Book Legendary Fictions of the Irish Celts Classic Reprint

Download or read book Legendary Fictions of the Irish Celts Classic Reprint written by Patrick Kennedy and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Legendary Fictions of the Irish Celts Though the subject of this volume seems light and frivolous enough, it might be preceded, and accompanied, and concluded by grave and tiresome dissertations; and if our hopes were limited to its perusal by readers of an archaeological turn, we would freely exhaust all the philosophy of fiction in our possession upon them. But from our early youth we have felt the deepest interest in the stories and legends which are peculiar to the Irish, or which they possess in common with all the Indo-European races, and our dearest wish is that their memory should not fade from the minds of the people. They have existed in one form or other from long before the Christian era, and have been mainly preserved by oral tradition among the unlettered. Taking into consideration the diminishing of our population by want and emigration, and the general diffusion of book-learning, such as it is, and the growing taste for the rubbishy tales of the penny and halfpenny journals, we have in these latter times been haunted with the horrid thought that the memory of the tales heard in boyhood would be irrecoverably lost. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literature of the Celts, Its History and Romance There is undoubtedly a charm in the thought that all over the Continent of Europe, in the libraries of many of its romantic cities and towns, there are scores of mss., some of them upwards of a thousand years old, fugitives in the early times from these much harassed islands; and that European scholars of the highest erudition, such as Zeuss, Ebel, N igra, Ascoli, Windisch, Zimmer, and Whitley Stokes have been profoundly interested in these literary relics, and have devoted much of their time to the work of studying, translating, elucidating, and editing the Gaelic texts or glosses found in them. To-day the number of those engaged in similar research at home and abroad is vastly on the increase, and augurs well for the future of this department of knowledge. It was the death-lament for Conor the King we sang, my honoured lord, and inasmuch as he hath died but a short time since, we feared you sorrowed for him in silence. And because our battle-strains or strains of love have been powerless to win you from your grief, in our affection we have fallen in with this mood, and have joined in your regrets. Book The Wisdom of the Celts

Download or read book The Wisdom of the Celts written by Dr. Patrica King and published by Citadel Press. This book was released on 2018-07-31 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literature, history, and thoughts of an ancient and great people THE WISDOM OF THE CELTS Proud, spiritual, artistic, scholarly—the ancient Celts were people ahead of their time, and the Celtic world, which stretched from the British Isles to Gallatia, was one of the most highly advanced in history. The Celts were the first people in Northern Europe to use and work with iron, and their art remains glorious. Theirs was a truly democratic and progressive society in which scholarship was held in the highest regard, sexuality was free and open, and women were fierce warriors. This absorbing, comprehensive guide brings to life one of history’s most progressive, vibrant societies and explores the Celts’ far-reaching impact on Western culture. Using a variety of authentic sources—ancient Celtic texts, folklore, legends, and literature from Ireland, Scotland, France, and Wales— The Wisdom of the Celts details the Celtic world from its expansion and decline to its modern revival, revealing a wealth of wisdom on all areas of life, including war, the Otherworld, King Arthur, nature, sexuality, freedom, spirituality, animals, the role of women, family, and beauty. A glorious and learned look at a remarkable civilization, this is a fascinating introduction to a people whose wisdom is more relevant today than ever.
