Book Memories of Nine Years in Akk

Download or read book Memories of Nine Years in Akk written by Youness Afroukhteh and published by . This book was released on 2023-07-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the translation of Khátirát-i-Nuh-Sáliy-i-'Akká, the memoirs of Dr Youness Afroukhteh who served 'Abdu'l-Bahá as His trusted secretary and interpreter from 1900-1909. These were difficult years when the Master was imprisoned in the city of 'Akká, His every move subject to misrepresentation by the Arch-breaker of the Covenant and his associates, and even His life in danger. At the same time the period saw the victories of the construction of the Shrine of the Báb and the House of Worship in 'Ishqábád, and the rise of the Cause of Bahá'u'lláh in the West. This important record, published in 1952 on the instructions of Shoghi Effendi, has been described as 'pre-eminent among those works dealing with the history of Covenant-breaking'. At the same time it chronicles the daily life in 'Akká of 'Abdu'l-Bahá and of the little band of devoted believers whose chief joy in life was to be of service to Him; it also describes the pilgrimages to 'Akká of many eminent early Western Bahá'ís including Thomas Breakwell, Hippolyte Dreyfus, Lua Getsinger and Laura Barney, the compiler of Some Answered Questions. Over those nine years Jináb-i-Khán (the title by which Dr Youness Afroukhteh was honoured by 'Abdu'l-Bahá) served the Master in 'Akká as secretary, translator, envoy and physician. His account of some of the most significant events of the period, his graphic and stirring pen-portraits of 'Abdu'l-Bahá, and the description of his own emotions - all expressed in a lively and at time mischievous language of humour and wit - make this volume uniquely memorable.

Download or read book Caught Between written by Abdul Bah and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2007-09-19 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many people in the West have concluded that Islam is inherently a very violent religion, based largely on the upsurge of radical Islam and its willingness to use indiscriminate violence to drive its message. What is more worrying to most though is the seemingly "tacit" approval of most Muslims of this strategy manifested by the lack of strong condemnations from the broader Muslim community. With its close proximity to the Middle East and North Africa and its cultural and commercial ties to the US and the Americas, Europe has naturally become the new logistical center of radical Islam. The book gives an insight of mostly Muslim residents of four major European cities-Amsterdam, Paris, Munich and London-on the causes and effects of terrorism, their role in that struggle, where things are likely headed and some possible solutions to what some have described as a "clash of civilizations". All exchanges between the author and respondents are outlined-straightforward and unfiltered-as they occurred, with some relevant background information to help clarify the particular situation being discussed. It is worth noting that there is no support or indictment of any religion from the author's perspective although it is very interesting to find out how religion is used to justify-sometimes implicitly-the views of the respondents.

Book Memories of Turtle Land

Download or read book Memories of Turtle Land written by Tengku Halimah and published by Partridge Publishing Singapore. This book was released on 2014-04-02 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In todays mobile world, we often live at great distances from our childhood homes. Even if we still live where we grew up, the location has often changed significantly from the days of our youth. Years later, it can be difficult to find ways to share childhood memories of home with our children and friends. Author Tengku Halimah wanted to share her memories of growing up in the eastern state of Malaysia, Trengganu, with the younger generation of her family. In Memories of Turtle Land, she reconnects the familys younger generation to a link that could be lost. She reminisces about childhood days spent in Kuala Trengganu with her siblings and the adventures they shared. Despite the strict upbringing of her father, she and her sisters managed to have fun growing up in a family of twelve. Building on information from her mother, Halimah also touches on the family history and the grandeur of the royal families, while not forgetting the ordinary life she had growing up in Trengganu with her siblings. One of the most important things we can do is to share our memories with a younger generation; it provides them with a sense of a history that they may not otherwise understand. This memoir shares vivid memories, interesting and enlightening to those inside and outside the family.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jennifer Griffiths's At Risk: Black Youth and the Creative Imperative in the Post–Civil Rights Era focuses on literary representations of adolescent artists as they develop strategies to intervene against the stereotypes that threaten to limit their horizons. The authors of the analyzed works capture and convey the complex experience of the generation of young people growing up in the era after the civil rights movement. Through creative experiments, they carefully consider what it means to be narrowed within the scope of a sociological “problem,” all while trying to expand the perspective of creative liberation. In short, they explore what it means to be deemed an “at risk” youth. This book looks at crucial works beginning in 1968, ranging from Sapphire’s Push and The Kid, Walter Dean Myers’s Monster, and Dael Orlandersmith’s The Gimmick, to Bill Gunn’s Johnnas. Each text offers unique representations of Black gifted children, whose creative processes help them to navigate simultaneous hypervisibility and invisibility as racialized subjects. The book addresses the ways that adolescents experience the perilous “at risk” label, which threatens to narrow adolescent existence at a developmental moment that requires an orientation toward possibility and a freedom to experiment. Ultimately, At Risk considers the distinct possibilities and challenges of the post–civil rights era, and how the period allows for a more honest, multilayered, and forthright depiction of Black youth subjectivity against the adultification that forecloses potential.
