Book Carmen Mart n Gaite

Download or read book Carmen Mart n Gaite written by Ester Bautista Botello and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2019-01-09 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reconstructs the poetics of Carmen Martín Gaite by viewing the concept of journey as a fundamental principle upon which she bases and elaborates her narrative writing of the 1990s. Five novels published in this period receive critical attention, all of which coincide with the last trips taken by the writer to New York: Caperucita en Manhattan (1990), Nubosidad variable (1992), La reina de las nieves (1994), Lo raro es vivir (1996) and Irse de casa (1998). To the extent that the journey is the essence of the narrative under consideration, the concept is analysed as an aesthetic practice and an attempt to identify a series of actions, which allow us to link the writer’s novels with two areas that have previously received only scant critical scrutiny: geography and the visual dimension. This book presents a comparative and interdisciplinary analysis of space in Martín Gaite’s narrative as well as in her collages, drawings and paintings.

  • Author : Héctor Vallés
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse
  • Release : 2005-09-15
  • ISBN : 1452069972

Download or read book Memorias Del Sanatorio written by Héctor Vallés and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2005-09-15 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story that unfolds in Memorias del Sanatorio has its beginnings in the mental vortex that engulfs Arnaldo Morales after the suicide of his father. There is no possible resurrection after that fact, and our main character is hospitalized in a quirky mental sanatorioum in Spain, where the sons and daughters of well to do in Latin American families, as well as of the Spanish bourgeois, are hospitalized with the hope of some miraculous cure of their mental illness from which they will continue to suffer in the clinic, year after year, in the hallways and the rooms of the Esquerdo The characters that inhabit these halls of the asylum are markedly interesting in their contorted psychologies, in their delusional systems, in the inventions of the imaginations that lead them somewhere that they do not remotely expect: the end of their shadows past the gray walls, the corridors they follow going nowhere through the center of the despair of their schizophrenias: the end of their delusions that do not provide with a way out. The writer has gotten his material for the novel from his own experience as he walked these corridors, and the streets that appear in the narrative; and of course from the experience of mental illness. One more important aspect of the narrative: The narrator find himself in the streets of Miami Beach throughout the novel, from where he recollects the thirty years past when the remembrances from the sanatorium took place. The world is going to end, like it happens in the end of every millennium, and a new imperator comes to MB to witnesses the executions of the insane.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Conflict Memory Transfers and the Reshaping of Europe

Download or read book Conflict Memory Transfers and the Reshaping of Europe written by Filomena Viana Guarda and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-02-19 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conflict, Memory Transfers and the Reshaping of Europe discusses processes of memory construction associated with the realities of war and genocide, totalitarianism, colonialism as well as trans-border dialogues in the overcoming of conflict memories. It is based on the premise that there are no available clear-cut or definite positions to approach the problematic issues of conflict, memory and history. Consequently, it examines and articulates across several different media discourses, problems, contexts and considerations of value. Its scope is thus deliberately interdisciplinary, drawing on the cross-fertilization of diverse research methods. The book addresses a number of issues and raises questions that have been crucial to our modern thought, and problematic or even inexplicable to any cultural theory that approaches history with an ethical approach. It works through and evaluates ongoing representative processes, strategies and practices, next to longstanding constraints, dilemmas and taboos regarding discussions of contentious matters. The different perspectives from which the issues of conflict, identity and memory are examined, in authoritarian, new European and (post-) colonial contexts, provide examples of power and conflict memory intervening in discourse and areas of cultural practice, destabilizing fixed or encoded meaning. It examines how the “making sense” of our memories—so vital for the qualification of culture and social practices—is about concepts and ideas, as well as emotions and attachments, i.e. meaning resulting from effective social exchange framed by specific contexts of interpretation. As such, the book is also a contribution to a memory culture that is pushing forward the clarification of conflicts, crystallizations of tension and all sorts of threads that bind us, very often invisibly, to the past.

Book Memorias Sobre la Vida Del Presb tero Don Antonio Jos Mart nez

Download or read book Memorias Sobre la Vida Del Presb tero Don Antonio Jos Mart nez written by Pedro Sánchez and published by Lightning Tree Press. This book was released on 1978 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Padre Martínez, priest of Taos, was one of the most dynamic and controversial figures in the political and religious life of the 19th century New Mexico. In the turbulent period of transition from Mexican to U.S. sovereignty, he served on legislative bodies of both governments, established a school, and on the only printing press in the territory printed not only books but the first newspaper west of the Missouri. Conflict over traditional Hispanic church practices led to his excommunication by Bishop Lamy. This brief and loving biography, written by a devoted follower, was first published in 1903. De Aragón's translation adheres faithfully to the language and style of the original Spanish text, convoluted though it sometimes is, preserving the flavor and fervency of Sánchez's personal "memorias".
