Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A very engaging read about how time travel has captured our imaginations . . . You will find a number of surprising discoveries awaiting you.” —Fred Alan Wolf, author of Taking the Quantum Leap The idea of time travel has tantalized humans for millennia. We can send humans into space, but roaming through time has eluded us. Do the laws of physics demand that we stay forever trapped in the present? This Book Is From the Future will explore: Time travel theories and machines of the past, present, and future Time and the multiverse: why wormholes, parallel universes, and extra dimensions might allow for time travel The paranormal aspects of time: Might we already be “mentally” time traveling? Mysterious time shifts, slips, and warps that people are reporting all over the world. Are we experiencing coexisting timelines? Time travel conspiracy theories: Are we already walking among real time travelers? Has a real time machine already been created in a top-secret government facility? “From pop culture fantasies to wild conspiracy theories to the latest scientific thinking, This Book Is From the Future is a fascinating exploration of our collective obsession with time. Jones and Flaxman cover the subject from just about every angle, with a dash of humor and the serious scientific curiosity it deserves.” —Stephen Wagner, author of True Tales of the Ouija Board “A superb study of how past, present and future may be manipulated, controlled and even altered. Back to the Future and H. G. Wells’s The Time Machine might not be mere fiction, after all!” —Nick Redfern, author of Final Events

Book The Villain s Journey

Download or read book The Villain s Journey written by Valerie Estelle Frankel and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-11-08 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The villain's journey is rare in popular culture--most characters are fully-formed tyrants with little to no story arc. However, a few particularly epic series take the time to develop complex villains, including Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Smallville, Babylon 5, Game of Thrones, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Increasingly, villains' origin stories have found new popularity through films like Wicked, Maleficent, and Despicable Me, alongside shows starring serial killers and Machiavellian schemers. This book examines the villain's decline and subsequent struggle toward redemption, asking why these characters are willing to cross moral lines that "good" characters are not. The first half follows characters like Loki, Jessica Jones and Killmonger through the villain's journey: an inverse or twisted version of scholar Joseph Cambell's hero's journey. The remainder of this book examines the many different villainous archetypes such as the trickster, the outcast, the tyrant, or the misunderstood hero in greater detail. Written for writers, creators, fans, and mythologists, this book offers a peek into the minds of some of fiction's greatest villains.

Book The Gerbil Farmer s Daughter

Download or read book The Gerbil Farmer s Daughter written by Holly Robinson and published by Crown. This book was released on 2010-06-29 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “What kind of Navy officer sits on his ship in the middle of the Mediterranean dreaming of gerbils?” That’s the question that Holly Robinson sets out to answer in this warm and rollicking memoir of life with her father, the world’s most famous gerbil czar. Starting with a few pairs of gerbils housed for curiosity’s sake in the family’s garage, Donald Robinson’s obsession with the “pocket kangaroo” developed into a lifelong passion and second career. Soon the Annapolis-trained Navy commander was breeding gerbils and writing about them for publications ranging from the ever-bouncy Highlights for Children to the erudite Science News. To support his burgeoning business, the family eventually settled on a remote hundred-acre farm with horses, sheep, pygmy goats, peacocks–and nearly nine thousand gerbils. From part-time model for her father’s bestselling pet book, How to Raise and Train Pet Gerbils, to full-time employee in the gerbil empire’s complex of prefab Sears buildings, Holly was an enthusiastic if often exasperated companion on her father’s quest to breed the perfect gerbil. Told with heart, humor, and affection, The Gerbil Farmer’s Daughter is Holly’s ode to a weird and wonderful upbringing and her truly one-of-a-kind father.

Book The Mouse and the Myth

Download or read book The Mouse and the Myth written by Dorene Koehler and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2017-04-24 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upholds “a Disney vacation as a religious experience . . . [offers] insightful arguments relating to the nature of play as well as Nietzschean philosophy” (Reading Religion). Rituals mark significant moments in our lives—perhaps none more significant than moments of lightheartedness, joy, and play. Rituals of play are among the most sacred of any of the rites in which humanity may engage. Although we may fail to recognize them, they are always present in culture, providing a kind of psychological release for their participants, child and adult alike. Disneyland is an example of the kind of container necessary for the construction of rituals of play. This work explores the original Disney theme park in Anaheim as a temple cult. It challenges the disciplines of mythological studies, religious studies, film studies, and depth psychology to broaden traditional definitions of the kind of cultural apparatus that constitute temple culture and ritual. It does so by suggesting that Hollywood’s entertainment industry has developed a platform for mythic ritual. After setting the ritualized “stage,” this book turns to the practices in Disneyland proper, analyzing the patron’s traditions within the framework of the park and beyond. It explores Disneyland’s spectacles, through selected shows and parades, and concludes with an exploration of the park’s participation in ritual renewal. “There is much to commend in Koehler’s study . . . Surely, her work should encourage others to examine myth construction and sacred-secular rituals in popular culture.”—H-Celebration
