Book Britain Greece and the Colonels 1967 74

Download or read book Britain Greece and the Colonels 1967 74 written by Konstantina Maragkou and published by Hurst & Company. This book was released on 2020-01-16 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long history of Anglo-Greek relations has deservedly attracted much attention. One of its most controversial -- yet least explored -- phases was that spanning the Greek Colonels' seven-year military junta, from 1967-74. Drawing on a corpus of diverse, original and largely primary material, Maragkou provides the first comprehensive analysis of British policy towards Greece during this tumultuous era. Not only does she contribute to the historiography of Anglo- Greek relations, but her book also serves as a case study of British foreign policy within the Cold War. And by demonstrating that national history can be best understood by analyzing the relationship between a nation state and factors beyond its control, the conclusions drawn can be applied beyond the strictly regional or the exclusively bi-lateral, as they also fit into a transnational paradigm. It was in the 1960s when what we now term 'globalization' was in full swing. Henceforward, no nation -- and no foreign office -- was an island: it was part of a whole, in which both state and non-state actors internationally played their part in the evolution of thinking on foreign affairs. Here is the key to understanding the tortuous history of Britain and the Greek Colonels -- one that has many echoes in our own time.

Book The West and the Birth of Bangladesh

Download or read book The West and the Birth of Bangladesh written by Richard Pilkington and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2021-08-15 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1971, authorities in West Pakistan, now Pakistan, perpetrated mass atrocities in East Pakistan, now Bangladesh. The West and the Birth of Bangladesh explores responses in Washington, Ottawa, and London during the crucial first months of the crisis, investigating the debates and policies pursued. The United States favoured appeasement of Islamabad. Canada was unwilling to hazard bilateral ties with Pakistan. The UK showed greater willingness to coerce Islamabad into ending its oppression. This insightful book reveals how, even as human rights movements began to emerge in the West, government actors there remained too preoccupied with national interests to take firm action during the crisis.

Book Britain and the Arab Gulf after Empire

Download or read book Britain and the Arab Gulf after Empire written by Simon C. Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-31 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Britain’s formal imperial role in the smaller, oil-rich sheikdoms of the Arab Gulf – Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates – ended in 1971, Britain continued to have a strong interest and continuing presence in the region. This book explores the nature of Britain’s role after the formal end of empire. It traces the historical events of the post-imperial years, including the 1973 oil shock, the fall of the Shah in Iran and the beginnings of the Iran-Iraq War, considers the changing positions towards the region of other major world powers, including the United States, and engages with debates on the nature of empire and the end of empire. The book is a sequel to the authors’ highly acclaimed previous books Britain's Revival and Fall in the Gulf: Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, and the Trucial States, 1950-71 (Routledge 2004) and Ending Empire in the Middle East: Britain, the United States and Post-war Decolonization, 1945-1973 (Routledge 2012).

Book Realism and Human Rights in US Policy toward Greece Turkey and Cyprus

Download or read book Realism and Human Rights in US Policy toward Greece Turkey and Cyprus written by Sotiris Rizas and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-10-15 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme of this book is the interplay between Realism and Human Rights in the formulation of US policy towards Greece and Turkey with respect to the Cyprus and the Aegean disputes and the domestic politics of the two countries from the Truman to the Carter administration. The policies of successive administrations, and those of Johnson and Nixon in the 1960s and 1970s, were formulated upon the requirements of containment as this was conceived in 1946-47 by the Truman administration. Realpolitik dominated the agenda and issues related to values and norms were secondary although not unimportant. Whenever a choice had to be made between realpolitik and human rights the former was the main consideration of American policy-makers. Although committed to the recalibration of US foreign policy toward human rights, the Carter administration did not depart from these premises in the formulation of its policy in the Eastern Mediterranean.
