Book Medication Assisted Treatment For Opioid Addiction in Opioid Treatment Programs Treatment Improvement Protocol TIP

Download or read book Medication Assisted Treatment For Opioid Addiction in Opioid Treatment Programs Treatment Improvement Protocol TIP written by Emily Tinkler and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TIP 43 provides best-practice guidelines for medication-assisted treatment of opioid addiction in opioid treatment programs (OTPs). The primary intended audience for this volume is substance abuse treatment providers and administrators who work in OTPs. Recommendations in the TIP are based on both an analysis of current research and determinations of best treatment practices by an expert panel. Initial chapters present introductory and background information. Remaining chapters focus on the components and important considerations of a well-run OTP. Reference citations point readers to recommended resources for more specific information, including Internet sources. Exhibits and appendices summarize key information for quick reference. The book simultaneously develops several consistent themes reflecting the beliefs of the expert contributors: (1) opioid addiction is a medical disorder and should be treated as such, not as a failure of willpower or morals; (2) comprehensive maintenance treatment, including pharmacotherapy integrated with a wide range of support services, is the treatment modality with the best record of patient recovery; (3) patients should be fully involved and respected in planning and monitoring their own treatment; and (4) OTPs need to be fully engaged with their communities to overcome the pervasive stigma that can limit program effectiveness. Appended are: (1) Bibliography; (2) Abbreviations and Acronyms; (3) Glossary; (4) Ethical Considerations in MAT; (5) Resource Panel; and (6)Field Reviewers. (Contains 49 exhibits.) [This publication was produced by Johnson, Bassin & Shaw, Inc.].

The TIP describes the nature and dimensions of opioid use disorders and their treatment in the United States, including basic principles of MAT and historical and regulatory developments. The TIP includes a discussion of the ethical considerations that arise in most OTPs, and it provides a useful summary of areas for emphasis in successfully administering MAT in OTPs.

Book Medications for Opioid Use Disorder Save Lives

Download or read book Medications for Opioid Use Disorder Save Lives written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2019-05-16 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The opioid crisis in the United States has come about because of excessive use of these drugs for both legal and illicit purposes and unprecedented levels of consequent opioid use disorder (OUD). More than 2 million people in the United States are estimated to have OUD, which is caused by prolonged use of prescription opioids, heroin, or other illicit opioids. OUD is a life-threatening condition associated with a 20-fold greater risk of early death due to overdose, infectious diseases, trauma, and suicide. Mortality related to OUD continues to escalate as this public health crisis gathers momentum across the country, with opioid overdoses killing more than 47,000 people in 2017 in the United States. Efforts to date have made no real headway in stemming this crisis, in large part because tools that already existâ€"like evidence-based medicationsâ€"are not being deployed to maximum impact. To support the dissemination of accurate patient-focused information about treatments for addiction, and to help provide scientific solutions to the current opioid crisis, this report studies the evidence base on medication assisted treatment (MAT) for OUD. It examines available evidence on the range of parameters and circumstances in which MAT can be effectively delivered and identifies additional research needed.

Book Medication assisted Treatment Program for Opioid Addiction

Download or read book Medication assisted Treatment Program for Opioid Addiction written by Danielle Hager and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose: With the growing opioid epidemic in the United States, many treatment programs for opioid addiction have begun using Medication-Assisted Treatment of opioid addiction to assist clients with detox and the journey to sobriety. This project aimed to evaluate one specific opioid addiction treatment agency in L.A. County through the use of the logic model. Hypothesis/Research Question: Are the activities/interventions provided throughout treatment at the agency supported by research and proven effective for long-term success? Methods: Researchers used resources available using annual budget reports and public information available via the agency's website, Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, and information released by The National Institute on Drug Abuse website. Researchers were able to view and learn about activities, interventions, and treatment options for participants of all ages. The agency's expected outcomes were gathered through the agency's website and Los Angeles County Department of Health Services website. The logic model was used to connect agency output with an expected outcome that was then evaluated by researchers. Unique qualities about the population and community served were discovered through literature review and information available via Los Angeles County Department of Health Services website. The information discovered, along with the agency's activities and interventions through their public website, was used to aid in the evaluation of how the agency approaches these unique qualities within the agency, their participants, and the community served. Results: Researchers used the logic model to evaluate the agency's treatment programs such as buprenorphine, individual and group therapy, EMDR, mindfulness, meditation, and neurofeedback as a holistic approach to opiate addiction. Discussion: Researchers performed research on studies and published articles discussing the outcomes of each of the six activities/interventions on the treatment of opioid addiction over time. Given the research available, researchers then discussed the implications these results have on the agency and similar agencies using activities/interventions during this opioid epidemic.
