Book Mellifont Abbey Co Louth Its Ruins and Associations

Download or read book Mellifont Abbey Co Louth Its Ruins and Associations written by and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mellifont Abbey, Co, Louth, Its Ruins and Associations: A Guide and Popular History Annex Introduction. In the following pages an attempt is made to describe the ruins of Mellifont as they now appear, and to explain the uses, or probable uses, that the buildings yet remaining must have served when the monks dwelt there. Obviously, some important structural alterations were made when changing the venerable Abbey into a fortified residence; nevertheless the ruins exhibit, on the whole, the characteristics of the primitive plan and style in which Mellifont, as well as all the Cistercian monasteries both in this country and on the Continent, were built. The explanation is founded on reliable authority, being gleaned from most authentic sources, such as, Les Monuments Primitifs de La Regie Cistercienne, which is a copy of the Rule drawn up by the Founders of the Order; the Monasticon Cisterciense; Violet Le Due; Juhainville, Etudes sur VEtat interieur des Abbayes Cisterciennes au XII. et au XIII. siecle; Meglinger, Iter Cisterciense; La Vie de Saint Bernard, by Vacandard, etc. As no Records, or Chronicles of Mellifont now exist, the historical part of the compilation has been derived from different sources, chiefly from our old Annals The Annals of the Four Masters; those of Boyle, of St. Marys Abbey, Dublin; Clyn and Douiing s;and of Clonmacnois; Wares Bishops, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Women and Monastic Reform in the Medieval West C 1000 1500

Download or read book Women and Monastic Reform in the Medieval West C 1000 1500 written by Julie Hotchin and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2023-04-04 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New approaches to understanding religious women's involvement in monastic reform, demonstrating how women's experiences were more ambiguous and multi-layered than previously assumed. Over the last two decades, scholarship has presented a more nuanced view of women's attitude to and agency in medieval monastic reform, challenging the idea that they were, by and large, unwilling to accept or were necessarily hostile towards reform initiatives. Rather, it has shown that they actively participated in debates about the ideas and structures that shaped their religious lives, whether rejecting, embracing, or adapting to calls for "reform" contingent on their circumstances. Nevertheless, fundamental questions regarding the gendered nature of religious reform are ripe for further examination. This book brings together innovative research from a range of disciplines to re-evaluate and enlarge our knowledge of women's involvement in spiritual and institutional change in female monastic communities over the period c. 1000 - c. 1500. Contributors revise conventional narratives about women and monastic reform, and earlier assumptions of reform as negative or irrelevant for women. Drawing on a diverse array of visual, material and textual sources, it presents "snapshots" of reform from western Europe, stretching from Ireland to Iberia. Case-studies focussing on a number of different topics, from tenth-century female saints' lives to fifteenth-century liturgical books, from the tenth-century Leominster prayerbook to archaeological remains in Ireland, from embroideries and tapestries to the rebellious nuns of Sainte-Croix in Poitiers, offer a critical reappraisal of how monastic women (and their male associates) reflected, individually and collectively, on their spiritual ideals and institutional forms.

Book excerpt: This book investigates the impact of the dissolution of the monasteries on women religious and examines their survival in the following decades, showing how, despite the state's official proscription of vocation living, religious vocation options for women continued in less formal ways. Further, this book discusses the revival of religious establishments for women in Ireland from 1629 and outlines the links between these new convents and the Irish foundations abroad.
