Book Biological Control of Weeds in Australia

Download or read book Biological Control of Weeds in Australia written by M. H. Julien and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2012 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological control of weeds has been practiced for over 100 years and Australia has been a leader in this weed management technique. The classical example of control of prickly pears in Australia by the cactus moth Cactoblastis cactorum, which was imported from the Americas, helped to set the future for biocontrol of weeds in many countries. Since then there have been many projects using Classical Biological Control to manage numerous weed species, many of which have been successful. Importantly, there have been no serious negative non-target impacts - the technique, when practiced as it is in Australia, is safe and environmentally friendly. Economic assessments have shown that biocontrol of weeds in Australia has provided exceedingly high benefit-to-cost ratios. This book reviews biological control of weeds in Australia to 2011, covering over 90 weed species and a multitude of biological control agents and potential agents. Each chapter has been written by practicing biological control of weeds researchers and provides details of the weed, the history of its biological control, exploration for agents, potential agents studied and agents released and the outcomes of those releases. Many weeds were successfully controlled, some were not, many projects are still underway, some have just begun, however all are reported in detail in this book. Biological Control of Weeds in Australiawill provide invaluable information for biological control researchers in Australia and elsewhere. Agents used in Australia could be of immense value to other countries that suffer from the same weeds as Australia. The studies reported here provide direction to future research and provide examples and knowledge for researchers and students. KEY FEATURES * A unique collation of information for Australian weed research and management * Contains all the information about biological control of weeds in Australia in one book * Provides key references for further information * Will become a well cited publication

Book Evaluation of Mechanical and Chemical Methods for Control of Melaleuca Quinquenervia in Southern Florida Wetlands Research Programs

Download or read book Evaluation of Mechanical and Chemical Methods for Control of Melaleuca Quinquenervia in Southern Florida Wetlands Research Programs written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Melaleuca quinquenervia (Cav.) Blake, common names melaleuca, cajeput, or punk tree, is native to the Australian region. Trees were first planted in Southern Florida early in the 20th century. Starting in the late 1940s, melaleuca was planted by U.S. Army Engineer personnel at Lake Okeechobee, Florida, to serve as wind barriers and to provide protection for the levees surrounding the lake. The trees have now spread to wetland habitats and were found by a 1979 survey to grow along 88.5 km (53.1 miles) of the 175km (105 miles) of levee road and to cover approximately 96.8 ha (242 acres) in these perimeter stands (Stocker l982a). Additionally, Stocker found that 'in the lake proper, melaleuca is found in approximately 420 ha (1,050 acres), where it offers as isolated individuals and as dense colonies (heads) up to 0.6 ha (1.5 acres) in size.' This distribution of trees was approximately 0.3 percent of the lake acreage.

Book Aromatica Volume 1

Download or read book Aromatica Volume 1 written by Peter Holmes and published by Singing Dragon. This book was released on 2016-02-21 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first of two volumes, this is a comprehensive clinical text on the principles behind the clinical use of essential oils. It builds an important foundation for essential oil therapy and includes profiles of the most important 30 essential oils used in practice. This detailed and practical database of clinical experience of essential oil therapeutics takes a truly holistic approach, focussing on the psychological, the physiological and the energetic or Chinese medical aspects. Skilfully blending the evidence of scientific research with that of clinical practice, the book builds a comprehensive therapeutic profile for each oil it presents to the reader. Based on the different administration methods used and the absorption pathways activated, it clearly differentiates the psychological, physiological and topical uses of these essential oils. An extensive Materia Medica section is included. Reliable clinical reference material is offered for all complementary therapists, including aromatherapists, medical herbalists, Chinese Medicine practitioners, energy medicine therapists and massage therapists.

Book Vegetation of Australian Riverine Landscapes

Download or read book Vegetation of Australian Riverine Landscapes written by Samantha Capon and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vegetation communities in Australia's riverine landscapes are ecologically, economically and culturally significant. They are also among the most threatened ecosystems on the continent and have been dramatically altered as a result of human activities and climate change. Vegetation of Australian Riverine Landscapes brings together, for the first time, the results of the substantial amount of research that has been conducted over the last few decades into the biology, ecology and management of these important plant communities in Australia. The book is divided into four sections. The first section provides context with respect to the spatial and temporal dimensions of riverine landscapes in Australia. The second section examines key groups of riverine plants, while the third section provides an overview of riverine vegetation in five major regions of Australia, including patterns, significant threats and management. The final section explores critical issues associated with the conservation and management of riverine plants and vegetation, including water management, salinity, fire and restoration. Vegetation of Australian Riverine Landscapes highlights the incredible diversity and dynamic nature of riverine vegetation across Australia, and will be an excellent reference for researchers, academics and environmental consultants.
