This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorable Women of the Puritan Times, Vol. 2 Mary was a woman of high virtue, and of sincere, though unostentatious piety. To this she added sympathies and warm affections. Only a few of her have been preserved, but in all of them these qualities of mind are eminently conspicuous. One of them, the earliest now extant, or known to be extant, refers to some rumours, perhaps unfounded, which had reached her, bringing into suspicion the conjugal fidelity of her brother Henry. These rumours were to the effect that, to the great grief of his excellent wife, her beloved and much-respected sister-in-law,2 who was worthy of, as she was entitled to his undivided affection, he was too much under the influence of a certain woman, whom she does not choose to name. Having heard this, she cannot enjoy peace in her mind until she has written to him on this matter, which, if true, would bring shame and remorse on himself, and fill the hearts of all the rest of the family with sorrow. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorable Women of the Puritan Times, Vol. 1 After the return of the Protestant exiles to England, upon the accession of Queen Elizabeth to the throne, the puritan battle, of which a miniature specimen had been exhibited at Frankfort, commenced in good earnest on a much wider field. So strong had the puritan party then become that, in' the famous convocation of the Lower House, in the year 15 62, they constituted the majority of those present, though they were out-voted by proxies on the other side. In that assembly they strenuously contended for the abrogation of vestments, copes, surplices, and organs in divine worship; against lay baptism, and the sign of the cross in baptism; and as to kneeling at the Lord's Supper, they urged that it should be left indifferent to the determination of the ordinary.3 The divines on the other side held fast by King Edward vi.'s Liturgy, and fortified their position from the vene rated names of Cranmer, Ridley, and others, by whomxit had been framed, and who had sealed the Reformation with their blood. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Puritans, Vol. 2 of 5: Or Protestant Nonconformists; From the Reformation in 1517 to the Revolution in 1688 The Editor, in revising the first volume of Mr. Neal's "History of the Puritans," was greatly assisted by the authors "Review of the principal facts objected to in that volume." In the volume which is now presented to the public, such aid fails him, as it will also in the succeeding ones, since Dr. Grey's "Examination" did not make its appearance till the declining state of Mr. Neal's health prevented his farther vindication of his work. The justice due to Mr. Neal's memory and to truth, required the Editor to attempt what could have been done by the author himself with much greater advantage than at this distance of time, from the first statement of the facts, by one who cannot come at all the authorities on which Mr. Neal spake. He has endeavoured, however, to acquit himself with care and impartiality in the examination of Dr. Grey's animadversions, and is not aware that he has passed over any material strictures, extended through a volume of four hundred pages. Though Dr. Grey's "Examination" may be now little known or sought after, it received, at its first publication, the thanks of many divines of the first eminence; particularly of Dr. Gibson, then bishop of London, and of Dr. Sherlock, then bishop of Salisbury. The latter prelate, writing to the doctor, said, "It is happy that Mr. Neal's account appeared when there was one so well versed in the history, and so able to correct the errors and prejudices. The service you have done must be considered as a very important one by all the friends of the constitution of the church of England."
