Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical Notes on Climate, Diseases, Hospitals, and Medical Schools, in France, Italy, and Switzerland In the first place, with regard to the investigation of the subject to which almost the whole of Part First Is devoted - viz. The influence of Southern Climates on Consumption - the inquiry 15 of such Immense importance at present, when this disease is so alarm ingly prevalent, and when its victims crowd in such numbers to the countries treated of, that the only objection I could have to the publication of my remarks, was the prospect I had of greatly enlarging them, by additional experience, at no very distant period, As, however, many circumstances, might occur to prevent the accomplishment of this hope, it has been considered better to communicate iwithout further delay, information, which, though not exten sive, may yet be'useful, than to risk, for the sake of possible improvement or personal credit, the 'occur rence of a contingency, which, after all, might pos sib] y never be attained. Book excerpt: This book looks at the variety of Britons who became residents of Florence between the end of the Napoleonic wars and the absorption of Tuscany into the kingdom of Italy. Many of them were leisured, and some aristocratic; a few were writers or artists; the British clergy and physicians who ministered to them were gentlemen. Many others were shopkeepers, merchants and even engineers. Some achieved a more profound knowledge of the country (and its language) than others, but all were affected to some degree by the momentous events which led to Italian unification.

Book excerpt: "Few diseases have been more inextricably linked with our past than tuberculosis. The ancient Greeks called it phthisis or consumption, names still familiar in the early twentieth century. They knew that coughing up or spitting of blood were bad signs. Through the Medieval Period to the modern day, Helen Bynum explores the history and development of TB throughout the world, touching on the various discoveries that have emerged about the disease, and focusing on the clinical and experimental approaches of Rene Laennec (1781-1826) and Robert Koch (1842-1910). Therapies included miraculous touching, bleeding, travel, vaccines, sanatoria, open-air therapy, and surgery, although none proved successful. A real cure finally arrived after World War II, with anti-tuberculosis drugs, characterizing a new optimism about science, health, and society. Although concerns about TB faded away in the mid-twentieth century, the disease has now returned with a vengeance. Bynum describes the emerging picture from the World Health Organization of the difficulties in managing new drug-resistant forms of the disease that have established themselves in the developing world, and in poorer parts of large cities worldwide. The story of tuberculosis, it seems, is far from over."--
