Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoranda on the Strength of Materials Used in Engineering Construction Many valuable accessions to our knowledge of the strength of materials have been made within a comparatively recent period; the records, however, have been scattered through different books, periodicals, &c. not always accessible or convenient for reference. We have therefore endeavored in this brief essay to bring together and arrange some of the more important elements, both old and new, so as to form an "aide memoire" for the Engineer and Architect, at the drawing office and elsewhere. The sources of information have been given as far as possible, in order that the results may be checked, and opportunities afforded for lengthened investigations, which are beyond the scope of these papers. Wherever it has been necessary to express the strength of any material in tons, we have modified the tables and formulas to admit the use of the American ton of 2,000 lbs. as promotive of simplicity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A foundational work on historical and social studies of quantification What accounts for the prestige of quantitative methods? The usual answer is that quantification is desirable in social investigation as a result of its successes in science. Trust in Numbers questions whether such success in the study of stars, molecules, or cells should be an attractive model for research on human societies, and examines why the natural sciences are highly quantitative in the first place. Theodore Porter argues that a better understanding of the attractions of quantification in business, government, and social research brings a fresh perspective to its role in psychology, physics, and medicine. Quantitative rigor is not inherent in science but arises from political and social pressures, and objectivity derives its impetus from cultural contexts. In a new preface, the author sheds light on the current infatuation with quantitative methods, particularly at the intersection of science and bureaucracy.
