There was place left but for one more frame, when the acquaintance with Dr. Burney began at Streatham; and the charm of his conversation and manners, joined to his celebrity in letters, so quickly won upon the master as well as the mistress of the mansion, that he was presently selected for the honour of filling up this last chasm in the chain of Streatham worthies. To this flattering distinction, which Dr. Burney always recognized with pleasure, the public owe the engraving of Bartolozzi, which is prefixed to the History of Music. dr. johnson. The friendship and kindness of heart of Dr. Johnson, were promptly brought into play by this renewed intercourse. Richard, the youngest son of Dr. Burney, born of the second marriage, was then preparing for Winchester School, whither his father purposed conveying him in person. This design was no sooner known at Streatham, where Richard, at that time a beautiful as well as clever boy, was in vol. ii. o great favour with Mrs. Thrale, than Dr. Johnson volunteered an offer to accompany the father to Winchester; that he might himself present the son to Dr. Warton, the then celebrated master of that ancient receptacle for the study of youth. Dr. Burney, enchanted by such a mark of regard, gratefully accepted the proposal; and they set out together for Winchester, where Dr. Warton expected them with ardent hospitality. The acquaintance of Dr. Burney he had already sought with literary liberality, having kindly given him notice, through the medium of Mr. Garrick, '1 of a manuscript treatise on music in the Winchester collection. Book excerpt: Charles Burney (1726-1814) was one of the foremost music historians of the Enlightenment, a friend of David Garrick, correspondent of Diderot and Rousseau, a champion of Haydn, and a member of the Royal Society. The frequency with which he is still quoted by musicologists and historians attests to the continuing relevance and importance of his work. After completing his monumental General History of Music (1776-89), Burney began to write a projected twelve-volume autobiography, a taska he abandoned in 1805. When he died nearly a decade later, his daughter, the novelist Fanny Burney, edited the manuscript but destroyed much of it before publishing her own bowdlerized Memoirs of Dr. Burney in 1832. Not until the 1950s did fragments of the original memoirs, long believed lost, come to light. This edition reconstructs the fragments from Burney's first volume, free of Fanny Burney's interpolations and alterations. The resulting text is here published for the first time. The restored and uncensored Memoirs of Dr. Charles Burney covers his life from 1726 to 1769, illuminating his early career and the musical and theatrical life of London and the provinces in the mid-eighteenth century. The editors have skillfully bridged the fragments with material from other sources, including Burney's later letters. Their annotations, drawn in part from the articles on music that Burney wrote while he was working on his memoirs, reveal many new details about his world.

Book excerpt: Frances Burney (1752-1840), also known as Fanny Burney and later Madame d'Arblay, was an English satirical novelist, diarist and playwright. Her first novel, Evelina, was published anonymously in 1778 but once her identity as the author was discovered it brought her immediate fame as the work was widely admired for its unique narrative and comic strengths. Of her four novels it was her most successful and remains the best regarded. Her second novel was Cecilia, set in 1779 and published in 1782 with the subtitle Memoirs of an Heiress, which was also highly successful with over 50 editions. Her later novels were Camilla (1796), and The Wanderer (1814) which, like their predecessors, explore the lives of English aristocrats, satirising their social pretensions and personal foibles. Burney's wit and talent for caricature were widely acknowledged by the literary figures of her day including Samuel Johnson, Edmund Burke and David Garrick. In addition to her writing career, Burney served as 'Keeper of the Robes' to Queen Charlotte, the wife of George III, with whom she developed a warm relationship. In 1793 she married French emigre artillery officer, General Alexandre d'Arblay, with whom she had a son the following year. From 1797-1801 she wrote three plays, all comedies, that remained unpublished in her lifetime, and many volumes of her letters and journals, including those covering her time at court, have been published posthumously. After her husband's death Burney paid tribute to her father, Charles Burney (1726-1814), a music historian, composer and musician, by gathering his papers and publishing in 1832, in three volumes, her Memoirs of Doctor Burney. Written in a panegyric style, praising her father's accomplishments and character, she drew upon many of her own personal writings from many years earlier. In her bid to protect her father and the family's reputation she destroyed evidence of facts that were painful or unflatttering and was criticised by contemporaries, and later by historians, for doing so.
