Download or read book Pierre Daniel Huet 1630 1721 and the Skeptics of his Time written by José R. Maia Neto and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-28 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a detailed and scholarly historical and philosophical examination of French scepticism from Descartes to the beginning of the Enlightenment by examining the views of Pierre-Daniel Huet (1630–1721). It shows the crucial role played by Huet in the modification of the early modern sceptical tradition: from a practical perspective closer to ancient scepticism, mostly presented by Montaigne and Charron, to an epistemological and metaphysical perspective strongly influenced by Descartes’s doubt. The book examines and gives original interpretations of the various sceptical (and semi-sceptical) views held in the period and their connections to Huet’s own scepticism. Besides known philosophers such as Descartes, Gassendi, Pascal and Bayle, the book also accesses sceptical views held by secondary figures such as La Mothe Le Vayer and Simon Foucher and others who have not thus far been connected to the sceptical tradition such as Jean-Baptiste du Hamel and Madeleine de Scudéry. The book is useful for scholars in the field of early modern ideas: philosophical, religious and scientific.

Download or read book The Good Cartesian written by Steven Nadler and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-04-12 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Steven Nadler presents a biographical and philosophical study of Louis de La Forge (1632-1666), an important but underappreciated (and understudied) follower of René Descartes (1596-1650) who made a major contribution to making Cartesianism the dominant philosophical paradigm of the seventeenth century. La Forge was a devoted and faithful, but not uncritical, disciple who defended, updated, and even corrected Descartes' metaphysics, physics, and physiology, both to move Cartesian system to greater internal coherence and to make it more consistent with the latest scientific developments.

Download or read book The Romance between Greece and the East written by Tim Whitmarsh and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-14 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contact zones between the Greco-Roman world and the Near East represent one of the most exciting and fast-moving areas of ancient-world studies. This new collection of essays, by world-renowned experts (and some new voices) in classical, Jewish, Egyptian, Mesopotamian and Persian literature, focuses specifically on prose fiction, or 'the ancient novel'. Twenty chapters either offer fresh readings - from an intercultural perspective - of familiar texts (such as the biblical Esther and Ecclesiastes, Xenophon of Ephesus' Ephesian Story and Dictys of Crete's Journal), or introduce material that may be new to many readers: from demotic Egyptian papyri through old Avestan hymns to a Turkic translation of the Life of Aesop. The volume also considers issues of methodology and the history of scholarship on the topic. A concluding section deals with the question of how narratives, patterns and motifs may have come to be transmitted between cultures.
