Book excerpt: Theobald Mechling (d.1765) and his brother, Jacob immigrated with a group of Palatinates from Germany (via Rotterdam) to Philadelphia in 1728. There is a possibility that the Mechlings came from Strelitz which is located in Mechlinburg, Germany. They engaged in the tannery trade while living in Germantown, Pennsylvania. Theobald is also spelled as Deobald or Dewalt. He married Anna Elizabeth Lauer, the daughter of John Peter and Anna Margaret Lauer. They secured warrants for land in Bucks County, PA and moved there in 1734. Their son, Dewalt (John Theobald) (1731-1816) married Savilla Kohler. Their third son, John Jacob (1747-1824) married Catherine (possibly Catherine Hittel) (1748-1832). They had nine children before they followed Jacob's elder brother, Dewalt to Westmoreland Co., PA. They settled in Hempfield Twp. Their son John (1768-1827) married Margaretta Saumes, daughter of Adam and Mary Saumes. Descendants lived in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Missouri, Kansas and elsewhere. Several generations of descendants are given.
