Download or read book To Save Humanity written by Julio Frenk and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2015 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The UN was not created to take mankind to heaven, but to save humanity from hell." --Dag Hammarskjöld, United Nations Secretary-General 1953-1961 The turn of the 21st century was an objective low point in the history of human health: AIDS was scourging Africa, millions of women died each year in child birth, and billions suffered under malnourishment and poverty. In response, the United Nations launched its Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), an ambitious charter that since 2000 has measurably reduced the worldwide burdens of poverty, hunger, and disease. With the MDGs set to expire in 2015, continued progress on these fronts is anything but certain. In addition to the persisting threats of the 20th century, globalization has sped the development of new threats--pandemics, climate change, chronic disease--that now threaten rich and poor countries equally. "To Save Humanity" is a collection of short, honest essays on what single issue matters most for the future of global health. Authored by the world's leading voices from science, politics, and social advocacy, this collection is both a primer on the major issues of our time and a potential blueprint for post-2015 health and development. This unparalleled collection will provide illuminating and thought-provoking reading for anyone invested in our collective future and well-being.

Book Wisdom A Very Valuable Virtue That Cannot Be Bought

Download or read book Wisdom A Very Valuable Virtue That Cannot Be Bought written by Jason A. Merchey and published by Values of the Wise, LLC. This book was released on 2022-03 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Will a deep appreciation of wisdom lead to more happiness, flourishing, and success in life? Why is America increasingly plagued by tribalism, elitism, materialism, and ME-ism? What do philosophy, psychology, and personal growth have to say about wisdom? Are the Bible and other religious texts legitimate and useful sources of human wisdom? Though powerful and beautiful, philosophy has typically discouraged many readers who find it difficult, abstract, and boring. Moreover, modern psychology and age-old personal growth principles are given a bad name by many social media personalities who oversimplify them in an effort to make money. What is wisdom, how can it help me, and is this book authentic, reliable and useful ? Four-time author Jason Merchey believes wisdom can be developed and acquired, and improving your understanding of wisdom will certainly lead to living a better life! Wisdom is one of humankind's oldest and most prized virtues, yet it is not much respected nowadays. . . This new book has the potential to assist readers to live a life that harnesses the power of philosophy, critical thinking, and applied psychology. These secular sources of wisdom are not as complicated as they may seem, and indeed are road maps to a better life. Greater wisdom leads to improved personal growth, happiness, and success. Wisdom is not simple or plug-and-play, but it will yield its secrets to those who love it. In fact, the word philosophy is Greek for “the love of wisdom.” Wisdom is a comprehensive, transparent exploration of ancient and intriguing concepts combined with critical thinking, compassion, and other aspects of wisdom. Brimming with examples of psychological principles, careful analysis, and insightful quotes from many cultures and civilizations, it provides a basis for authentic intellectual, emotional, spiritual and moral growth. The author deftly combines digestible psychological research findings, compelling personal stories, and useful quotations about wisdom. Anyone aiming to build a life of value—one that yields purpose and happiness—should consider wisdom to be their basis. Wisdom has been one of humanity's highest aspirations for millennia. Jason Merchey has dealt with mental illness most of his life, but also earned a master's degree in clinical psychology and trained as a psychotherapist. No stranger to “the big questions” and the difficulty of life, he has studied wisdom, values and virtues for twenty years. In addition to personal benefits, this book sheds light on some of America’s significant social problems. The great philosopher Socrates himself knew that ancient Athens, Greece was in serious trouble. If we were all wiser and we had more enlightened and humane priorities, many of the problems that mark communities and nations would give way to more love, fellowship, and prosperity. This deep and eclectic book is full of ideas and insights that will assist you to: * Discover and prioritize wisdom in your personal life and relationships * Achieve greater fulfillment, happiness and self-confidence * Bring about true success based on self-knowledge and values * Make a positive difference in your community—and the world as a whole One cannot buy wisdom per se, but investing in this affordable book provides a refreshing opportunity for self-improvement and intellectual growth. It has the potential to assist you to make wisdom your greatest strength!

Book Thrive

Download or read book Thrive written by Arianna Huffington and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2015-03-17 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Thrive, Arianna Huffington makes an impassioned and compelling case for the need to redefine what it means to be successful in today's world. Arianna Huffington's personal wake-up call came in the form of a broken cheekbone and a nasty gash over her eye--the result of a fall brought on by exhaustion and lack of sleep. As the cofounder and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post Media Group--one of the fastest growing media companies in the world--celebrated as one of the world's most influential women, and gracing the covers of magazines, she was, by any traditional measure, extraordinarily successful. Yet as she found herself going from brain MRI to CAT scan to echocardiogram, to find out if there was any underlying medical problem beyond exhaustion, she wondered is this really what success feels like? As more and more people are coming to realize, there is far more to living a truly successful life than just earning a bigger salary and capturing a corner office. Our relentless pursuit of the two traditional metrics of success--money and power--has led to an epidemic of burnout and stress-related illnesses, and an erosion in the quality of our relationships, family life, and, ironically, our careers. In being connected to the world 24/7, we're losing our connection to what truly matters. Our current definition of success is, as Thrive shows, literally killing us. We need a new way forward. In a commencement address Arianna gave at Smith College in the spring of 2013, she likened our drive for money and power to two legs of a three-legged stool. They may hold us up temporarily, but sooner or later we're going to topple over. We need a third leg--a third metric for defining success--to truly thrive. That third metric, she writes in Thrive, includes our well-being, our ability to draw on our intuition and inner wisdom, our sense of wonder, and our capacity for compassion and giving. As Arianna points out, our eulogies celebrate our lives very differently from the way society defines success. They don't commemorate our long hours in the office, our promotions, or our sterling PowerPoint presentations as we relentlessly raced to climb up the career ladder. They are not about our resumes--they are about cherished memories, shared adventures, small kindnesses and acts of generosity, lifelong passions, and the things that made us laugh. In this deeply personal book, Arianna talks candidly about her own challenges with managing time and prioritizing the demands of a career and raising two daughters--of juggling business deadlines and family crises, a harried dance that led to her collapse and to her "aha moment." Drawing on the latest groundbreaking research and scientific findings in the fields of psychology, sports, sleep, and physiology that show the profound and transformative effects of meditation, mindfulness, unplugging, and giving, Arianna shows us the way to a revolution in our culture, our thinking, our workplace, and our lives.

Through short, accessible phrases, readers will learn to reorient thinking when their inner critic shows up. You’ve probably heard it said, and have maybe spoken the words yourself, “I am my own worst critic.” A negative internal running commentary contributes to a lack of confidence and low self-worth in many people.Well-known mindfulness meditation teacher and author, Th鲨se Jacobs-Stewart, offers one of the most effective approaches to calming a self-critical mind: the ancient Buddhist practice of using “Compassion Slogans.” Combining thought-awareness, loving-kindness practice and mindfulness meditation, this simple, time-tested method can be used throughout the day to quiet your critical voices and ease the mind. Through short, accessible phrases, you will learn to reorient your thinking when your inner critic shows up. Instead of making a negative thought stronger by fighting it, you will learn to let thoughts dissipate through lack of attention. When you remember to “begin kindness with yourself,” you will find that keeping a compassionate perspective on all that you do and say will allow you to transform your inner critic with a kinder voice. Some examples of mindfulness slogans:Everything is of the nature to change (even me)Abandon poisonous food (thoughts)Rest in the openness of mindBegin kindness with ourselves

Book The Power Within

Download or read book The Power Within written by Anurag Rai and published by Superhuman Education. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is not written by a Monk or a Spiritual Guru. It is written by someone who has deadlines to meet, clients to attend and kids to look after. This is a book by an ENTREPRENEUR for ENTREPRENEURS and PROFESSIONALS. The world around us has changed, and going away from the material world and meditating on a mountain is simply not viable for most of us. Hence, we need a practice that is for our age and still brings the same benefits. You may ask why bother to meditate? And what’s all this buzz about? Over the past few decades, our technology has grown way faster than our consciousness. We live in a world that is connected yet so disconnected. We experience continuous stress on our bodies and mind in our advanced society. Why? Simply because our bodies and brains are not designed to live in high-rise buildings, eat food from microwaves, travel on airplanes, stare at screens all day, and other million things we do in the modern world. However, these things have become essentials of our life, and it’s impossible to take them out of our lives. It is, therefore, vital in today’s world that we use a practice such as meditation to take a break and recharge. Most of us are either working on improving our physical fitness or at least have intentions of doing so. Yet not many of us have ever given a thought about our mental fitness. We all want a chiseled figure, six-pack abs, and strong arms. But what about having a strong mind, without which everything else will become useless. There is only so much one can build with strong arms, but there is no limit to what you can build with a strong mind. Research shows that regular meditation can not only heal your mind but also make it happier, healthier, and stronger. Meditation is the fastest and the only way to upgrade your state of consciousness. If you are not meditating, you are not using your full potentials. Meditators can tap into the alpha waves of the brain to supercharge their creativity. Practicing just 10 minutes of meditation a day can improve our ability to concentrate and store information in working memory. FROM THE BACK COVER There was once a man who lost his keys. He started looking for them on the streets. A passer-by approached and asked him what he is looking for? The man replied, “His Keys.” The passer-by asked, “where did you lose it?”. He replied, “Inside the house.” We are all like this man. We are looking for the key to happiness in the wrong places. The key lies WITHIN. Meditation is a path to discover this key. WHY MEDITATING IS HARD? The primary reason why most people fail in meditation is that they are using the techniques designed for and by the monks who lived in the mountains away from the hustle present in today’s everchanging world. In the world we live in, uncertainty is the most certain thing, and life is like an emotional rollercoaster. In such situations, it would be naïve to sit down on a mat and expect the mind to stop thinking on your command. In The Power Within, Anurag Rai presents an unconventional approach to meditation. The book explains ancient techniques in a modern flair. With powerful insights and life-changing concepts, Anurag takes you on a 21 Day journey to help you form a lifelong habit. This book is full of aha moments and ground-breaking wisdom.

Download or read book Brain Meditation written by Anura Guruge and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Brain meditation' will make you more productive, more content and most of all to be blessed with a sense of serenity that you will come to cherish! As such this book will change your life fundamentally and forever for the better. It does so by changing the way you interact with the most important organ in your body - your brain. This book, written as a self-help guide, will enable you to establish a very empowering, but at the same time very soothing, oneness with your brain. You will come to regard your brain as your best friend for life. That is good since if you think about it, you are your brain and your brain is you! This book will urge you to 'think'. 'Brain meditation', the title of this book, is achieved by means of thinking - all meditation, in the end, being a function of the mind. This meditation despite these lofty outcomes is, however, not difficult to practice. It probably is the easiest of self-help programs you have ever encountered. You do not even have to devote any dedicated time to it! It can all be done in 'timeshare' mode. You do not need to purchase anything (other than this book (which can, of course, be returned), partake in any physical endeavors or involve anybody else. It is a very private and personal program that you undertake just with your brain. The program described in this book consists of two components. The first has to do with 'befriending' your brain. The other is the 'brain meditation' part, which is all about you, your brain and the new, constant, conscious interactions between you and your brain. In the end it will become an effortless regime. A much treasured symbiotic relationship between you and your (all powerful) brain. It will be the relationship that forever alters your life. For the better, of course.

Book Quick Guide to Brain Meditation

  • ISBN : 9781540551290
  • Pages : 96 pages

Download or read book Quick Guide to Brain Meditation written by Anura Guruge and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-12-09 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Brain meditation' is a modern form of meditation. It is a very pure and concentrated meditation technique. It is meant to be done on-the-fly, in background-mode. As such, you do not need to dedicate any specific time for meditation. 'Brain meditation' can be done while you brush your teeth, take a shower, wait in line for a cup of coffee, sit in traffic or at traffic lights. It is, therefore, ideally suited for today's fast-paced mobile age. Lack of time will never be an impediment. 'Brain meditation', per its name, is extremely brain-centric. The brain is the focus of all forms of meditation. 'Brain meditation' recognizes this and goes right to the source - i.e., your brain. There are no frills, there are no intermediaries. This is a meditation technique that is all about you and your brain. You don't need to sit cross-legged. You don't need to spend 20-minutes in a darkened room. You don't need to burn any incense. You don't have to wear any fancy yoga-pants. You can do - and should do - 'brain meditation' in the shower (or when taking a bath) in the buff. 'Brain meditation' is all about focusing, centering and grounding your brain/mind vis mindful thinking. Where it differs, majorly, from other forms of meditation is that you don't do this 'calm the mind' just once a day or four times a week. You do it, for a few seconds at a time, multiple times a day. That, if you think about it, is not a bad idea. What is the point of having 20-minutes of calmness at the end of a hectic day? Wouldn't it have been better if you could have snatched some respites of calmness throughout your hectic day - to help you out. Well, that is what 'brain meditation' is all about. Meditation on-the-fly, throughout the day, in background mode - while you get on with your life. This book is meant to be a self-help guide. Furthermore, it is meant to be a 'Quick Guide'. It is thus written to be 'to the point'. A more detailed description of 'brain meditation' is available, from the same author, in a companion book "Brain Meditation - For True Productivity & Serenity." 'Brain meditation' will change your life - for the better! It is extremely easy to practice and master. There is no physical effort involved, whatsoever. It is all done in your mind. Just you and your brain.
