Download or read book World Resources 2000 2001 written by C. Rosen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-11-29 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World Resources 2000-2001, People and Ecosystems: The Fraying Web of Life focuses on the critical link between ecosystems and people and provides an overview of current global environmental and economic trends using hundreds of indicators in more than 150 countries. Until now there has not been a comprehensive, formalised process to assess human damage to our ecosystems, to establish a baseline for future actions, or to disseminate information that would aid the formulation of better policies world-wide. This book is the first reliable, comprehensive base of evidence for taking stock and taking care of the world's diverse ecosystems. • deals with the critical issues that focus on the link between ecosystems and people • highlights the goods and services that ecosystems provide and illustrates the benefits of a better understanding and better management of the planet's natural wealth • reports on pilot studies by leading scientists and international institutions assessing the state of the world's ecosystems - forests, croplands, grasslands, freshwater systems and coastal areas • increases the understanding of human dependence on nature • raises awareness of environmental threats • provides examples of wise stewardship from all corners of the globe • focuses on four main issues: population and human well-being, food and water security, consumption, energy and wastes, trace emissions since the Kyoto protocol • gives data tables for more than 150 countriesIt demonstrates the power of information and new digital technologies to transform the way we interact with our environment and is particularly important for environmentalists, scientists, professionals, journalists, policy-makers and students. This special Millennium Edition of the World Resources Institute's biennial report published by Elsevier Science in September 2000 in partnership with the World Resources Institute, the UN Environment Program, the UN Development Programme and the World Bank. Download or read book The Mekong Delta System written by Fabrice G. Renaud and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-06-01 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book about the Mekong Delta presents a unique collection of state-of-the-art contributions by international experts from different scientific disciplines about the characteristics and pressing water-related challenges of the Mekong Delta in Vietnam. The Mekong Delta belongs to one of the areas, which are to expect the largest challenges concerning environmental change and climate change induced sea level rise . The Delta acts as the “rice bowl” of Southeast Asia and is home to over 17 Million people, who need to cope with ecologic as well as socio-economic changes linked to the rapid economic development of the country. Annual floods, severe droughts, salt water intrusion, degrading water quality, tropical cyclones, hydrologic changes due to hydropower projects in the upstream of the Mekong, coastal erosion, and the loss of biodiversity are some of the problems in the region. Heterogeneous resource management responsibilities, and the fact that the Mekong – and thus also the Delta – is influenced by six countries aggravate the situation. Integrated water resources management and fostered cooperation and information exchange are pressing needs for the sustainable development of the Delta.

Book The Physical Geography of Southeast Asia

Download or read book The Physical Geography of Southeast Asia written by Avijit Gupta and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2005-02-24 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Physical Geography of Southeast Asia examines the complex mosaic of physical environments which comprise Southeast Asia, and the current environmental problems and management practices which have arisen in this part of the world. The book is in three sections. The first section introduces the basic environmental components (geology, landforms, rivers, vegetation, and others) across the entire region. The second section discusses specific environments that are characteristic of this assemblage of continental and maritime landscapes (volcanic islands, coastal environment, granitic terrains, karst, etc.). The third and final section illustrates the ecological relationship between the environment and people (volcanic hazards, urban environment, coastal zone development, coral reefs, and others). The physical environment of Southeast Asia is examined at different levels, covering a world region that ranges from ancient, stable landmasses to dynamic, unstable plate boundaries, from aged, primary rainforests to brash, vibrant, resource-demanding built environments. Southeast Asia has been perceived as a laboratory for studying plate tectonics. It is an assemblage of large river basins, peninsulas and archipelagos, and seas surrounded by islands. It is an area of great physical variations where parts of the physical environment have been significantly degraded anthropogenically, following rapid population growth and development. In large parts of the region, the forms and processes on land and offshore should no longer be seen as entirely natural. As this book repeatedly illustrates, plate tectonics and people are both important contributors to the physical geography of Southeast Asia. The contributors to this volume are distinguished, scholarly, and have a long association with Southeast Asia. The chapters are not only skilfully built on state-of-the-art research findings but also include new material from the on-going research activities of the authors. The book goes beyond being the first comprehensive and detailed volume of the biophysical geography of Southeast Asia in that it also deals with the tropical environment and the relationship between environment and people in a rapidly developing world region.

Book Riversymposium 2001

Download or read book Riversymposium 2001 written by P. Greenfield and published by IWA Publishing (International Water Assoc). This book was released on 2002 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brisbane?s annual Riversymposium plays a unique role, providing an exchange and synthesis of river management knowledge and practice. In presenting a holistic, integrated approach to the subject it aims to showcase the world's best practice in river management and so act as a forum for learning and exchange of ideas for river managers, to celebrate achievements in river management, giving full value to social and ecological aspects of rivers, and to increase public attention to issues of river management. In keeping with its goal of addressing all aspects of river management, the 2001 Riversymposium featured several key topics and river management case studies. From the wide-ranging and lively programme 31 articles have been selected for these proceedings. Following the keynote address there are sections covering: Human Impacts on River Health; Rivers as Urban Landscapes - the Renaissance of the Waterfront; The Economics of River Management; Sustainable River Management; Community Involvement in River Management; Environmental Flows. With contributions from around the world, the Riversymposium proceedings present a holistic view of river management, offering scientists, politicians, practitioners, industry and community groups a key resource on current issues relating to the management of rivers.
