Download or read book Memoirs of the Russian Revolution written by George V. Lomonossoff and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the Russian Revolution Immediately after the March Revolution, I made some notes concerning what I had personally witnessed. These memoranda I took with me to America but so successfully mislaid them among my books that I was not able to locate them until August 2, 1918. I read them then to my friends in Chicago. They insisted and still insist that I publish these recollections. To be frank, I could hardly consent to it; my views have somewhat radically changed in the last two years and I have a strong desire to correct some of my memoranda and to change others entirely. Nevertheless, I have not done this. If my memoirs have any historical value, it is only in the way in which they were first recorded. An historian is interested not only in the naked facts, but also in the way in which these facts reacted on the men of their time. Nevertheless, in some places, I have considered it necessary to make some additional remarks which are the result of my later ideas and of the later experiences of my life. Book Memoirs of a Revolutionary

Download or read book Memoirs of a Revolutionary written by Victor Serge and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 577 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Review Books Original Victor Serge is one of the great men of the 20th century —and one of its great writers too. He was an anarchist, an agitator, a revolutionary, an exile, a historian of his times, as well as a brilliant novelist, and in Memoirs of a Revolutionary he devotes all his passion and genius to describing this extraordinary—and exemplary—career. Serge tells of his upbringing among exiles and conspirators, of his involvement with the notorious Bonnot Gang and his years in prison, of his role in the Russian Revolution, and of the Revolution’s collapse into despotism and terror. Expelled from the Soviet Union, Serge went to Paris, where he evaded the KGB and the Nazis before fleeing to Mexico. Memoirs of a Revolutionary recounts a thrilling life on the front lines of history and includes vivid portraits not only of Trotsky, Lenin, and Stalin but of countless other figures who struggled to remake the world. Peter Sedgwick’s fine translation of Memoirs of a Revolutionary was abridged when first published in 1963. This is the first edition in English to present the entirety of Serge’s book.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Little Grandmother of the Russian Revolution: Reminiscences and Letters of Catherine Breshkovsky Even when his brow grew cloudy and his manner stem, the children were never afraid Of him. Neither her father nor her mother ever made an enemy. Her father was frank and open-hearted, with a hot temper that revolted against injustice. He often told the other landowners just what he thought of their pretences and their brutal treatment of their subordinates; but these outbursts were never laid up against him. He was universally respected and liked. His chief pleasure was to sit alone and read the works of liberal writers. Her mother was not so handsome as her father, but had an intelligent and amiable face, exquisite manners, and irreproachable tact. She had attended school at the well-known Smolin Convent in Petro grad, and was a woman of culture. She was sincerely religious. She cared little for the pomps and cere monies of the Greek Church, but brought her children up on the gospels, and on beautiful stories of holy men and women. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dawn in Russia: Or Scenes in the Russian Revolution I have not attempted in this book to do more than describe some of the scenes which I witnessed in Russia during the winter of I905 - Igo6, while I was acting there as special correspondent for the Daily Cbrouicle. For the most part, the descriptions are given in the same words which I wrote down at the time, either for my own memory or for the news paper. But the whole has been re-arranged and rewritten, while certain scenes have been added for which a daily paper has no room. I have also inserted between the scenes a bare outline of the principal events that were happening elsewhere, so that the Significance of what I saw may be more easily understood, and the dates become something better than mere numbers. It was the regular night express to Petrograd, correspond ing somewhat to the Congressional Limited between New York and Washington. A few miles out of Moscow a difference arose between the engineer and the stoker, and in order to settle it they stopped the train and had a fight. One of the men hit the other on the head with a monkey wrench, injuring him pretty badly. Authority of some kind stepped in and arrested the assailant. The engineer's cab was blood-stained, and some authority unhitched the engine and sent it back to Moscow as evidence. The train all this time, with its hundreds of passengers, stood on the tracks waiting for a new engine and crew, and if it was not run into and wrecked it was because it was lucky. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Liberty to Brestlitovsk: The First Year, of the Russian Revolution I have tried in this book to elucidate, as far as was in my power, the development of the fundamental ideas of the Socialist parties in the Russian Revolution and their reflection in the life of the masses. A revolution is a very complex thing, especially in such an immense country as Russia, with its large and varied population, and it goes without saying that, far from claiming to have described it exhaustively, I realise only too clearly that there are numbers of questions on which I have barely touched. Book The Soul of the Russian Revolution Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Soul of the Russian Revolution Classic Reprint written by Moissaye Joseph Olgin and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-08 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Soul of the Russian Revolution The task is colossal. Scientific and artistic work of generations will be required to complete it. Not even in the Russian language have the various phases of the revo lution been given adequate study. Many a field, such as the reflection of the revolution in Russian belles Iettres, to which parts of this book are devoted, have not hitherto been investigated at all. Moreover, the work of a Russian writing in English is greatly embarrassed by the consciousness of the fact that the Russian char acter and Russian history are little familiar on this side of the Atlantic. Under such circumstances, the present work can be only a review of the great movement in its most significant manifestations, and an attempt to convey to the American reader a better understanding of the character, the motives and the aspirations of the various parts of the Russian nation engaged in the revolution. Ten million peasants dragged from their ploughs were dying in the trenches. Millions more were perishing of cold and hunger in the cities While the corrupt ministers intrigued with the Germans and the court held bacchanalian revels with the notorious monk, Rasputin. Even the Cadet, Milyukov, was forced to say: History does not know Of another govern ment so stupid, so dishonest, so cowardly, so treacherous. All governments rest Upon the patience Of the poor. It seems everlasting, but there comes an end to it. It came in Russia in March, 1917. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
