Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of Eighty Years: Autosketches, Random Notes and Reminiscences T has seemed to me desirable to perfect, so far as possi ble, the Genealogical Records of the Hollister and Chamberlin families, with which I am connected. To this end I have sought their records from various sources and recorded them at length in our Family Bible, a brief synopsis of which is here given. Of our English ancestors but little can be learned, from the fact that, by reason of the War of Independence, so alienated were the colonies from the mother country that few of our American families cared to maintain relationship with their kindred in England and were indifferent as to the records which might relate them to their ancestors. SO far as I have been able to connect our families with their antecedents the results are here brie y outlined. Book excerpt: Who was the first to write about a certain disease, diagnose it, and treat it? This book answers those questions for a wide range of diseases, from Abetalipoproteinemia to Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. What were the medical practitioners of previous generations hoping to achieve? What were their patients expecting of them? The answers are found in these quotations. Containing over 3,000 entries, and now updated with more than 450 new quotations, this new edition of ""Medicine in Quotations"" is the most comprehensive collection of its type published in over 30 years. It is much more than a random collection of famous sayings relating to sickness and health, disease and treatment; it is a portrait of medicine throughout recorded history. You will discover how medical concepts and practices have developed and shifted through the millennia, and how many illnesses recognized today were first identified a thousand or more years ago. Quotations are organized by topic, and each is fully referenced, allowing curious readers to return to the original source. Subject and author indices make it easy to find quotations of interest. ""Medicine in Quotations"" is an invaluable resource for writers, speakers, and all those interested in the history of medicine.

Book The Children of Athena

Download or read book The Children of Athena written by Thomas Goebel and published by Lit Verlag. This book was released on 1996 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: " The rise of the professions is a ubiquitous feature of all modern industrial societies, nowhere more so than in the United States. But the historical investigation of the creation of a credentialed society still leaves much to be desired, particularly with regard to the social history of the professions. The book analyzes the background, experiences, and strategies of lawyers, physicians, and engineers in Chicago between 1870 and 1920. Combining the extensive analysis of data on thousands of professionals with the examination of personal papers and professional journals, the study reconstructs the contours of professional lives in the bustling Midwestern metropolis. As the professions struggled to cope with the integration of a diverse membership and the effects of professional specialization, they constructed occupational communities marked by highly salient boundary lines. In creating a fundamentally new type of occupation, backed by vocational titles, expert knowledge, and state licensing, the American professions played a central role in the evolution of white-collar work in modern America.
