Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorials, Vol. 2: Part I. Family and Personal, 1766-1865 I wish to see a colony leave these Shores, composed Of men professing the same faith, members Of the same com munion, and anxious to realise the idea Of ecclesiastical unity in a field where no Obstacle would exist to prevent their doing so. I think the present time eminently fitted for carrying out such a plan. I think there are numbers Of individuals, in all classes Of society, who are uneasy here who not only do not see their way to a comfortable subsistence for themselves and their families, but who are not satisfied with the present state, or future prospects, Of the Church. I am far from meaning, that the pro posed colony should consist solely Of discontented Churchmen I speak Of existing dissatisfactions, only as likely to supply one source from which we may expect recruits. Besides this, colonising enthusiasm (which is an instinct with Englishmen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Complete History of the Origin and Progress of the Late War, Vol. 1 of 2 In the year 1749, some english american traders commenced a traffic with the indians, on the banks of the river Ohio. The french knowing the importance of that country, were desirous to prevent us from trading, or having any communication with those indians; they threatned them with the confiscation of their goods, and imprisonment of their persons, if they did not retire, from what, they were pleased to call, their mailer's territories. Many of the traders immediately withdrew, on receiving this insolent menace; but several others, knowing their own just right, had more spirit; and continued their traffic as usual, notwithstanding the threats denounced against them: and accordingly in 1750, the marquis de la Jonquiere, at that time governor of Canada, sent several detachments of troops to the Ohio, to put their former threats in execution; which they did by seizing four english traders, and confiscating their goods, fending them prisoners to Quebec, from whence they were brought to Rochelle in France, and there detained in prison. These englishmen soon after their arrival at Rochelle, wrote to the earl of Albemarle, our ambassador at Paris, complaining of the ill usage they had received: upon which, that minister wrote a letter to the earl of Holdernesse, secretary of state to the king of England; of which the following is an extract. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Macdonald College Annual, 1933-34, Vol. 2 The choice of appropriate memorial features was a difficult one. The objective set was to secure something which, besides being a fitting tribute, would be permanent and useful. Many different types of memorials were considered before the final selections were made. The four-faced electric clock, as shown in the illustration, forms the central feature. The case is moulded in bronze and is surmounted on all four faces by the College crest, while below appear the dates 1914-1918 and other memorial references. Its location is a central one in the Main Building, where the throngs of present and future students congregate. It fills a long-felt need and fits admirably into its surroundings. The names of the 357 persons who served have been inscribed in a Book of Remembrance which forms the second memorial feature. The material used in the book is genuine morocco leather. The printing is all hand-done in old English, the work of Mr. W. E. Whitehead. It contains a complete record of all memorial features and has a foreword by the late Sir Arthur Currie. This book will be deposited in the College Library in a glass-faced cabinet on its own Special table. The book is to remain always open, with frequent changes of the exposed pages. The third feature included is a group of forty-four oak trees which form a border for the Men's Campus. These were planted and cared for largely through the instrumentality of the Horticultural Department and were specially designed as a memorial to those who gave their lives in the cause. These trees were planted some years ago and are now well established. They, nevertheless, form a definite part of the War Memorial. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorial and Peace Day, May Thirtieth, 1932: Circular No. 260 The spanish-american War and the World's War brought the sons and grandsons of the Grand Army of the Republic and the Con federate Veterans into the same army, under the same flag, shedding their blood for a common cause. It is inevitable that these mighty changes will work somewhat of a change in the original objects of Memorial Day. It will continue to give special honor to those brave men who fought and died to preserve the Union, but it will become more and more a national Memorial Day-a day when our memories of the past are touched by our hopes of the future - a day when we honor all those who have fought nobly for a noble and just cause, as well as those who have labored nobly to remove the causes of national and international wars. Memorial Day must become and remain the day for honoring all those who on battle field, or in church, in school, in business, or in legislative halls, have done what they could to make the nation and the world places where brethren can dwell together in peace and unity. Joy to her peo ple in this, that in the time of greatest need of our beloved country, she raised up and sent forth to succor and to save, three of her sons who seem to have been called of God for this very work. In one of her obscure cabins Abraham Lincoln, all unknown to the world and 1to himself, was being fitted for the supreme command in the great war for the life and liberty of the Nation. In a leather store in Galena, Ulysses S. Grant was being hidden awaiting the moment in time when he would be needed to lead the armies to victory in the great cause. In the pioneer court houses of Southern Illinois, plead ing for justice for the common people, John A. Logan was being pre 'pared for the crisis when he, more than all others, should arouse, enlist, and lead the volunteer soldiers of the North, who were to play -such a large part in the struggle for national union. It 1s well that the school children should study the lives of these great men. Such as these are the morning star of hope to the young who aspire to serve their country in any day and generation. On the occasion of the one hundredth anniversary of his birth, the children were given the opportunity to study the life of Abraham Lincoln. On Memorial Day this year they may learn of the heroic deeds of John A. Logan. On Memorial Day Of 1910 they will be given the Opportunity to study the life and services of Ulysses S. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorial Day Address We are come together to-day to pay our tribute to those who preserved for us the integrity of our country. To them we owe whatever measure of prosperity we enjoy and the advantage we have in the most beneficent form of government the world has seen. It is no perfunctory ceremony. It is rather the sincere expression of our appreciation of what they did and of our profound gratitude for what they have left us. We are in the full enjoyment of privileges so highly prized by mankind that citizens of foreign nations have come to us in very large numbers to share with us what they could not have in the lands of their birth. They equally with us have prospered. It is then to them as well as to ourselves that we should point out why and how these inestimable privileges and opportunities were preserved. However it may be hereafter, nothing worth having in any nation has yet been obtained without the inevitable struggle which has come to all forms of government in all times. So let us mind the lesson and let us also make it plain to the young and to our adopted fellow citizens that they too may understand and appreciate its priceless value. The struggle was long and severe. The price paid in blood and treasure immense. Yet is the gain worth vastly more than the price. With profound appreciation of what they did we place these tokens of our love on the graves of those who are gone. We express our gratitude to those now living who participated in the war of 1861. We show our recognition of their enormous sufferings and sacrifices. And we cherish to-day also the memories of those who, unable to take part in battle, bore their griefs with patient fortitude. Resigned, uncomplaining, they have taken a warm place in the hearts of those who appreciate patriotic sacrifice. That individual instances were inexpressibly sad is shown by the well remembered letter from President Lincoln to Mrs. Bixby, an afflicted widow who had lost five sons in the war. Those who remember the war know that this was but a single instance among thousands. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Civil War in Books written by David J. Eicher and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the assistance of several scholars, including James M. McPherson and Gary Gallagher, and a long-time specialist in Civil War books, Ralph Newman, David Eicher has selected for inclusion in The Civil War in Books the 1,100 most important books on the war. These are organized into categories as wide-ranging as "Battles and Campaigns," "Biographies, Memoirs, and Letters," "Unit Histories," and "General Works." The last of these includes volumes on black Americans and the war, battlefields, fiction, pictorial works, politics, prisons, railroads, and a host of other topics. Annotations are included for all entries in the work, which is presented in an oversized 8 1/2 x 11 inch volume in two-column format. Appendixes list "prolific" Civil War publishers and other Civil War bibliographies, and the works included in Eicher's mammoth undertaking are indexed by author or editor and by title. Gary Gallagher's foreword traces the development of Civil War bibliographies and declares that Eicher's annotation exceeds that of any previous comprehensive volume. The Civil War in Books, Gallagher believes, is "precisely the type of guide" that has been needed. The first full-scale, fully-annotated bibliography on the Civil War to appear in more than thirty years, Eicher's The Civil War in Books is a remarkable compendium of the best reading available about the worst conflict ever to strike the United States. The bibliography, the most valuable reference book on the subject since The Civil War Day by Day, will be essential for college and university libraries, dealers in rare and secondhand books, and Civil War buffs.
