Book excerpt: Just as ripples from a single raindrop in a pond spread into infinity, simple acts of kindness can turn into ripples of altruism and giving that last throughout eternity. A Journey of Ripples is a series of stories as told by Matt, an eyewitness to the power of paying it forward as he chronicles the experiences of his friends in Oregon. The first story begins in 1986 when Paul reaches out to help Jo Ann on the darkest day of his life: the day he buries his wife of more than fifty years. In turn, Jo Ann promises him that she will do the same for someone else. The rest of the stories tell of the extraordinary responses to that promise. This moving collection is about sacrifice and most importantly, about giving and receiving beyond our fear, pride, and circumstances.

Download or read book The Open Heart Club written by Gabriel Brownstein and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2019-10-22 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This absorbing and poignant book is not merely the story of one writer's flawed heart. It is a history of cardiac medicine, a candid personal journey, and a profound reflection on mortality. Born in 1966 with a congenital heart defect known as the tetralogy of Fallot, Gabriel Brownstein entered the world just as doctors were learning to operate on conditions like his. He received a life-saving surgery at five years old, and since then has ridden wave after wave of medical innovation, a series of interventions that have kept his heart beating. The Open Heart Club is both a memoir of a life on the edge of medicine's reach and a history of the remarkable people who have made such a life possible. It begins with the visionary anatomists of the seventeenth century, tells the stories of the doctors (all women) who invented pediatric cardiology, and includes the lives of patients and physicians struggling to understand the complexities of the human heart. The Open Heart Club is a riveting work of compassionate storytelling, a journey into the dark hinterlands between sickness and health lit by bright moments of humor and inspiration.

This book was released on 2014-10-23 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My book describe my own real legal mental case which took place when I was working as not-ethnic medical doctor/ general practitioner for the NHS in a small town in a civilized western European country. The Book describe how the legal part of my case was fabricated and run for several years by a single arrogant and dishonest local police officer with the help from few arrogant and racists social workers from the local welfare and a biased police court magistrate after 10 years of my practice because of my disagreements, disputes and quarrels with them defending the equal legal and social rights of large number my patients from the Middle East and Turkey and large number of ethnics from street gangs who were poor needy social clients of the welfare with very hard complicated psycho-social legal problems . Also my Book describes how the mental part of my case was created, describing how my mental evaluations were made by biased, incompetent, racist and dishonest evaluators using shockingly wrong methods and procedures which totally deviated from all known international guidelines and recommendations for making proper and fair mental assessment of a defendant for court. I explain my case and my claims reference to published international methods and standards. My Book shows how my incorrectly obtained mental findings were presented and explained in courts only by the police prosecutor where the judging people and the prosecutor were totally blank even in basal psychology and psychiatry and mental evaluations, when the evaluators were absent during the trials . My case shows, that even in a civilized European democratic country corruption and racial behaviors are found and practiced by the authorities and the common public towards the minorities or specific types of people and their social and legal rights. My case shows how mental evaluations and their findings can be abused by all parts involved in a legal mental case to achieve specific purposes .My case shows how the bias, the incompetence and the dishonest behaviors of the mental evaluators are added to the unreliability, invalidity and the inaccuracies found in present time psychological tests and the mental diagnostic systems can magnify the harmful consequences on the evaluated when mental evaluations are abused to achieve specific purposes. Download or read book Childlessness in the Age of Communication written by Cristina Archetti and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-03-25 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cristina Archetti started researching childlessness after being diagnosed with "unexplained infertility". She soon discovered that, although involuntary childlessness affects an increasing number of women and men across the world, this topic is shrouded taboo and shame. This book is both a first-person reflection about the existential questions posed by involuntary childlessness and a readable account of the way the silence surrounding this topic is socially and politically constructed. Revealing the invisible mechanisms that, from the microscopic details of everyday life to policy, make up the structure of silence around childlessness, Archetti demonstrates what it means not to have children in a society that is organized around families. Through a prose that mixes analysis, excerpts of interviews, media fragments, and evocative writing, she develops a new language of feeling-in-the-body fit for the twenty-first century and exposes the devastating effects infertility has on relationships, identity, health and well-being, in societies that fetishize parenthood. Childlessness in the Age of Communication draws upon a range of disciplines and fields including sociology, health, gender and sexuality studies, communication, politics and anthropology. It is a book for all those interested in childlessness and innovative qualitative research methodologies.

Download or read book Whose Body is it Anyway written by Cécile Fabre and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-04-06 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the prevailing liberal ethos, if there is one thing that is beyond the reach of others, it is our body in particular, and our person in general: our legal and political tradition is such that we have the right to deny others access to our person and body, even though doing so would harm those who need personal services from us, or body parts. However, we lack the right to use ourselves as we wish in order to raise income, even though we do not necessarily harm others by doing so—-even though we might in fact benefit them by doing so. Cécile Fabre's aim in this book is to show that, according to the principles of distributive justice which inform most liberal democracies, both in practice and in theory, it should be exactly the other way around: that is, if it is true that we lack the right to withhold access to material resources from those who need them, we also lack the right to withhold access to our body from those who need it; but we do, under some circumstances, have the right to decide how to use it in order to raise income. More specifically, she argues in favour of the confiscation of body parts and personal services, as well as of the commercialization of organs, sex, and reproductive capacities.
