Book Fort Meigs Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fort Meigs 3d. Fallen timbers. August 16, 1794, Gen. Wayne, leaving a suflicient force at Ft. Defiance, moved down the left bank of the river on the 18th a small fortification for the deposit of military stores was erected at Roch de Boeuf, a mile above the present village of Waterville, and named Ft. Deposit. Five miles below this point, on the morning of the 20th, Gen. Wayne's troops encountered the allied Indian forces commanded by the young and intrepid chief, Turkey Foot; the conflict, short, sharp and decisive, terminated in the overwhelming defeat of the Indians. It is known as the Battle of Fallen Timbers, and was one of the most important in its results that had ever been fought with the Indian tribes, for it ended in a final treaty of peace at Greenville, and concluded the persecutions of the pioneer settlers. This was chosen by Turkey Foot as his battle ground, because a hurricane had windrowed the forest trees, making an almost insurmountable obstruction to Wayne's mounted troops and a natural fortification for the Indians. Wayne, however, came upon them like the winds that had laid low the giants of the forest, his soldiers partaking of his own irresistible courage and fighting qualities; Mad Anthony, by reason of this, was afterward known among the various Indian tribes as Che-no-tin - translated, the Whirlwind. Near the base of Presque Isle Hill (an abrupt and narrow point of land, which extends like a promontorv toward the river, and which was also a portion of the battle ground) and a few yards distant from the water, is an immense bowlder, afterward carved by the Indians with representations of turkeys' feet, in memory of their beloved Chieftain who fell there during the conflict. Thus we are indebted to the savages for the only monument to mark the many historic spots in the valley. Lieut. Harrison (afterward commander-in-chief of the Northwestern army) was an aid-de camp to Gen. Wayne in this campaign. Book Never a Dull Moment

Download or read book Never a Dull Moment written by Mark S. Fuller and published by Sunstone Press. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extraordinary people lead extraordinary lives and, from the beginning, even before he had any control over his life, John Meigs’ life was extraordinary: kidnapped by his father, never to see his mother again. Once on his own, he tried his hand as a reporter in Los Angeles in 1936, and then in Honolulu, where he got drawn into the art world, becoming one of the original designers of the Hawaiian aloha shirts. Those pursuits were interrupted with the onset of World War II and John’s enlistment in the Navy. After a serendipitous escape of death and military duty in Florida, John returned to Hawaii, where he met New Mexico artist Peter Hurd. That encounter led John to New Mexico and to interactions with a wide variety of notable people, including painters Andrew Wyeth and Georgia O’Keeffe, poet Witter Bynner, oilman and cattleman Robert O. Anderson, and actor Vincent Price. With the notable artist Rolf Armstrong, of “pin-up girl” calendar fame, John traveled to Paris in 1952 where his off-beat nature led him to Alice B. Toklas. After returning to New Mexico, numerous opportunities knocked on John’s door, beckoning him in different directions all at the same time. In 1979, his travels led to a particularly significant development in John’s life when he picked up a hitchhiker, who became a complicated fixture in his life as both a sidekick and a love object. Meig’s fascinating life continued to unfold, garnering attention and impacting those close to him. As can happen, though, even with the most accomplished and creative, eventually, a sad, slow mental decline set in.

Book The Quartermaster

Download or read book The Quartermaster written by Robert O'Harrow and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Born to a well to do, connected family in 1816, Montgomery C. Meigs graduated from West Point as an engineer. He helped build America's forts and served under Lt. Robert E. Lee to make navigation improvements on the Mississippi River. As a young man, he designed the Washington aqueducts in a city where people were dying from contaminated water. He built the spectacular wings and the massive dome of the brand new US Capitol. Introduced to President Lincoln by Secretary of State William Seward, Meigs became Lincoln's Quartermaster. It was during the Civil War that Meigs became a national hero. He commanded Ulysses S. Grant's base of supplies that made Union victories, including Gettysburg, possible. He sustained Sherman's army in Georgia, and the March to the Sea. After the war, Meigs built Arlington Cemetery (on land that had been Robert E. Lee's home). [The author] brings Meigs alive in [this book]. We get to know this major military figure that Lincoln and his Cabinet and Generals called the key to victory and learn how he fed, clothed, and armed the Union Army using his ingenuity and devotion"--Amazon.com.
