Book Murder on the Mediterranean

Download or read book Murder on the Mediterranean written by Alexander Campion and published by Kensington Books. This book was released on 2014 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Escaping the demands of Paris police work, Commissaire Capucine Le Tellier embarks on a well-deserved Mediterranean cruise. But wherever the renowned inspector goes, murder is sure to be close on the horizon. . . On the azure waters off the coasts of Corsica and Sardinia, what could be more relaxing and rewarding than traipsing around the Mediterranean enjoying the local culinary delights. Among the invited bon vivants are Capucine, her husband, the celebrated restaurant critic, her special agent cousin Jacques, a famed bar owner, and even her boss. To all appearances, the table is set for an affair to remember. In the midst of this pleasure cruise, Natalie, the yacht's cook, is lost overboard. A sudden squall is the assumed cause. But once a bullet hole is discovered in her jacket, suspicions quickly shift and the onboard bonhomie suffers accordingly. When a shell casing is uncovered that matches the gun Capucine is authorized to carry, for the first time in her stellar career, the hardworking detective finds herself the prime suspect. For Capucine, these are clearly not the deep waters she envisioned as part of her holiday. As the motives become murkier, the gifted Commissaire will need to harness all her powers of deduction to get to the bottom of the mystery--before she ends up at the bottom of the sea. Download or read book A History of Murder written by Pieter Spierenburg and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a fascinating and insightful overview of seven centuries of murder in Europe. It tells the story of the changing face of violence and documents the long-term decline in the incidence of homicide. From medieval vendettas to stylised duels, from the crime passionel of the modern period right up to recent public anxieties about serial killings and underworld assassinations, the book offers a richly illustrated account of murder’s metamorphoses. In this original and compelling contribution, Spierenburg sheds new light on several important themes. He looks, for example, at the transformation of homicide from a private matter, followed by revenge or reconciliation, into a public crime, always subject to state intervention. Combining statistical data with a cultural approach, he demonstrates the crucial role gender played in the spiritualisation of male honour and the subsequent reduction of male-on-male aggression, as well as offering a comparative view of how different social classes practised and reacted to violence. This authoritative study will be of great value to students and scholars of the history of crime and violence, criminology and the sociology of violence. At a time when murder rates are rising and public fears about violent crime are escalating, this book will also interest the general reader intrigued by how our relationship with murder reached this point.

Book excerpt: The Mediterranean Mystery There is bloodshed and hysteria when an unknown man of Mediterranean appearance is murdered on Brighton beach. His body is discovered under a towel by Winnie, who herself is later found battered and left for dead. Experienced DCI Harry Webb and new young detective Andrew Brown are paired by DCS John Street to solve the web of crimes which ensue, made more complex by all possible suspects seemingly linked in one way or another. Two illusive men dressed in black and driving a black Ford are established as the prime suspects. As well as looking for murderers, the detectives soon realise they have stumbled on a diamond smuggling racket. Bags of diamonds are found behind the radio systems of MGB cars rented out by the Classic Cars garage owned by Max Grey. Initially Max is most unhelpful and a prime suspect until an attempt is also made on his life. Clues found in Mr Pantazis's (the murdered man's) hotel room and clients wanting to rent MGBs specifically from Max Grey lead the two detectives to follow up investigations in Cyprus where Chief Galanis of the Cypriot police is their contact. Much to Harry and Andrew's amusement he also has a remarkable penchant for literary quotes, especially by Lewis Carroll - a theme picked up throughout the book. On the plane over to Cyprus Harry revealed to Andrew the work he did in the past with Special Branch could now well make him a target for revenge attacks by relatives of those he convicted. Hence a major part of Andrew's job would be to watch his back. ... This theory goes horribly wrong however when Andrew is mistaken for Harry on the very first evening and is violently abducted from his hotel room by the two men in black. He is held prisoner at an isolated old farm house near the Greek/Turkish border deep in the Troodos mountains. He eventually managed a daring escape and fled to safety to the heavily guarded RAF Mount Olympus Radar Station. From there Harry, Andrew and Chief Galanis are reunited. They find a lady from hotel cctv footage, who is Mr Pantazis's partner, Angie Sakalis. She has a beautiful young daughter Chloe who Andrew immediately took to ... Information from them linked the two men in black to the non-convicted murder of Mrs Sakalis's husband. They were probably working for an ex partner in their diamond emporium, Mr Nico Castellanos, who used the pseudonym Bert Barber in England. Cypriot police eventually discover the mountain hideout of the two wanted men. Harry and Andrew are fitted out with bullet proof vests and guns and a gun fight ensues at the deserted farmhouse. As a result two men are shot dead, two are badly injured and there follows a race against time to the nearest hospital. There is speculation on who is responsible for this - Harry has his thoughts but Andrew thinks his theory is right ... after intensive investigations and with the aid of an airline bookings office the truth unravels - but not before the astonishing revelations and subsequent suicide of ...

Book Murder In Matera

Download or read book Murder In Matera written by Helene Stapinski and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2017-05-23 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A murder mystery, a model of investigative reporting, a celebration of the fierce bonds that hold families together through tragedies…Murder in Matera is a gem.”— San Francisco Chronicle "Tantalizing" — NPR “A thrilling detective story… Stapinski pursues the study of her family’s criminal genealogy with unexpected emotional results.” — Library Journal A writer goes deep into the heart of Italy to unravel a century-old family mystery in this spellbinding memoir that blends the suspenseful twists of Making a Murderer and the emotional insight of Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan Novels. Since childhood, Helene Stapinski heard lurid tales about her great-great-grandmother, Vita. In Southern Italy, she was a loose woman who had murdered someone. Immigrating to America with three children, she lost one along the way. Helene’s youthful obsession with Vita deepened as she grew up, eventually propelling the journalist to Italy, where, with her own children in tow, she pursued the story, determined to set the record straight. Finding answers would take Helene ten years and numerous trips to Basilicata, the rural "instep" of Italy’s boot—a mountainous land rife with criminals, superstitions, old-world customs, and desperate poverty. Though false leads sent her down blind alleys, Helene’s dogged search, aided by a few lucky—even miraculous—breaks and a group of colorful local characters, led her to the truth. Yes, the family tales she’d heard were true: There had been a murder in Helene’s family, a killing that roiled 1870s Italy. But the identities of the killer and victim weren’t who she thought they were. In revisiting events that happened more than a century before, Helene came to another stunning realization—she wasn’t who she thought she was, either. Weaving Helene’s own story of discovery with the tragic tale of Vita’s life, Murder in Matera is a literary whodunit and a moving tale of self-discovery that brings into focus a long ago tragedy in a little-known region remarkable for its stunning sunny beauty and dark buried secrets.
