Book excerpt: Field Marshal Stapleton Cotton, 1st Viscount Combermere GCB GCH KSI PC (14 November 1773 - 21 February 1865), was a British Army officer, diplomat and politician. As a junior officer he took part in the Flanders Campaign, in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War and in the suppression of Robert Emmet’s insurrection in 1803. He commanded a cavalry brigade in Sir Arthur Wellesley’s Army before being given overall command of the cavalry in the latter stages of the Peninsular War. He went on to be Commander-in-Chief, Ireland and then Commander-in-Chief, India. In the latter role he stormed Bharatpur—a fort which previously had been deemed impregnable. This book, which was published in two volumes, represents Viscount Combermere’s memoirs in the form of a vast collection of his private papers, as collated by his third wife, Mary, Viscountess Combermere. They serve to provide an invaluable and comprehensive view of the public and private life of one of England’s most distinguished soldiers.

This book was released on 2016-06-19 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Correspondence of Field Marshal Sir John Burgoyne, Bart, Vol. 2 of 2 The first letter of Sir James Graham which follows refers to this communication; it will be seen from the correspondence of this period, that the power of Russia for offensive operations was very much overrated by those best informed in the matter. From Sir James Graham to Lord Raglan. "Admiralty, 12th January, 1854. "My dear Lord Raglan, "So far from stepping beyond your duty in allowing me to read the enclosed able report, you appear to me to have executed your duty - as you always do - in an exemplary manner. It would be most unfair that the British Admiral should not have the advantage of the opinion of one of our most distinguished scientific officers, so far as imperfect information has allowed him the means of forming a judgment. "I would suggest that Colonel Vicars should take with him a copy of Sir John Burgoyne's report, and that he should have permission to show it confidentially to Admiral Dundas. "I hope that you will concur in this suggestion. If you do, no time should be lost in sending a copy to Colonel Vicars, for he leaves London to-morrow morning, and will embark at Portsmouth in the afternoon. "I wish, also, that you would have the kindness to send me another copy of this same report for my own use. "It may be very desirable that the Cabinet should see and well consider it. "I am, &c., "J. R. G. Graham." "Admiralty, 18th January, 1854. "My dear Sir John, "You cannot offer us too much advice or too many suggestions: coming from you they are highly valued by me. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs and Correspondence of Major-General Sir William Nott, G. C. B, Vol. 1 of 2: Commander of the Army of Candahar, and Envoy at the Court of the King of Oude Two or three years after the death of Sir William Nott there appeared in the 'quarterly Review a notice of the General's career in Afi'ghanistan, illustrated by a few quotations from his private correspondence, to which the writer of the article had had access. In the course of that article the reviewer expressed his hope that the whole of the letters of the General would, at some subsequent period, be given to the public, for that they were worthy of the distinguished writer, and served to illustrate a very interesting part of the memorable campaigns in Afi'ghanistan. For some time the daughters of Sir William Nott, the depositaries of his most secret thoughts and confidence, hesitated to give to the world what might, in a measure, wound the feelings or compromise the characters of some of the public functionaries of the time. This book was released on 2016-09-14 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from From Midshipman to Field Marshal, Vol. 2 of 2 Nor was the administration more creditable to our Military rulers. In order to economise passage money, no non-com missioned officer or soldier with less than eighteen months to complete twenty-one years, was allowed to embark, while all the recruits were sent out. Thus the Sergeants and old soldiers left at Home had nothing to do, while the officers had insufficient non-commissioned officers to help in training the recruits. Incomplete and unsatisfactory, however, as were the Regimental arrangements, they were virtually all that existed in South Africa, the Departments being represented by very few officers and thus no sooner was I ordered to march, than I received a requisition for 5 non-commissioned officers, and selected men to form a Hospital, and 5 to form a Commissariat department. In the result this left but 7 duty Sergeants with the 5 companies of rather more than 500 men. The difficulties of crossing the numerous rivers in the journey of 500 miles exercised our patience. When the team of 16 or 18 oxen failed to pull the waggon and its load out of a river, another team of similar strength was hooked in, often with the result that one of the wheels was wrenched off by a boulder of rock which stopped the progress of the vehicle. This procedure was suitable, moreover, only when the pull out was fairly straight; if, as frequently happened, the gravel forming the ford was deposited on a curved line, every waggon had to be hauled out by one team assisted by manual labour.
