Book Looking Back

Download or read book Looking Back written by Eugene R. Celano M. D. and published by Publishamerica Incorporated. This book was released on 2007-07 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Looking back, I can recall many memories from my careers. Early training led to the experience necessary to follow two careers, aviation and medicine. Being a Navy pilot was a good background to prepare me for the practice of surgery. Both require precision and accuracy. The passage of time has dramatically changed the practice of medicine and surgery. I was privileged to see some of the changes from the eyes of a surgeon practicing in a small town. Fifty years ago a doctor had to depend on his training and expertise to diagnose and treat illnesses. Todayas physicians also have the benefit of excellent technological advances to improve patient care. This book includes descriptions of some of these advances. It presents interesting experiences in the operating room and emergency room, as well as the trials and tribulations of starting my surgical practice. I share some thoughts on medical ethics, malpractice, and health care.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories Musings of a Hospital Surgeon IT is nearly fifty years - to be quite accurate, forty seven years, six months - since I entered as a student at one of our large London Hospitals. From that day to this, I have practically led a hospital life. I am an Honours Graduate of the University of London, and a Fellow Of a Royal College and a Fellow of a Royal Society. I have taught students; and examined in more than one British University, and in more than one degree granting college. I have been President of one Royal Medical Society, and of two other Medical Societies. I have been a Manager of one large General Hospital; and am, at the present time, a Governor of another. I give this record of my past career as an introduction to what I venture to hope will be accepted with all the greater credence and with all the more thoughtful consideration, I trust, it will thereby merit. Book Judith s Pavilion

Book excerpt: A doctor's memoir in the best tradition of William Carlos Williams, Marc Flitter recreates the life-or-death drama of brain surgery as he has practiced it for more than twenty years, filling an imaginary hospital wing with the true stories of the patients and colleagues whose fates will haunt him forever. "His prose is as elegant and delicate as his surgery, and his characters come to life as those from the best short stories do, and yet their power derives from our realization that these are actual people whose lives have transformed the physician who encountered them" (The New York Times Book Review).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over a century the focus of psychotherapy has been on what ails us, with the therapeutic process resting upon the assumption that unearthing past traumas, correcting faulty thinking, and restoring dysfunctional relationships is curative. And indeed, they are - but in the rush to identify and reduce symptoms of mental disorder, something important has been overlooked: the positives. Should enhancing well-being, and building upon character strengths and virtues, be explicit goals of therapy? Positive Psychotherapy provides therapists with a session-by-session therapeutic approach based on the principles of positive psychology, a burgeoning area of study examining the conditions and processes that enable individuals, communities, and institutions to flourish. This clinician's manual begins with an overview of the theoretical framework for positive psychotherapy, exploring character strengths and positive psychology practices, processes, and mechanisms of change. The second half of the book is contains 15 positive psychotherapy sessions, each complete with core concepts, guidelines, skills, and worksheets for practicing skills learned in session. Each session also includes at least one vignette as well as discussion of cross-cultural implications. Mental health professionals of all orientations will find in Positive Psychotherapy a refreshing alternative to symptom-based approaches that will endow clients with a sense of purpose and meaning that many have found lacking in more traditional therapies.

Book Fragility Fracture Nursing

Download or read book Fragility Fracture Nursing written by Karen Hertz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-15 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This open access book aims to provide a comprehensive but practical overview of the knowledge required for the assessment and management of the older adult with or at risk of fragility fracture. It considers this from the perspectives of all of the settings in which this group of patients receive nursing care. Globally, a fragility fracture is estimated to occur every 3 seconds. This amounts to 25 000 fractures per day or 9 million per year. The financial costs are reported to be: 32 billion EUR per year in Europe and 20 billon USD in the United States. As the population of China ages, the cost of hip fracture care there is likely to reach 1.25 billion USD by 2020 and 265 billion by 2050 (International Osteoporosis Foundation 2016). Consequently, the need for nursing for patients with fragility fracture across the world is immense. Fragility fracture is one of the foremost challenges for health care providers, and the impact of each one of those expected 9 million hip fractures is significant pain, disability, reduced quality of life, loss of independence and decreased life expectancy. There is a need for coordinated, multi-disciplinary models of care for secondary fracture prevention based on the increasing evidence that such models make a difference. There is also a need to promote and facilitate high quality, evidence-based effective care to those who suffer a fragility fracture with a focus on the best outcomes for recovery, rehabilitation and secondary prevention of further fracture. The care community has to understand better the experience of fragility fracture from the perspective of the patient so that direct improvements in care can be based on the perspectives of the users. This book supports these needs by providing a comprehensive approach to nursing practice in fragility fracture care.
