Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of British Generals Distinguished During the Peninsular War, Vol. 1 of 2 Many differences of Opinion will probably be ex pressed as to the judgment displayed in the present selection. Some readers may say, why is this General preferred, and that General omitted? The answer is, that it was necessary, to make a limit, and that the Work is offered, not as comprising the whole, but as merely a small cohort from the distinguished band. It will be easy to add to the list if more should be required. Fourteen generals of repute are included in this list. One only of the number was what may be termed old Sir Thomas Graham - and be was only sixty when he fought and Won, with marvellous promptitude and audacity, the Battle of Barrosa. The rest were in the prime vigour of their days, with strength and activity of body which seconded the energy of the mind. Without this happy combina tion of mental and physical attributes, the duties of a general in the field will hang heavily on him who has to perform them. This book was released on 2011-11-23 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although biographies of Duke of Wellington abound, there few biographies of the generals that fought alongside him and executed his orders (or in some cases disobeyed them). The author John William Cole was well placed to provide the details of their lives being a long serving soldier in the British Army; his portraits are full of descriptive detail, without being too biased, he discusses the contentious issues as well as the victories they achieved. From the fiery, foul-mouthed Picton, respected but not loved by his men, to the quiet dignified “Daddy” Hill, who was adept at taking care of his own troops as well as surprising the French; the British generals were a diverse group worthy of individual attention that the author gave them. This volume chronicles the lives of No. VIII. — SIR THOMAS PICTON. No. IX. — LORD LYNEDOCH. No. IX. — EARL OF HOPETOUN. No. X. — LORD HILL. No. XII. — MAJOR-GENERAL LE MARCHANT. No. XII. — MAJOR-GENERAL ROSS. No. XIII. — SIR EDWARD PAKENHAM. Author – John William Cole (????-1870)

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of British Generals Distinguished During the Peninsular War, Vol. 2 of 2 Of Ciudad rodrigo, Badajos, and St. Sebastian, has animated the stormers Of Sebastopol. We have seen that want Of practice is not accompanied by any deficiency in noble daring. There is much in the career of Sir Thomas Picton for the young soldier to study with ad vantage. His rise was slow; he encountered many dif ficulties; he was the subject Of a violent persecution, which for a time cast a cloud upon his name and pros peets; by steady perseverance he surmounted Opposition. Book Memoirs Of The War In Spain From 1808 To 1814

Download or read book Memoirs Of The War In Spain From 1808 To 1814 written by Marshal Louis-Gabriel Suchet, Duc d'Albufera and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-25 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “If I had had two Marshals like Suchet I should not only have conquered Spain, but have kept it." This was the measured and just opinion of Marshal Suchet. Out of the graveyard for reputation that Spain became for the French generals, Marshal Suchet’s ability, aplomb and shrewdness gained him the unique distinction of being awarded his marshal’s dignity to his services in Spain. In his memoirs of the War in Spain, he recounts his experiences with honesty, balance and verve. His exciting battle narratives are interspersed with his expert appreciations of the situation as the Peninsular slipped from French grasp and the often acrimonious relations between the French commanders. With the fanatical resistance of the Spanish people, a lack of co-ordination, few supplies and growing British pressure, the achievement of Suchet under such circumstances is truly brilliant. A humble and moderate man, Suchet wrote his memoirs as he commanded in the field, with dash, brilliance, balance and poise. A fine addition to the library of anyone interested in the Peninsular War. Author —Marshal Suchet, Louis-Gabriel, Duc d'Albufera, 1770-1826 Translator — Anon. Text taken, whole and complete, from the edition published in London: H. Colburn, 1829. Original Page Count – 499 pages.

Book A History of the Peninsular War Vol 1 of 7

Download or read book A History of the Peninsular War Vol 1 of 7 written by Charles Oman and published by AT THE CLARENDON PRESS. This book was released on with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is many years since an attempt has been made in England to deal with the general history of the Peninsular War. Several interesting and valuable diaries or memoirs of officers who took part in the great struggle have been published of late, but no writer of the present generation has dared to grapple with the details of the whole of the seven years of campaigning that lie between the Dos Mayo and Toulouse. Napier’s splendid work has held the field for sixty years. Meanwhile an enormous bulk of valuable material has been accumulating in English, French, and Spanish, which has practically remained unutilized. Papers, public and private, are accessible whose existence was not suspected in the ’thirties; an infinite number of autobiographies and reminiscences which have seen the light after fifty or sixty years of repose in some forgotten drawer, have served to fill up many gaps in our knowledge. At least one formal history of the first importance, that of General Arteche y Moro, has been published. I fancy that its eleven volumes are practically unknown in England, yet it is almost as valuable as Toreño’s Guerra de la Independencia in enabling us to understand the purely Spanish side of the war. I trust therefore that it will not be considered presumptuous for one who has been working for some ten or fifteen years at the original sources to endeavour to summarize in print the results of his investigations; for I believe that even the reader who has already devoted a good deal of attention to the Peninsular War will find a considerable amount of new matter in these pages. My resolve to take in hand a general history of the struggle was largely influenced by the passing into the hands of All Souls College of the papers of one of its most distinguished fellows, the diplomatist Sir Charles Vaughan. Not only had Vaughan unique opportunities for observing the early years of the Peninsular War, but he turned them to the best account, and placed all his observations on record. I suppose that there was seldom a man who had a greater love for collecting and filing information. His papers contain not only his own diaries and correspondence, but an infinite number of notes made for him by Spanish friends on points which he desired to master, and a vast bulk of pamphlets, proclamations, newspapers, and tables of statistics, carefully bound together in bundles, which (as far as I can see) have not been opened between the day of his death and that on which they passed, by a legacy from his last surviving relative, into the possession of his old college. Vaughan landed at Corunna in September, 1808, in company with Charles Stuart, the first English emissary to the Central Junta. He rode with Stuart to Madrid and Aranjuez, noting everything that he saw, from Roman inscriptions to the views of local Alcaldes and priests on the politics of the day. He contrived to interview many persons of importance—for example, he heard from Cuesta’s own lips of his treasonable plot to overthrow the Junta, and he secured a long conversation with Castaños as to the Capitulation of Baylen, from which I have extracted some wholly new facts as to that event. He then went to Aragon, where he stayed three weeks in the company of the Captain-General Joseph Palafox. Not only did he cross-question Palafox as to all the details of his famous defence of Saragossa, but he induced San Genis (the colonel who conducted the engineering side of the operations) to write him a memorandum, twelve pages long, as to the character and system of his work. Vaughan accompanied Palafox to the front in November, but left the Army of Aragon a day before the battle of Tudela. Hearing of the disaster from the fugitives of Castaños’s army, he resolved to take the news to Madrid. To be continue in this ebook...
