Book excerpt: The 2018 edition of The State of Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries (SoMFi 2018), the flagship publication of the GFCM, provides a comprehensive overview of regional and subregional trends in Mediterranean and Black Sea fisheries. Bringing together data and indicators submitted by GFCM contracting parties and cooperating non- contracting parties on stock status, national catches, fleet and socio-economic aspects as well as information obtained from other sources, SoMFi 2018 aims to provide objective, reliable and up-to-date information to a wide audience and support decision-making in fisheries. SoMFi 2018 is divided into eight chapters. The first analyses the current composition of the fishing fleet, including information on fleet capacity, vessel types and age classes. Next comes a detailed breakdown of overall capture fishery production with comparisons of the latest figures to data from previous years, highlighting significant changes and trends. The report then looks at what this means for regional economies and for the livelihoods of the people who depend on the fisheries sector. As small-scale fisheries make up a large majority of Mediterranean and Black Sea fisheries, they receive special focus. SoMFi 2018 also provides the most detailed assessment yet of the state of fishery resources in the region. It shows the current status of the stocks, including those most at risk from overfishing, and looks at related issues like discards and incidental catches of vulnerable species. The report then highlights GFCM’s strategic efforts to build long-term sustainability, as it works with its stakeholders to sustainably manage fisheries and improve coastal livelihoods across the region. The MD and ND have been identified as region-specific healthy diets. To support decision-makers in shaping context-specific diet and nutrition policies, this review provides a summary of the NCD burden and activities in the Region; outlines the NCD-related health benefits of the MD and ND; describes interventions and policies in 15 countries; reviews four identified studies into the effectiveness of MD and ND policies on NCD outcomes; and discusses policy implications and options. In the context of MD and ND interventions for NCDs, there remains a Region-wide need to increase translation of evidence into action, monitor and evaluate the impact of existing policies on NCD outcomes and share activities through public platforms to support information sharing.

Book excerpt: The orthodox view of slavery in the ancient Mediterranean holds that Greece and Rome were its only 'genuine slave societies', that is, societies in which slave labour contributed significantly to the economy and underpinned the wealth of elites. Other societies, traditionally labelled 'societies with slaves', are thought to have made little use of slave labour and therefore have been largely ignored in recent scholarship. This volume presents a radically different view of the ancient Eastern Mediterranean world, showing that elite exploitation of slave labour in Greece and the Near East shared some fundamental similarities, although the degree of elite dependence on slaves varied from region to region. Whilst slavery was indeed particularly highly developed in Greece and Rome, it was also economically entrenched in Carthage, and played a not insignificant role in the affairs of elites in Israel, Assyria, Babylonia, and Persia. The differing degrees to which Eastern Mediterranean elites exploited slave labour represents the outcome of a complex interplay between cultural, economic, political, geographical, and demographic factors. Proceeding on a regional basis, this book tracks the ways in which local conditions shaped a wide variety of Greek and Near Eastern slave systems, and how the legal architecture of slavery in individual regions was altered and adapted to accommodate these needs. The result is a nuanced exploration of the economic underpinnings of Greek elite culture that sets its reliance on slavery within a broader historical context and sheds light on the complex circumstances from which it emerged.
