Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mechanics of Writing In order to write English in a way that befits an educated person, one must know a certain body of rules. The term rules is here used in a wide sense, including not only general precepts, such as the dictum that in a sentence "every part should be subservient to one principal affirmation," but also those numerous particular precepts which refuse to merge themselves into convenient generalizations - for instance, those to the effect that it is bad English to say "I devote my evenings in study" for "I devote my evenings to study," that the verb except should not be used in the sense of accept, nor the noun principle in the sense of the adjective principal, and that all right should be written as two words, the first spelled with two l's. When I say that one must know these rules, I mean that one must not merely be acquainted with them, but habitually observe them. Some of these rules are known and followed by nearly every person who has grown up in an English-speaking community. Nearly every such person knows, for example, the correct meaning of several hundred English words (that is to say, he knows several hundred rules directing how these words should be used); knows how to spell certain words, fewer than those which he knows how to use; and knows that the pronoun I and such nouns as John, Mary, Smith, and Jones should be capitalized. But ignorance of many other rules - which might easily be enumerated if there were any need - is shared by children in the grammar school, boys and girls in high school, high-school graduates of recent and of long standing, college freshmen, college seniors, bachelors and masters of arts, and members of the learned professions. Book A Manual of the Mechanics of Writing

Download or read book A Manual of the Mechanics of Writing written by Raymond Woodbury Pence and published by . This book was released on 1921 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the subject of the mechanics of writing. The desirability of mechanical accuracy is seen in composition--the only effective composition is accurate composition. The outward manifestation of accuracy in composition is accuracy in the mechanics of writing. The writer who is precise about the form of his thinking is particular about the form of his composition. Mastery of the various forms of the mechanics of writing allows the writer to convey shades of meaning that can be expressed no other way.

Book Schools for All Kinds of Minds

Download or read book Schools for All Kinds of Minds written by Mary-Dean Barringer and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-03-29 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shows how schools can--and must--develop expertise in "learning variation" (understanding how different kinds of minds learn) and apply this knowledge to classroom instruction in order to address the chronic learning challenges and achievement gap faced by millions of students. Barringer shows how using what we know about learning variation with a focus on discovering learning strengths, not just deficits, can help schools create plans for success for those students who often find it elusive. The book specifically addresses how school leaders can incorporate this knowledge into instructional practice and school-level policy through various professional development strategies. Schools for All Kinds of Minds: Provides a readable synthesis of the latest research from neuroscience, cognitive science, and child and adolescent development as it relates to understanding learning and its many variations. Links this information to strategies for understanding struggling learners and adapting school practices to accommodate a wider array of learning differences in a classroom. Demonstrates how this understanding of learning variation can change the way teachers and others help students succeed in various academic and content areas and acquire necessary 21st century skills. Includes discussion questions and facilitator guidelines for staff developers and teacher education programs; downloadable forms that accompany exercises from within the book; an action plan for schools to implement the ideas found in the book; and more.

Book The English Writing System

Download or read book The English Writing System written by Vivian J Cook and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English is increasingly becoming the world's lingua franca. If we are not native speakers of one of the many varieties of English, then we may be students of English, or use English regularly for academic or business purposes. The English Language series, which is international in focus, aims to synthesize the wealth of existing linguistic research both on and in English. Each volume in the series is designed to present these findings in an accessible, enlightening and entertaining way not only to students of English linguistics but to learners and users of English across the globe. The English Writing System describes how writing is not simply ancillary to other aspects of language but vitally important to almost everything we do, from signing our wills to sending a text message. This book discusses the mechanics of the writing systems of English; the different ways people process words on a page and the mistakes they can make; how children and second language learners acquire these systems; the historical development of the language and the progress of writing technology: in short, the effectiveness of the writing systems of English. Combining an academic perspective from linguistics and psychology with insights into everyday spelling mistakes, The English Writing System will interest students and teachers of linguistics, literature, the English language, psychology and education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mechanics of Written English: A Drill in the Use of Caps and Points Thru the Rimes of Mother Goose Not one, but many, experimental schools must be established, if nation-wide, scholarly ideals and methods are to displace the cheap and absurd pyro technics at present displayed. The study of the humanities has not been discredited, for the study of English is only beginning seriously. Until elementary schools establish the study of the mother tongue in a worthy manner, how can we expect Greek and Latin to hold a place? Are we indeed a nation of confirmed imitators, as has been charged? Popular methods give a savor of truth to the accusation. We brazenly assume to make literary producers of all children, yet succeed in making few of them 1iterate, - that is, informed and accurate in the details of literacy! Our twelve year-old Aesops and La Fontaines gravely compose in classic form their ethical assignments, and we call all the world to admire. But is it certain that we dowell to develop a generation of moral prigs, who fancy that they are doing what no child - and almost no adult - can ever do?
