Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mycologists now look at the genes of fungi to decipher many features that they have been studying in the past beyond just looking at the morphology and other such traits of these organisms. Fungi are also attracting the attention of scientists in various other disciplines. These include the search for useful fungi in various extreme environments th

Book Bread making quality of wheat

Download or read book Bread making quality of wheat written by Bob Belderok and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wheat has a long history of serving as an important food crop to mankind. Especially in the Northern Hemisphere, it has been appreciated as a major source of energy through its carbohydrates, and in more recent times for its supply of valuable proteins. This combination of carbohydrates and proteins gives wheat its unique properties for making breads of different kinds of tastes. During the course of history, the quality of wheat has improved stead ily, undoubtedly for a long time by accident, and for reasons little under stood. Over the last 150 years our knowledge has increased on farming and crop husbandry, on bringing about improvements through goal-oriented plant breeding, and on milling and baking technology, leading to the standards that we enjoy today. This process will certainly continue as our knowledge of the genetic reservoir of wheat species increases. The European Cereal Atlas Foundation (ECAF) maintains the aim of in creasing and disseminating knowledge about cereal crops. Within that scope ECAF has decided to publish a book on the history of bread wheat in Europe, the development of associated bread-making technology, and the breeding of bread wheats during the twentieth century. As ECAF is a Dutch foundation, its Board is particularly pleased to have found three Dutch scientists willing to contribute to this volume. Two of them have served wheat science in the Netherlands for their entire scientific careers, spanning a period starting around 1955 and lasting for several decades of very productive wheat science development.

Book Bibliographic Guide to Refrigeration 1965 1968

Download or read book Bibliographic Guide to Refrigeration 1965 1968 written by Sam Stuart and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 649 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bibliographic Guide to Refrigeration 1965-1968 is a bibliographic guide to all the documents abstracted in the International Institute of Refrigeration Bulletin during the period 1965-1968. The references include nearly 7,000 reports, articles, and communications, classified according to subjects, and followed by a listing of books. This book is divided into 10 parts and begins with a listing of references on thermodynamics, heat transfer, and other basic physical phenomena relating to refrigeration, including desiccation and measurements of temperature, humidity, and pressure. The next sections are devoted to the physics of low temperatures and cryogenics; production and distribution of cold; refrigerating plants (mainly in the food domain); and refrigerated transport and packaging. Other references deal with air conditioning and heat pumps; and industrial, biological, medical, and agricultural applications of refrigeration. The final section focuses on standards and regulations, economics and statistics, and education and trade activities in the refrigeration industry. This guide is intended to assist researchers, engineers, manufacturers, and operators who are in either constant or occasional contact with the refrigeration domain.

Book Onions and Other Vegetable Alliums

Download or read book Onions and Other Vegetable Alliums written by James L. Brewster and published by CABI. This book was released on 2008 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fully revised, expanded and updated edition of the successful text, Onions and Other Vegetable Alliums, relates the production and utilization of these familiar and important vegetable crops to the many aspects of plant science underpinning their production and storage technologies. Chapters cover species and crop types, plant structure, genetics and breeding, physiology of growth and development as well as pests and diseases, production agronomy, storage after harvest and the biochemistry of flavour, storage carbohydrates and colour and how this relates to nutritional and health benefits. From this wide perspective it is possible to see many examples where underlying scientific knowledge illuminates, explains and can improve agronomic practice. The reader will get an insight into how molecular methods are revolutionizing the study of taxonomy, genetics, pathology and physiology and how these methods are being applied in the breeding of improved crops.

Download or read book The Chemical Scythe written by Alastair Hay and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chemical Scythe is the first book in a projected series to be published by Plenum Press in association with the International Disaster Institute. The aim of the series, Disaster Research in Practice, is to provide scientific and readable accounts on the most urgent areas of disaster research. It is fitting, therefore, that Dr. Hay's investigation into the nature and effects of dioxins heralds the new series. The problem of chemical hazards is one that we will have to learn to live with in future decades. Dr. Hay's book is an authoritative account of the chemistry and proven and potential effects of dioxins, and of the impli cations for safety planning. He concludes with a cautious, yet optimistic note-that indeed we can learn to live with such hazards, providing that we are prepared to understand and plan for the unexpected. The accident at Seveso in 1976 alerted the world to an imperfectly un derstood but immensely alarming environmental hazard. Public debate and argument as to the implications of dioxins and, indeed, the use of herbicides as aggressive weapons in Vietnam, rage on. And yet it is only through the painstaking research exemplified in this book that it will eventually be pos sible to promote the vital accountability on the part of industrialists and governments.
