Book excerpt: There are three bestsellers of Galician literature: The Carpenter's Pencil by Manuel Rivas, a love story set in the Spanish Civil War; Winter Letters by Agustín Fernández Paz, about a man who decides to find out if a haunted house is really haunted (this title is also available from Small Stations Press); and perhaps most famously of all Memoirs of a Village Boy by Xosé Neira Vilas. This book, according to Wikipedia, is the most published work of Galician literature and has sold 700,000 copies in the Galician language. Now this work is being made available in an English translation by John Rutherford, founder of the Centre for Galician Studies at Oxford University and translator of Don Quixote and La Regenta for Penguin Classics. The book is a diary kept by Balbino, a village boy, 'in other words a nobody'. In the first chapter, he describes the village as 'a mixture of mud and smoke, where the dogs howl and the people die "when God sees fit"'. He would like to see the world, to go over seas and lands he doesn't know. He was born and brought up in the village, but now it feels small, cramped, as if he was living in a beehive. Behind the detailed description of village life, there is a fierce indictment of the iniquities of Galicia's feudal system, which is remarkable in a book first published in 1961, at the height of Franco's rule. Memoirs of a Village Boy paints a picture of the hardships and hard-won joys of life in a Galician village in the middle of the twentieth century, a life that was once common, but is now distant from our technology-dominated lives. It is a book to relish as one is transported by the richness of the language to another place and time.

Book Diary of A Village Boy

Download or read book Diary of A Village Boy written by Kevin James and published by Memoirs Publishing. This book was released on 2013-09-01 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kevin James was brought up in a humble home in rural Somerset in the 1950s, the son of a rabbit catcher and a farm labourer’s daughter. Despite poor health he soon learned how to fend for himself and make a bob or two by cutting the grass and doing odd jobs for wealthier neighbours. As he grew older he became something of a tearaway who had more than his fair share of scrapes in pubs and on motor bikes, but in later years he set up a successful metal fabrication company, making enough cash to buy a share in a winning racehorse. Kevin never forgot the difficult years he had grown through, years he remembers vividly for the music and the news that was current at the time. In this unusual autobiography he matches up the chapters of his life story and a string of anecdotes from the times with the news headlines and top ten hits of each of the key years of his life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: MEMOIRS OF A VILLAGE BOY is a life story, but not an entire autobiography. The main character Frederik Brocard talks about his childhood and his friends, and about the neighborhood where he grew up, the neighbors and other local residents. It is a story about everyday events, but also about love and loss, about joy and sadness, amorous encounters, and erotic escapades. It is about his social life then and now and the return to his native village after years of residence in France. He finds new neighbors and new friends and feels like the village boy of yesteryear again. It is a mixture of factual experiences with a nod to the truth, and events that originated entirely from the author's brain. What is autobiographical is a question to which the answer will remain shrouded in darkness. Fact and fantasy, always with a quip, are connected to each other. It is a story about a life as a life could have been.

Book A Long Way Gone

Download or read book A Long Way Gone written by Ishmael Beah and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2007-02-13 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My new friends have begun to suspect I haven’t told them the full story of my life. “Why did you leave Sierra Leone?” “Because there is a war.” “You mean, you saw people running around with guns and shooting each other?” “Yes, all the time.” “Cool.” I smile a little. “You should tell us about it sometime.” “Yes, sometime.” This is how wars are fought now: by children, hopped-up on drugs and wielding AK-47s. Children have become soldiers of choice. In the more than fifty conflicts going on worldwide, it is estimated that there are some 300,000 child soldiers. Ishmael Beah used to be one of them. What is war like through the eyes of a child soldier? How does one become a killer? How does one stop? Child soldiers have been profiled by journalists, and novelists have struggled to imagine their lives. But until now, there has not been a first-person account from someone who came through this hell and survived. In A Long Way Gone, Beah, now twenty-five years old, tells a riveting story: how at the age of twelve, he fled attacking rebels and wandered a land rendered unrecognizable by violence. By thirteen, he’d been picked up by the government army, and Beah, at heart a gentle boy, found that he was capable of truly terrible acts. This is a rare and mesmerizing account, told with real literary force and heartbreaking honesty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There was a point in my life's journey when it looked as though all hope had been lost, and there I stood, a small boy in a world that seemed cruel and merciless, surrounded by the ruins of my hopes and dreams. It was a period when I could not foresee the possibility of rising from the depths of hopelessness to the heights of inspiration. It was a time when my life resembled a bud struggling to sprout from the unlikeliest of rocks. Yet, here I stand, the author of "The Bud from the Rocks," a living testament to the resilience of the human spirit. This book is not just a story; it is a chronicle of my journey, from homelessness and despair to becoming an internationally acclaimed teacher, a published author, and a motivational speaker. It is a reminder that, in the face of adversity, one can rise, not despite the challenges but because of them. Within these pages, you will embark on a transformative voyage with me. You will witness the moments of heartbreak and despair, the trials that tested the very essence of my being. But more importantly, you will share in the triumphs, both big and small, that transformed me from a village boy who knew nothing of the world to an educator who imparts knowledge with love. You will witness the extraordinary power of faith, determination, and the unwavering support of those who believed in me. "The Bud from the Rocks" is a must-read for anyone who has faced adversity, for everyone who has contemplated giving up, or who believes that the obstacles before them are insurmountable. It is a reminder that, like a bud rising from the unlikeliest of rocks, limitations are mere figments of our imagination. It is a testament to the fact that, even in the darkest of times, God's divine grace is our beacon of hope. I invite you to turn the pages of "The Bud from the Rocks" and join me on this incredible journey. May you find solace, inspiration, and the unwavering belief that, with faith and resilience, even the unlikeliest of buds can sprout from the rocks. EDWIN OMARI MOKAYA-PROFESSOR

Book A Child From the Village

Download or read book A Child From the Village written by Sayyid Qutb and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Well known throughout the Islamic world as the foundational thinker for a significant portion of the contemporary Muslim intelligentsia, Sayyid Qutb (1906–1966) was a member of the Muslim Brotherhood and was jailed by Gamal Abdul Nasser’s government in 1954. He became one of the most uncompromising voices of the movement we now call Islamism and is perhaps best known for his book, Ma`lam fi al-tariq. A Child from the Village was written just prior to Qutb’s conversion to the Islamist cause and reflects his concerns for social justice. Interst in Qutb’s writing has increased in the West since Islamism has emerged as a power on the world scene. In this memoir, Qutb recalls his childhood in the village of Musha in Upper Egypt. He chronicles the period between 1912 and 1918, a time immensely influential in the creation of modern Egypt. Written with much tenderness toward childhood memories, it has become a classic in modern Arabic autobiography. Qutb offers a clear picture of Egyptian village life in the early twentieth century, its customs and lore, educational system, religious festivals, relations with the central government, and the struggle to modernize and retain its identity. Translators John Calvert and William Shepard capture the beauty and intensity of Qutb’s prose.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten years ago one of America's most important public figures, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, chronicled her quest both deeply personal and, in the truest sense, public to help make our society into the kind of village that enables children to become able, caring resilient adults. IT TAKES A VILLAGE is a textbook for caring, filled with truths that are worth a read, and a reread. In her substantial new introduction, Senator Clinton reflects on how our village has changed over the last decade, from the internet to education, and on how her own understanding of children has deepened as she has watched Chelsea grow up and take on challenges new to her generation, from a first job to living through a terrorist attack. She discusses how the work she is doing in the Senate is helping children and looks at where America has been successful, improvements in the foster care system and support for adoption, and where there is still work to be done, providing pre-school programmes and universal health care to all our children. This new edition elucidates how the choices we make about how we raise our children, and how we support families, will determine how all nations will face the challenges of this century.

Book Kafka Was the Rage

Download or read book Kafka Was the Rage written by Anatole Broyard and published by Vintage. This book was released on 1997-06-24 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Hemingway's A Moveable Feast did for Paris in the 1920s, this charming yet undeceivable memoir does for Greenwich Village in the late 1940s. In 1946, Anatole Broyard was a dapper, earnest, fledgling avant-gardist, intoxicated by books, sex, and the neighborhood that offered both in such abundance. Stylish written, mercurially witty, imbued with insights that are both affectionate and astringent, this memoir offers an indelible portrait of a lost bohemia. We see Broyard setting up his used bookstore on Cornelia Street—indulging in a dream that was for him as romantic as “living off the land or sailing around the world” while exercizing his libido with a protegee of Anais Nin and taking courses at the New School, where he deliberates on “the new trends in art, sex, and psychosis.” Along the way he encounters Delmore Schwartz, Caitlin and Dylan Thomas, William Gaddis, and other writers at the start of their careers. Written with insight and mercurial wit, Kafka Was the Rage elegantly captures a moment and place and pays homage to a lost bohemia as it was experienced by a young writer eager to find not only his voice but also his place in a very special part of the world.

Book Lost Property

Download or read book Lost Property written by Ben Sonnenberg and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2020-06-16 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A smart and hilarious memoir of privilege and excess told by the son of a powerful, seductive member of the New York elite. Ben Sonnenberg grew up in the great house on Gramercy Park in New York City that his father, the inventor of modern public relations and the owner of a fine collection of art, built to celebrate his rise from the poverty of the Jewish Lower East Side to a life of riches and power. His son could have what he wanted, except perhaps what he wanted most: to get away. Lost Property, a book of memoirs and confessions, is a tale of youthful riot and rebellion. Sonnenberg recounts his aesthetic, sexual, and political education, and a sometimes absurd flight into “anarchy and sabotage,” in which he reports to both the CIA and East German intelligence during the Cold War and, cultivating a dandy’s nonchalance, pursues a life of sexual adventure in 1960s London and New York. The cast of characters includes Orson Welles, Glenn Gould, and Sylvia Plath; among the subjects are marriage, children, infidelity, debt, divorce, literature, and multiple sclerosis. The end is surprisingly happy.
