Book excerpt: This collection of biographical sketches celebrates the lives and achievements of some of the most remarkable Protestant missionaries of the 19th and early 20th centuries. From the South Sea Islands to the African interior, from India to China, these brave men and women left their homes and families to bring the gospel to people in distant lands. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorials of Protestant Missionaries to the Chinese: Giving a List of Their Publications, and Obituary Notices of the Deceased, With Copious Indexes The commencement of the Protestant Mission to China was closely connected with a scheme for translating the Scriptures into the native language; a work to which the pioneers devoted much time and attention. Their successors in like manner, have kept this before them as an object of first importance; and the continuous application thus bestowed from the beginning, on this branch of the enterprise, has been productive of results gratifying to every friend of the cause. The incipient labours of Morrison, Marshman and Milne, brought to completion the two first entire translations of the Bible, which appear to have issued from the press simultaneously about the year 1822. No great period was allowed to elapse till this was followed up by revision and amendment, a work which had been contemplated by the first translators, even before their own productions had been given to the public. The combined efforts of Drs. Medhurst, Gutzlaff and Bridgman, in concert with the son of Dr. Morrison, led to the respective versions of the two first-named missionaries. Subsequent to this, the new translation of the New Testament by the Committee of Delegates, issued in 1850, and the Old Testament by the members of the London Mission, some two or three years later, were followed up by a revision of the whole, at the hands of Dr. Bridgman and Mr. Culbertson. Another version of the New Testament had been carried on at the same time, by the Rev. J. Goddard, the agent of the Baptist churches in America; and his work has been for the most part used by the members of that denomination. A complete translation of the New Testament into the Mandarin dialect, chiefly by Dr. Medhurst, has been widely circulated; and a second translation by the resident missionaries at Peking is well on to completion. Translations of the whole New Testament have been made into the local dialects of Ningpo and Fuhchow, and detached portions of the Old and New Testaments have appeared in the Shanghae, Canton, Hakka, Amoy and Kin-hwa dialects. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1885 edition. Excerpt: ... THE MARTYRS OF POLYNESIA. INTRODUCTION. For a number of years it has been upon the mind of the writer to attempt to rear a memorial to the martyrs of Polynesia. The idea was suggested seventeen years ago by a remark, casually thrown out by a brother missionary, to the effect that it was much to be regretted that something had not been done towards perpetuating the memory and usefulness of the men and women who had died as martyrs, in connection with our South Sea Missions. The writer was struck with the remark, and a purpose was formed, [almost forthwith, that, should his life be spared, and the opportunity be afforded, he would make an attempt to supply what seemed to be a manifest lack in the missionary literature of the South Seas. The purpose has gained strength rather than otherwise during the intervening years, in the course of which some distinguished additions have been made to the martyr-roll of Polynesia; and now the long-waited for opportunity is afforded, and the writer enters upon the task which he has set himself, with pleasant anticipations that it will prove to him a labour of love, and that it will subserve in some measure the interests of the great cause of Christian missions. The materials for the accomplishment of the proposed object are, in some cases, rather scanty; and in all, much of what invests ordinary tales of martyrdom with such tender and stirring interest is wanting. The pomp and show and circumstances of earthly tribunals; the touching tales of the heroism and bravery of the victims; their grand testimonies as they were exposed in the amphitheatre, bound to the stake, or subjected to modes of death still more terrible--all these are wanting: nor will there be much to appeal to our feelings of patriotism...

Download or read book The Vintons and the Karens written by Calista V. Luther and published by . This book was released on 2009-10 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calista H. Vinton (1807-1864) and her husband Justus H. Vinton (1806-1858) were the American Baptist missionaries who labored for many years in Burma (now known as Myanmar) preaching the gospel amongst the Karen people. Since Justus and Calista were sufficiently familiar with the Karen language, they immediately commenced their mission work to Karens in the jungles around Moulmein (now known as Mawlamyine). They travelled in native canoes, on horseback, on elephants, on buffalo carts and on foot. At first they went together from village to village preaching to the multitudes. Afterward, they went separately because they received so many invitations from distant villages. The work of preaching was combined with the ministering to the sick. Calista held prayer meetings in villages and Justus worked on the translation of the New Testament into Karen and wrote commentaries.

Book The Martyrs of Polynesia

Download or read book The Martyrs of Polynesia written by A. W. Murray and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Martyrs of Polynesia: Memorials of Missionaries, Native Evangelists, and Native Converts, Who Have Died by the Hand of Violence, From 1799 to 1871 Not much need be said by way of preface to the following pages. The origin and nature of the work are explained in the introduction. Most of the papers have already been given to the Australian public through the medium of periodicals, and they are now collected and offered in their present form to a wider circle in the hope that their usefulness will thereby be extended, and the end of their preparation and publication be further promoted. May the Head of the Church smile on these records, and make them instrumental in awakening a deeper and wider interest in the great cause with which the martyrs of Polynesia were identified in life and in death, and to Him let all the praise redound, world without end.
