Book Meeting the energy challenge

Download or read book Meeting the energy challenge written by Great Britain: Department of Trade and Industry and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2007-05-23 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two main energy challenges: tackling climate change by reducing carbon dioxide emissions; and ensuring clean and affordable energy as the country becomes increasingly dependent on imported fuel. These challenges have to be met against the backdrop of rising fossil fuel prices; slower than anticipated liberalisation of the EU energy markets; heightened awareness of the risk arising from remaining oil and gas reserves being concentrated in a few geographical regions; and a need for substantial new investment in power stations, the electricity grid and gas infrastructure. This White Paper sets out the Governments international and domestic strategy to address these challenges and ways to implement the Energy Review of 2006 and the 2006 Pre-Budget Report. There is a separate consultation document on nuclear power.

Book Meeting Globalization s Challenges

Download or read book Meeting Globalization s Challenges written by Luís Catão and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-05 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leading economists propose solutions to the problems of globalization Globalization has expanded economic opportunities throughout the world, but it has also left many people feeling dispossessed, disenfranchised, and angry. Luís Catão and Maurice Obstfeld bring together some of today's top economists to assess the benefits, costs, and daunting policy challenges of globalization. This timely and accessible book combines incisive analyses of the anatomy of globalization with innovative and practical policy ideas that can help to make it work better for everyone. Meeting Globalization's Challenges draws on new research to examine the channels through which international trade and the diffusion of technology have enhanced the wealth of nations while also producing unequal benefits within and across countries. The book provides needed perspectives on the complex interplay of trade, deindustrialization, inequality, and the troubling surge of nationalism and populism—perspectives that are essential for crafting sound economic policies. It tackles the vexing issue of how to most effectively compensate globalization's losers and reintegrate them into job markets. The book also explores how to design social insurance policies that can mitigate the risks posed by automation and offshoring, such as mass unemployment and its inherent dangers to democracy. With a foreword by International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde and a history-rich synthesis by Catão and Obstfeld of main policy takeaways, Meeting Globalization's Challenges features contributions by Ufuk Akcigit, Edward Alden, François Bourguignon, Angus Deaton, Rafael Dix-Carneiro, Jeffry Frieden, Gordon H. Hanson, Keyu Jin, Lori G. Kletzer, Anne Krueger, Paul Krugman, Nina Pavcnik, Andrés Rodríguez-Clare, Dani Rodrik, Michael Trebilcock, Laura D. Tyson, Martin Wolf, and Ernesto Zedillo.

Book Progress Towards the Knowledge Driven Economy

Download or read book Progress Towards the Knowledge Driven Economy written by Great Britain. Parliament. House of Commons. Trade and Industry Committee and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2005-03-22 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1998 White Paper 'Our competitive future: building the knowledge based economy' (CM 4176 ISBN 0101417624) proposed a ten year programme to enable the UK to close the productivity gap by exploiting the potential benefits of a modern knowledge driven economy. More than six years on, this report is a review of the progress that has been made. The topics covered include: UK performance since 1998; the development of new products, processes and services; science and knowledge research bases; knowledge transfer and exploitation; information and communication technologies, competition from low-cost economies. One of the conclusions is that although the UK's science and knowledge research bases and businesses are collaborating more frequently, the performance in knowledge exploitation has been disappointing and the relative position of the UK against the rest of the G7 has remained unchanged. Another conclusion is that although there is some evidence that outsourcing abroad can be beneficial, the Government should keep the trend under review in case there are strategic loses.

Book Asia Pacific in the New World Order

Download or read book Asia Pacific in the New World Order written by Christopher Brook and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asia-Pacific in the New World Order critically explores the notion that a distinctive regional power bloc is developing linking countries bordering the Pacific, with East Asia at its core. This student-friendly volume sheds light on the complex interplay between global, regional and national forces which have transformed the Asia-Pacific area into one of the most vibrant and economically successful regions in the world. Historical narratives alongside geopolitical and geoeconomic perspectives are deployed to examine the shifting pattern of power relations and security structures across the region, set within a wider world context. Key issues addressed include: * what are the primary security problems of the region and how are they being resolved? * does the dynamic growth of the region, and particularly the rise of China, pose a challenge to existing structures of world order? The text has a strong interdisciplinary flavour drawing on analytical approaches from the international relations, political economy and political geography literature. Authors have been drawn from the Asia-Pacific region and the UK and all are established scholars in their specialist fields.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rainbow Nation benefits from an internationally competitive private sector, which accounts for roughly 70% of GDP, and extremely competitive infrastructure; its utility sector, for example, produces just under half of the total power generated on the African continent. South Africa represents by far the most developed market in Africa, but there are still some structural challenges it is grappling with. Government strategies have set a target of increasing labour market participation from 54% in 2010 to 65% by 2030, bringing the number of workers in the formal sector to 25.3m people and lowering unemployment from 25% to 6%. While its fiscal space is narrow, long-term investments in infrastructure, education and health are expected to be key to attaining its growth potential. Recent years have seen both the public and private sectors look to strengthen regulatory frameworks in mining and industry – in some cases, like the automotive sector, with impressive results.
