Book TBM Tunnelling in Jointed and Faulted Rock

Download or read book TBM Tunnelling in Jointed and Faulted Rock written by Nick R. Barton and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical guide describes the stage-by-stage development of a method for predicting the penetration rate (PR) and the advance rate (AR) for tunnel boring machines based on an expanded version of the Q-value, QTBM. The author analyzes 145 TBM tunnels that total 1,000km in length. He then develops simple formulae to estimate PR and AR from the QTBM value and to back-calculate QTBM from performance data. The book quantitatively explains actual advance rates as high as five m/hr for one day or as low as 0.005 m/hr for several months. It also covers logging methods, empirical TBM tunnel support design, and numerical verification of support.

Book Engineering in Jointed and Faulted Rock

Download or read book Engineering in Jointed and Faulted Rock written by Nick Barton and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engineering in Jointed and Faulted Rock aims to provide the background knowledge, necessary tools, and guidelines for rationalized and consistent engineering approaches to design and construction in and on jointed and faulted rock. Three avenues will be exploited to that effect: mechanics, empiricism and analysis (including numerical analysis). The book is uniquely dedicated to the theme of engineering in jointed rock to a much greater degree than earlier texts in rock mechanics and rock engineering, and there will be fundamental treatment and examples of the characterization, strength, deformability and permeability of joints and, in separate chapters, the same for rock masses. These fundamentals will be followed by their application in numerical models, for developing the engineering design for rock slopes, tunnels, bridge foundations, dam abutments, nuclear waste disposal, mine shafts and roadways. Empirical design will be validated and improved by numerical modelling where necessary. The text will be permeated with informative and illustrated case records from the authors’ total of 40 countries sphere of experience. Solutions of every-day problems will be interspersed with experiences from the longest tunnel, the widest cavern, the highest dam, the site of the largest underground power house, and the problems with the deepest TBM tunnels. This much needed text on the mechanics of jointed rock, based on extensive experiments and measurements both in the laboratory and in the field, will be indispensable for the rock engineering and rock mechanics community.

Book Fault and Joint Development

Download or read book Fault and Joint Development written by Neville J. Price and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-07-04 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fault and Joint Development in Brittle and Semi-brittle Rock deals with theories of fault and joint development in rock when they behave as brittle or semi-brittle material. The book contains three chapters, the first of which deals with some of the concepts and criteria of brittle failure along with an attempt to define limits of temperature and pressure below which rocks may behave in a brittle or semi-brittle manner. The second and third chapters discuss the application of these concepts of brittle failure and elastic theory to the problems of faulting and jointing, respectively. It is emphasized that since this book deals with theoretical aspects of structural geology it is concerned with generalizations and approximations. It must be left to the reader to decide how closely these theories approximate to any particular field data. This book is primarily intended for senior undergraduates and postgraduates in geology interested in the interpretation of geological structures. It may also be of interest to some mining and civil engineers.

Book Rock Joints

    Book Details:
  • Author : Georg Mandl
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2005-05-20
  • ISBN : 9783540245537
  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book Rock Joints written by Georg Mandl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-05-20 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joints in rocks, as distinct from tectonic faults, are fractures that form without "visible" displacement along the fracture plane. They are usually interpreted as tension fractures and analysed mechanically by employing a continuum mechanical theory of this fracture mode. "Rock Joints" deals exclusively with the mechanical genesis of joints in rocks. It is aimed at a coherent, critical and comprehensible presentation of the underlying mechanical processes of various types of joints and joint systems. In addition to tension fractures, the book extensively treats jointing from a different origin, i.e. hydraulic intrusion fractures, cleavage fractures, and shear joints. Throughout, special care is taken to elucidate and quantify the role of high fluid pressures in joint formation. Field examples illustrate formational aspects of jointing, and Mohr's stress circle used where possible to simplify the mathematics.

Book Discontinuity Analysis for Rock Engineering

Download or read book Discontinuity Analysis for Rock Engineering written by S.D. Priest and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engineers wishing to build structures on or in rock use the discipline known as rock mechanics. This discipline emerged as a subject in its own right about thirty five years ago, and has developed rapidly ever since. However, rock mechanics is still based to a large extent on analytical techniques that were originally formulated for the mechanical design of structures made from man made materials. The single most important distinction between man-made materials and the natural material rock is that rock contains fractures, of many kinds on many scales; and because the fractures - of whatever kin- represent breaks in the mechanical continuum, they are collectively termed 'discontinuities' . An understanding of the mechanical influence of these discontinuities is essential to all rock engineers. Most of the world is made of rock, and most of the rock near the surface is fractured. The fractures dominate the rock mass geometry, deformation modulus, strength, failure behaviour, permeability, and even the local magnitudes and directions of the in situ stress field. Clearly, an understanding of the presence and mechanics of the discontinuities, both singly and in the rock mass context, is therefore of paramount importance to civil, mining and petroleum engineers. Bearing this in mind, it is surprising that until now there has been no book dedicated specifically to the subject of discontinuity analysis in rock engineering.

Book Applications of X ray Computed Tomography in the Geosciences

Download or read book Applications of X ray Computed Tomography in the Geosciences written by Florias Mees and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2003 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: X-ray computed tomography (CT) is a technique that allows non-destructive imaging and quantification of internal features of objects. X-ray CT reveals differences in density and atomic composition and can therefore be used for the study of porosity, the relative distribution of contrasting solid phases and the penetration of injected solutions. In this book, various applications of X-ray CT in the geosciences are illustrated by papers covering a wide range of disciplines, including petrology, soil science, petroleum geology, geomechanics and sedimentology.

Book excerpt: This is a discount Black and white version. Some images may be unclear, please see BCCampus website for the digital version. This book was born out of a 2014 meeting of earth science educators representing most of the universities and colleges in British Columbia, and nurtured by a widely shared frustration that many students are not thriving in courses because textbooks have become too expensive for them to buy. But the real inspiration comes from a fascination for the spectacular geology of western Canada and the many decades that the author spent exploring this region along with colleagues, students, family, and friends. My goal has been to provide an accessible and comprehensive guide to the important topics of geology, richly illustrated with examples from western Canada. Although this text is intended to complement a typical first-year course in physical geology, its contents could be applied to numerous other related courses.
