love, not just with them, but with the wild, expansive and untamed land to which she had come. Follow one girl's journey to a new world, and yet a very old one. Filled with thought-provoking and inspiring narratives, Memories of an African Sun honors the great peoples of the African continent and shares their hope for a bright future.
