Book excerpt: From Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry to supermodel Tyra Banks, thinness is in today's media, which has proved to be hazardous to the health of African-American women in the United States. This study, using Festinger's social comparison theory, seeks to examine media effects on African-American females' moods and self-body images. Forty-two African-American, college-aged females were exposed to four fictitious advertisements, which were similar in appearance to ads found in poplar women's magazines. Two of the ads displayed extremely thin models, while two of the ads displayed extremely heavy models. Fourteen subjects saw the heavy models while 28 subjects saw the thin models. The subjects completed a mood scale and a body self-esteem scale prior to and after being exposed to the images. Both surveys were analyzed to discover whether the images affected the subjects' moods and self-body images. Both groups' mood scores and body self-esteem scores decreased after being exposed to the idealized images; however, the body self-esteem scores for the women who saw the heavier models decreased more so. Festinger's social comparison theory held true in this study. Moreover, the questions that seemed to change most significantly included questions about speaking in front of a group of people and questions about dating relationships.

Book excerpt: Self-esteem and body image disturbances prominently figure into many physical and psychological health disorders such as depression, eating disorders, anxiety disorders, and chemical dependency. In Euro-American culture, media images of femininity and physical attractiveness reinforce generally held perceptions of the idealized female beauty as tall, white, slender, and often blond and blue eyed. The physical morphology of African-American women does not genetically "fit" this westernized standard of beauty with implications for their mental health. The socialization of African-American women in a culture that embraces a different ethnic standard of beauty influences their perceptions of how physically attractive they see themselves. This may affect their self-esteem and produce body image disturbances that put them at risk for mental health problems. Many of these women seek emotional healing and a sense of empowerment from the mental health care system. Mental health professionals must consider that gender and racial influences, embedded in a Eurocentric aesthetic, play a significant role in providing culturally competent mental health care. Dimensional analysis was used in this grounded theory study to produce theoretical understandings of these societal and psychological issues. The Psychological Integration of the Afrocentric-Self is the central dimension that creates an understanding of how many African-American women resist a Eurocentric aesthetic and develop their own perceptions of physical attractiveness. Linked dimensions included the legacies of slavery and resistance that influenced the roles of the family, society and the media on the self-esteem and body images of African-American women. Conducting this research from a Black feminist perspective provided an avenue for these participants to share their experiences of racism, sexism, and classism in this society and to surface how they resist this oppression. The self-defined standpoint shared by each participant was deemed valid knowledge because it was "her truth" and a true expression of her experiences in the context of her life. A complex, multi-dimensional way of knowing was generated through the voices of these participants. The application of this new understanding to clinical practice in mental health settings is beneficial to the researcher, African-American women, the mental health community, and society.

Specifically, this study examined how Black women define beauty by means of variables such as body shape, skin complexion, and hair texture; whether African American women ages 18-30 compared themselves to media images; and if so, did comparison to these media images impact African American women's body satisfaction. In addition, this study explored if African American women felt pressure to adopt beauty standards attributed to the dominant culture, as well as the role of racial identity in forming beauty standards and social comparison behavior. Twelve African American women were interviewed and findings of this exploratory research illustrated that the Black community has different standards than the traditional beauty standards of the U.S. Even though interviewees articulated standards of beauty for women in the Black community, there was a lack of uniformity in how these women felt about their own attractiveness: some identified with the Black beauty standards, while others did not. In addition, opinions varied regarding Black women's engagement in social comparison behavior and whether it was related to racial identity or body satisfaction. Limitations of study included: how Black women define social comparison behavior and racial identity, self-identification of participants, and the lack of Caucasian women included in this study. However, this research still provided rich data exploring Black women's perceptions of beauty among other issues within the Black community. Future research is required to better understand influences shaping standards of beauty within this subculture of the United States and recommendations are provided in the last chapter.

Book excerpt: The representation of African American women is an important issue in the overall study of how women are portrayed in film, and has received serious attention in recent years. Traditionally, "women of color," particularly African American women, have been at the margins of studies of women's on-screen depictions--or excluded altogether. This work focuses exclusively on the sexual objectification of African American women in film from the 1980s to the early 2000s. Critics of the negative sexual imagery have long speculated that control by African American filmmakers would change how African American women are depicted. This work examines sixteen films made by males both white and black to see how the imagery might change with the race of the filmmaker. Four dimensions are given special attention: the diversity of the women's roles and relationships with men, the sexual attitudes of the African American female characters, their attitudes towards men, and their nonverbal and verbal sexual behaviors. This work also examines the role culture has played in perpetuating the images, how film influences viewers' perception of African American women and their sexuality, and how the imagery polarizes women by functioning as a regulator of their sexual behaviors based on cultural definitions of the feminine.

However, Black women’s spirits of survival and resiliency have passed from generation to generation. This study utilized heuristic, grounded theory to generate theory regarding sense of self for African American female millennials within HE support roles. The study extended current research on younger Black women and their self-concept by examining multiple data, including an online mixed questionnaire, in-depth interviews, and a job-profile document review. With the social media hashtags #BlackGirlMagic #MelaninPoppin, and evolved images in the media of Black womanhood, such as, awkward Black girl, Black women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), among other areas—they are telling their own stories. The core categories of Black Titles Matter, Black Self Matters, Black Work Matters, and Black Support Matters generated the Same, but Different Identity Theory, inspired by the Black Lives Matter and #MeToo movements. These movements are examples of how Black women can lead a generation by ‘talking back’ (hooks, 1989, 2015) and liberating their voices. Implications of findings for transforming HE environments and cultures to support their growth and development include enhancing hiring practices/job postings, creating inclusive environments, millennial career advancement programs, affinity group/networking opportunities, mentorship programming, and supervisor cultural diversity training.
