Book Musculoskeletal Disorders and the Workplace

Download or read book Musculoskeletal Disorders and the Workplace written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-05-24 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every year workers' low-back, hand, and arm problems lead to time away from jobs and reduce the nation's economic productivity. The connection of these problems to workplace activities-from carrying boxes to lifting patients to pounding computer keyboards-is the subject of major disagreements among workers, employers, advocacy groups, and researchers. Musculoskeletal Disorders and the Workplace examines the scientific basis for connecting musculoskeletal disorders with the workplace, considering people, job tasks, and work environments. A multidisciplinary panel draws conclusions about the likelihood of causal links and the effectiveness of various intervention strategies. The panel also offers recommendations for what actions can be considered on the basis of current information and for closing information gaps. This book presents the latest information on the prevalence, incidence, and costs of musculoskeletal disorders and identifies factors that influence injury reporting. It reviews the broad scope of evidence: epidemiological studies of physical and psychosocial variables, basic biology, biomechanics, and physical and behavioral responses to stress. Given the magnitude of the problem-approximately 1 million people miss some work each year-and the current trends in workplace practices, this volume will be a must for advocates for workplace health, policy makers, employers, employees, medical professionals, engineers, lawyers, and labor officials.

Book Muscle Homeostasis and Regeneration

Download or read book Muscle Homeostasis and Regeneration written by Antonio Musarò and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-11-20 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a collection of original research and review articles addressing the intriguing field of the cellular and molecular players involved in muscle homeostasis and regeneration. One of the most ambitious aspirations of modern medical science is the possibility of regenerating any damaged part of the body, including skeletal muscle. This desire has prompted clinicians and researchers to search for innovative technologies aimed at replacing organs and tissues that are compromised. In this context, the papers, collected in this book, addressing a specific aspects of muscle homeostasis and regeneration under physiopathologic conditions, will help us to better understand the underlying mechanisms of muscle healing and will help to design more appropriate therapeutic approaches to improve muscle regeneration and to counteract muscle diseases.

  • ISBN : 3709186188

Download or read book Muscle Transplantation written by G. Freilinger and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was a long and troublesome history but an inspiring and excltmg one too-from the time of Zielonko, a Russian pathologist who in 1874 first transplanted muscles, to the present day microneurovascular muscle graft. Today we know that for functional recovery of muscle tissue vascularisation and neurotisation are of equal importance. With the establishment of microsurgery of small vessels and nerves, its application for myopias tic operations has gained increasing interest. It was my intention to bring together leading authorities from all over the world in the field of muscle transplantation. Open questions and unsolved problems had to be discussed between research workers in the basic medical sciences and our clinical colleagues; in this way progress can best be accomplished. This publication is the result of the "Vienna Muscle Symposium" (June 13-14, 1980). It gives an up-to-date viewpoint and should act as a stimulus to all who are interested in this particular field. I wish to express my sincere thanks to those who have contributed to this publication, to the two co-editors J. Holle and B. M. Carlson for their effective cooperation, and to Springer-Verlag Wien for their prompt and most efficient work.

Book The Endothelium

  • Author : Michel Félétou
  • Publisher : Morgan & Claypool Publishers
  • Release : 2011
  • ISBN : 1615041230
  • Pages : 309 pages

Download or read book The Endothelium written by Michel Félétou and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2011 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The endothelium, a monolayer of endothelial cells, constitutes the inner cellular lining of the blood vessels (arteries, veins and capillaries) and the lymphatic system, and therefore is in direct contact with the blood/lymph and the circulating cells. The endothelium is a major player in the control of blood fluidity, platelet aggregation and vascular tone, a major actor in the regulation of immunology, inflammation and angiogenesis, and an important metabolizing and an endocrine organ. Endothelial cells controls vascular tone, and thereby blood flow, by synthesizing and releasing relaxing and contracting factors such as nitric oxide, metabolites of arachidonic acid via the cyclooxygenases, lipoxygenases and cytochrome P450 pathways, various peptides (endothelin, urotensin, CNP, adrenomedullin, etc.), adenosine, purines, reactive oxygen species and so on. Additionally, endothelial ectoenzymes are required steps in the generation of vasoactive hormones such as angiotensin II. An endothelial dysfunction linked to an imbalance in the synthesis and/or the release of these various endothelial factors may explain the initiation of cardiovascular pathologies (from hypertension to atherosclerosis) or their development and perpetuation. Table of Contents: Introduction / Multiple Functions of the Endothelial Cells / Calcium Signaling in Vascular Cells and Cell-to-Cell Communications / Endothelium-Dependent Regulation of Vascular Tone / Conclusion / References

Book A Strategy for Research in Space Biology and Medicine in the New Century

Download or read book A Strategy for Research in Space Biology and Medicine in the New Century written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-09-16 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Construction of the international space station, scheduled to start in late 1998, ushers in a new era for laboratory sciences in space. This is especially true for space life sciences, which include not only the use of low gravity as an experimental parameter to study fundamental biological processes but also the study of the serious physiological changes that occur in astronauts as they remain in space for increasingly longer missions. This book addresses both of these aspects and provides a comprehensive review of ground-based and space research in eleven disciplines, ranging from bone physiology to plant biology. It also offers detailed, prioritized recommendations for research during the next decade, which are expected to have a considerable impact on the direction of NASA's research program. The volume is also a valuable reference tool for space and life scientists.
