Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of an American Prima Donna The name of Clara Louise Kellogg is known to the immediate generation chiefly as an echo of the past. Yet only thirty years ago it was written of her, enthusiastically but truthfully, that "no living singer needs a biography less than Miss Clara Louise Kellogg; and nowhere in the world would a biography of her be so superfluous as in America, where her name is a household word and her illustrious career is familiar in all its triumphant details to the whole people." The past to which she belongs is therefore recent; it is the past of yesterday only, thought of tenderly by our fathers and mothers, spoken of reverently as a poignant phase of their own ephemeral youth, one of their sweet lavender memories. The pity is (although this is itself part of the evanescent charm), that the singer's best creations can live but in the hearts of a people, and the fame of sound is as fugitive as life itself. A record of such creations is, however, possible and also enduring; while it is also necessary for a just estimate of the development of civilisations. As such, this record of her musical past - presented by Clara Louise Kellogg herself - will have a place in the annals of the evolution of musical art on the North American continent long after every vestige of fluttering personal reminiscence has vanished down the ages. A word of appreciation with regard to the preparation of this record is due to John Jay Whitehead, Jr., whose diligent chronological labours have materially assisted the editor. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Minor Chord: A Story of a Prima Donna In the zenith of my career as a prima donna, known in the foyers of every great city, the cynosure of the glow of the footlights, the plaudits of audiences in both hemispheres, the appreciative praise of great critics and the esteem and adoration of a host of admirers I am alone with my memories. Like the wife of Midas who, with her pretty Grecian mouth buried in the grass-roots, whispered the shameful secret Midas has asses' ears, I must tell the story; and so I have begun a long-debated purpose, the recital of a tale of the Middle West in the early seventies. My real life history has been too common place to appear romantic; my manager's version has over-gilded humble conditions which must never be revealed until my stage career is over. And so, in all my triumphs, though known everywhere, yet I am unknown, miserably unknown, except to those whom I have loved - and lost. Full well I know that, like the Grecian queen, my confidence may be betrayed, my secret escape me. Even as the very grasses and lowly wildflowers whispered to the zephyrs, and the zephyrs carried it to the clematis and laurels until the whole vale was susurrant and murmuring with the sibilant refrain, Midas has asses' ears, so any accident, the curiosity of a maid, yes, or the malignity of a rival, would make these avowals a reef on which to wreck my career, perhaps my reputation. Men of genius in all ages have sought to dissect and analyze the heart of woman and to lay bare its mysteries in song and fiction, painting and sculpture; but the greatest men who weigh the emotions and hearts of their fellow-creatures as in a balance fail in the study of the feminine heart to enter its holy of holies and to carry away with them the secret key of a woman's soul. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Famous Prima Donnas The musical stage in the United States may be said to be a birthright rather than a profession. A critical examination Of the con ditions quickly Shows one that the number of women at present prominent in light Opera and kindred forms Of entertainment, who have earned their positions by continued endeavor and logical development in their art, is com paratively small. The majority are, in fact, the happy victims of personality, who have been rushed into fame chiefly by chance and a fortunate combination of circumstances. They are without the requisite training, either in the art of singing or in the art of imperso nation, that would entitle them to be seriously considered as great vocalists or as great actors. Book From Paris to Peoria

  • Author : R. Allen Lott

  • Release : 2003-02-06

Download or read book From Paris to Peoria written by R. Allen Lott and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-02-06 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's difficult to imagine Franz Liszt performing in Peoria, but his contemporary and foremost rival, Sigismund Thalberg, did just that. During the mid-nineteenth century, Americans in more than a hundred cities--from Portland, Maine to Dubuque, Iowa to Mobile, Alabama--were treated to performances by some of Europe's most celebrated pianists. From Paris to Peoria deftly chronicles the visits of five of these pianists to the America of Mark Twain. Whether performing in small railroad towns throughout the Midwest or in gold-rush era California, these five charismatic pianists--Leopold de Meyer, Henri Herz, Sigismund Thalberg, Anton Rubinstein, and Hans von Bülow--introduced many Americans to the delights of the concert hall. With humor and insight, R. Allen Lott describes the glamour and the drudgery of the touring life, the transformation of American audiences from boisterous to reverent, and the establishment of the piano recital as a viable artistic and financial enterprise. Lott also explores the creative and sometimes outlandish publicity techniques of managers seeking to capitalize on prosperous but uncharted American markets. The result of extensive archival research, From Paris to Peoria is richly illustrated with concert programs, handbills, caricatures, and maps. A companion website, www.rallenlott.info, includes a comprehensive list of repertoires and itineraries, audio music examples, and transcriptions of selected primary sources. Certain to delight pianists, musicologists, and historians, From Paris to Peoria is an engaging, thoroughly researched, and often funny account of music and culture in nineteenth-century America.
