Book Flying on Instinct

Download or read book Flying on Instinct written by L. D. Cross and published by Heritage House Publishing Co. This book was released on 2012 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They were nicknamed Snow Eagle, Flying Knight, Bush Angel, Punch, Doc and Wop. They worked in open cockpits and flew through cold, snow and fog without the benefit of radios, maps or weather reports. They flew over the Barrens, frozen lakes, boreal forests and mountain ranges by dead reckoning and line of sight. They landed on makeshift runways, glaciers, muskeg, tundra and glassy lakes. Comrades of the wilderness, they were Canada's early bush pilots. L.D. Cross brings us the incredible stories of the brave and enterprising pilots who rolled back the boundaries of western and northern Canada, delivering mail, medicine, miners and all the supplies needed by frontier settlements. Flying such planes as Curtiss, Bellanca, de Havilland, Fairchild, Junkers, Norseman, Stinson and Vickers, they were the off-roaders of aviation, venturing where no others dared to go. Climb into the cockpit with these pioneering pilots for an exciting trip into Canadian aviation history.

Book excerpt: This 25-session log book is for astrophotographers who want to record as much data for each session as they want. It's for beginners to help establish good imaging session habits early on; for the advanced astrophotographer who wants and needs a consistent place to record and find the data they worked hard to collect, and for the astrophotographer who likes to look back on old records and reminisce about those special sessions. If you are an astrophotographer, whether using a simple setup of a DSLR, lens, and tripod, or a more complex arrangement of telescope, mount, filters, and dedicated astrophotography camera, I hope you will find this log book to be very convenient and useful. Four pages are dedicated to each session, which includes the target, date, and location of the session, equipment used, exposure plan details, environmental information, and two pages for observation and processing notes. The Appendix contains a general checklist for astrophotography sessions, session planning considerations, Bortle scale, seeing scale, transparency scale, a section on ethical astrophotography, commonly-used formulas and unit conversions, and a handy equipment data sheet for specifications often used in common calculations. The framework provides a comprehensive list of data you may want to record, and also serves as a reminder or checklist to use for your imaging session planning and set up. The book format is 6x9, bound with twin loop wire which allows the book to lay flat and for the front cover to be brought all the way around to reduce the size of the footprint of the book next to your laptop on your imaging table. Each book is hand made by the author, so there will be variations in the appearance, end papers, and other aspects of the book. The front cover is 2mm thick book board and the back cover is 2mm thick book board for strength, durability during storage and travel, and provides a solid writing surface. The pages are strong 24lb, 90gsm paper, also for durability and long life as a record of your achievements.

Book Captured Memories 1930 1945

Download or read book Captured Memories 1930 1945 written by Peter Liddle and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2011-12-13 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this sequel to his successful first volume Peter Liddle brings his years of Oral History experience to the Thirties and the Second World War. He was the founder/Director of a new archive in 1999 specifically dedicated to the rescue of evidence of the Second World War which now documents the lives of more than nine thousand people in that war. Many of the most vivid recollections he has recorded covering this period appear in this book. For the Thirties poverty is movingly exemplified in recall of orphanage upbringing, labor in an East Lancashire mill and Glasgow childhood. Privileged public schools and university education is here too, with political convictions expressed by Barbara Castle and quite exceptionally by Oswald Mosley. For the War, there is a section on the sea which includes graphic detail of battle, lifeboat command, the St Nazaire Raid, and of Pearl Harbor. A George Medallist and an Admiral of the Fleet add special distinction here. For the air, a Battle of Britain Spitfire Pilot, Britains most successful night-fighter pilot, a Lancaster Bomber Pilot VC, an American pilot shot down over Belgium, surviving to fight with the Resistance, and a German Pilot retaining his national Socialist convictions present outstanding material. For the land, Dunkirk, North Africa, Italy, Singapore, D-Day, Arnhem, the Rhine Crossing, are all there but so Commando raids, SOE operations, capture, escapes, severe wounding, and a VC earned in Somaliland. A German describes the hand to hand fighting at Cassino, a Field Marshal, his service in North Africa, and Joachim Ronneberg his part in the Telemark Raid in Norway. In the Home Front section, women feature prominently was WAAF, Wrens, ATS, Bletchley Park, the Land Army, war work in factories, dance band singing, Blitz experience in several towns, war widowhood, and overseas evacuation, all feature. There is an account of bomb disposal, of the stance of a Conscientious Objector, and then four people quite exceptional for the significance of their material. Two are from Poland, a jewess who survived against all odds, and a woman who became involved in the Warsaw Uprising; the others are Sir Basil Blackwell working on the development of weaponry for the Admiralty and finally Sir Bernard Lovell on radar. This book does much to dissolve the intervening years. The essence of what is was to be young and to be there lies within these pages.

The historical account includes interesting stories that I heard while growing up on a farm near the impoverished town of Fabens, Texas but also while I lived in Fabens as an adolescent. The remainder of the history transpired while living in Horizon City near El Paso, Texas. The memoir presents interesting early life experiences of my father starting from his childhood days. The memoir describes my father’s and mother’s migration to the United States from Mexico that occurred when my father signed up for the “bracero” program which was designed to recruit farm workers from Mexico to work in the United States. The memoir then goes on to present my life experiences starting from the days when I lived on a farm as a child in an adobe/stucco building that was located adjacent to the railroad tracks.

Book Fleet Air Arm Boys

Download or read book Fleet Air Arm Boys written by Steve Bond and published by Grub Street Publishing. This book was released on 2023-09-14 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steve Bond is back with the final volume in this popular series. Unlike his previous three tomes, with their focus on aircraft and rotorcraft, this book is uniquely dedicated to the personnel of the Fleet Air Arm (FAA) themselves. Each chapter will concentrate on the memories of contributors who served in a range of roles, including those below the flight deck. Accounts will focus on the everyday life upon an aircraft carrier as well as the extraordinary challenges faced during operations. There is a fascinating chapter covering exchange services with the RAF and other navies including the French and US; and also insight into the Indian navy’s experience with the Sea Hawk and Sea Harrier. Within the previous volumes, we met some true characters and there is a chapter devoted to people’s memories of them. The closing section entitled ‘Thoughts’ sees contributors reflect on their FAA career with many deeply moving responses and discourses on the future of the service. The book is heavily illustrated throughout in color and black and white with personal photographs from the contributors, artwork and tongue-in-cheek cartoons for which the FAA is famous. Volume Four is the perfect conclusion to the ongoing post-war story of a truly astounding branch of the armed forces.
