Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories Men the Saved the Union Pure hero worship is healthy. It stimulates the young to deeds Of heroism, stirs the Old to unselfish efforts, and gives the masses models Of manhood that tend to lift humanity above the common-place meanness of ordinary life. The better instincts of the human race have, through all the ages, recog nized and elevated its heroes into something like objects of religious worship. TO such, songs of praise have been sung, eulogies made eloquent, histories written, and great monuments erected. When gods were created by men, their deities began as heroes, and it was what they did on earth that gave them existence and sovereignty in heaven. I remembered the houses of stone and hewn logs standing close on the road, with closed doors and blinds, the cheering of the men belonging to other divis ions who were lounging ou the rough flagging behind their stacked muskets as we swung by, the crowds of officers and the ranks of held horses which choked the public square in front of the brick building where army head-quar ters had been established. Watching them and learning to know and love them sparked the idea for this book.

Book Letters Journals and Memories of E Huntington Blatchford 1920 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Letters Journals and Memories of E Huntington Blatchford 1920 Classic Reprint written by Eliphalet Huntington Blatchford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-11 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Letters, Journals and Memories of E. Huntington Blatchford, 1920 There is a courage born of combativeness. It characterizes the man who rejoices in a fight; like Job's horse, he saith among the trumpets Ha, Ha! And he smelleth the battle afar off, the thunder of the captains and the shouting. But there is another kind of courage, - that of one who hates war, but hates wrong more than he hates war; who dares to receive wounds, and, what to him is more difficult, dares to give wounds if it be in obedience to the call of duty. That is what I mean by a chivalrous courage. This was the kind of courage that sent Huntington Blatchford to the Philippines, when his country called its young men to the colors to defend a neighbor, Oppressed by a sixteenth century government which had survived in the nineteenth century. When Eliphalet Huntington Blatchford's new name was written in his forehead I wonder if it was not Greatheart. Book Memories of the Classical Underworld in Irish and Caribbean Literature

Download or read book Memories of the Classical Underworld in Irish and Caribbean Literature written by Madeleine Scherer and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-09-20 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classical Memories is an intervention into the field of adaptation studies, taking the example of classical reception to show that adaptation is a process that can be driven by and produce intertextual memories. I see ‘classical memories’ as a memory-driven type of adaptation that draws on and reproduces schematic and otherwise de-contextualised conceptions of antiquity and its cultural ‘exports’ in, broadly speaking, the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. These memory-driven adaptations differ, often in significant ways, from more traditional adaptations that seek to either continue or deconstruct a long-running tradition that can be traced back to antiquity as well as its canonical points of reception in later ages. When investigating such a popular and widespread set of narratives, characters, and images like those that remain of Graeco-Roman antiquity, terms like ‘adaptation’ and ‘reception’ could and should be nuanced further to allow us to understand the complex interactions between modern works and classical antiquity in more detail, particularly when it pertains to postcolonial or post-digital classical reception. In Classical Memories, I propose that understanding certain types of adaptations as intertextual memories allows us to do just that.

Download or read book Incidents in India and Memories of the Mutiny written by F. W. Pitt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Incidents in India and Memories of the Mutiny: With Some Records of Alexander's Horse and the 1st Bengal Cavalry When you know that a man has spent about forty years amongst Indians in India, somehow or other you begin to imagine that he must have acquired at least a little ferocity, if only in countenance. This was the mistake I was guilty of, when first I was expecting to meet the subject of these pages, General W. R. E. Alexander, late Commander of the 1st Bengal Cavalry. It was therefore a pleasing disappointment to find him a genial, hearty man of about middle height, bright and active, with a sunny smile which half prepared one for the crisp, firm speech, that only an Irish tongue can crystallize.
