Book Recollections of a Civil War Medical Cadet

Download or read book Recollections of a Civil War Medical Cadet written by Burt Green Wilder and published by Civil War in the North. This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In July 1862, Burt Green Wilder left Boston to join Dr. Francis Brown, a surgeon working at Judiciary Square Hospital, one of the new army pavilion hospitals in Washington, D.C. Wilder had just finished his degree in comparative anatomy at Harvard, and the chance to assist Brown rather than serve as a soldier in the army was appealing. For the next ten months Wilder worked in the hospital's wards as a medical cadet. Although he lacked formal medical training, he had aptitude, ability, and an advanced knowledge of anatomy. These qualities were increasingly valued in a medical department being reformed by the new surgeon general, William Hammond, who demanded a more scientific approach to medical care and to the creation and dissemination of medical knowledge. Forty-five years after the war ended Wilder began to draft his recollections of an era that had transformed him personally and radically altered American medicine. Richard M. Reid's introduction captures the ways the war dramatically reconfigured the American medical landscape. Prior to the war, the medical community was badly fragmented, and elite physicians felt undervalued by the American public. The war offered them the chance to assert their professional control and to make medicine more scientific and evidence-based. The introduction also includes an extensive historiographical analysis of Civil War medicine and situates Wilder's recollections in the changing direction of the field. Wilder's manuscript, largely finished but never published, is written with humor and grace and provides a revealing eyewitness account of Civil War relief services and hospital work. The army hospitals, dramatically different from the prewar institutions, became centers of medical innovation and analytical record keeping. Even medical cadets such as Wilder conducted postmortems and were encouraged to submit specimens of combat-related injuries to Hammond's newly created Army Medical Museum. His discussions of the day-to-day practice in the hospital, the war's expansion of medical knowledge, the duties of medical cadets, scientific activity, and gender relations are particularly compelling. Recollections of a Civil War Medical Cadet provides an important source to understand wartime medicine, the impact of the conflict on American medicine in the nineteenth century, and the little discussed role of the medical cadet in the army medical system.

Book Doctors In Gray The Confederate Medical Service

Download or read book Doctors In Gray The Confederate Medical Service written by Horace Herndon Cunningham and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “H. H. Cunningham’s Doctors in Gray, first published more than thirty years ago, remains the definitive work on the medical history of the Confederate army. Drawing on a prodigious array of sources, Cunningham paints as complete a picture as possible of the daunting task facing those charged with caring for the war’s wounded and sick. Of the estimated 600,000 Confederate troops, Cunningham claims the 200,000 died either from battle wounds of from illness—the majority, surprisingly, from illness. Despite these grim statistics, Confederate medical personnel frequently performed heroically under the most primitive of circumstances and made imaginative use of limited resources. Cunningham provides detailed information on the administration of the Confederate Medical Department, the establishment and organization of Confederate hospitals, the experiences of medical officers in the field, the manufacture and procurement of supplies, the causes and treatment of diseases, and the beginning of modern surgical practices.” - Print ed.

Book Recollections of a Private

Download or read book Recollections of a Private written by Warren Lee Goss and published by BIG BYTE BOOKS. This book was released on 1890-01-01 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No less a military authority than British Field Marshal Garnet Joseph Wolseley, 1st Viscount Wolseley, recommended Warren Goss's memoir for reading by military leaders. The spectrum of memoirs from the American Civil War is as broad as the men and women who experienced the nation's greatest convulsion of violence. The memoir of Warren Lee Goss spans the spectrum of the entire war. Goss fought in nearly every major battle from 1st Bull Run beyond the fall of Richmond. He was preparing for another battle when one of Sheridan's staff rode up waving his hat and shouting that Lee had surrendered. He writes: "The Army of the Potomac was the people in arms. It mirrored the diversified opinions and occupations of a free and intelligent democracy. The force that called it together was the spirit that made a government of the people possible." From a perspective of 25 years after the guns had silenced, Goss weaves a compelling tale, full of detail, still feeling the pain of sorrow, but also laced with a great deal of humor. “Here, take your shooting-iron, and march me to the Yankee army. I’m done with this doggoned Confedercy, I am!” On the way into our lines my informant inquired why he had gone back on the Confederacy. “Well, stranger, the rich men made this war, and we poor men have to do the fighting, and there’s too much fight, I reckon, for my health. I’ve been fighting ever since this blamed war began, and I can’t see no end to it!” Possessed of an education and an ability to write, Goss' private's tale is one of the best low-rank memoirs of his generation. For the first time, this long-out-of-print book is available as an affordable, well-formatted book for e-readers and smartphones. Be sure to LOOK INSIDE or download a sample.
