The mechanical behaviour depends on the polymeric interlayer both in the intact and in the post fracture state. In the present work, the mechanical behaviour of ethylene vinyl acetate-based (EVA) and ionoplastic interlayers is investigated for the intact laminated safety glass condition. In particular, the influence of the semi-crystalline structure on the stiffness behaviour is studied with X-Ray Diffraction, Differential Scanning Calorimetry and Dynamic-Mechanical-Thermal-Analysis. The studies on the mechanical behaviour of the interlayer in the fractured laminated safety glass were carried out with polyvinyl butyral-based (PVB) interlayers. First, the temperature and frequency (time) dependent linearity limits are determined in Dynamic-Mechanical-Thermal-Analyses, second, the nonlinear viscoelastic material behaviour is investigated with tensile relaxation tests at different temperatures and strain levels.

Book excerpt: The growing demand for laminated glass in building facades and interiors is driving the development of new interlayers that extend the performance of laminated glass. In this contribution we discuss the structural performance of laminates made with such a new interlayer: SentryGlas® Plus. This new interlayer is significantly stiffer and tougher than traditional PVBs and provides enhanced structural performance in many applications. The mechanical properties of a stiff interlayer lead to benefits in three main areas: 1) glass strength; 2) stiffness and creep resistance, both before and after glass breakage; 3) temperature performance. Strength benefits are realized in applications where significant bending stresses develop during loading, such as: laminates with two sided support, balustrades (cantilevers), bolted glass and laminates supported on three sides. Enhanced post glass breakage performance expands the design envelope for glass in horizontal and sloped applications such as overhead glazing, glass floors and stairs. All of these structural properties are maintained to higher temperatures as compared to conventional PVB.

Book excerpt: Laminated glass is comprised of multiple glass plates coupled together in a sandwich construction through the use of a polymorphous interlayer that acts as a bonding agent between the glass plates. Laminated glass offers several advantages over monolithic glass including the ability to resist post fracture collapse, improved sound insulation, lower ultraviolent light trans-mission, and improved thermal insulation. Because the stiffness of the interlayer is often many orders of magnitude less than that of the glass, plane sections prior to loading do not remain plane throughout the laminate?s thickness after load is applied. The behavior of laminated glass is controlled by the stiffness of the interlayer. This behavior rules out the use of classical theoretical formulations for thin plates. In such cases, it is necessary to use specially formulated equations or finite element analyses to evaluate the performance of laminated glass. Previous attempts have been made to develop procedures to quantify the interlayer stiffness for use in laminated glass design. However, there is no widely accepted technique that can be referenced for use. It is known that the interlayer stiffness is a function of both temperature and load duration. The primary objective of this thesis is to formalize a standard procedure to estimate the in situ interlayer shear modulus through the use of nondestructive testing. Physical experiments were carried out on simply supported laminated glass beams subject to three point loading in a temperature controlled environmental testing chamber. Strains and temperatures were recorded as a function of time. These data were used in combination with results from finite element analyses to quantify the variation of the interlayer stiffness as a function of temperature and load duration for a given laminated glass beam. This procedure was applied to three common types of interlayer materials: freshly man-factured polyvinyl butyral (PVB), over a decade old PVB, and freshly manufactured SentryGlas Plus (SGP). Results from these efforts provide specific design guidance for laminated glass that incorporates these interlayer materials. Further, the procedure was applied to various data presented in open literature by previous researchers. In addition, a standardized procedure to estimate interlayer stiffness is provided for the development of additional interlayer properties as required.

Book excerpt: The present doctoral dissertation contributes to the analysis of glass panels subjected to blast load, concentrating on monolithic and laminated glass prior to glass fracture. A straightforward graphical solution for monolithic glass is presented to identify maximum deformation and maximum principal stress for small and large deformations for static and idealized blast load without software. On the basis of experimental tests, load duration factors kmod for impact and blast load design for annealed glass, heat strengthened glass and fully tempered glass are proposed. In addition, design strength values for impact and blast design based on the European and German standards are suggested. As a result, blast pressure capacity charts for monolithic fully tempered glass plates subjected to idealized blast load are presented. Moreover, design temperatures of interlayer in blast design situation based on empirical data in accordance with Eurocode are determined for vertical double glazed and triple glazed units for Germany, showing that laminated glass should not be regarded with monolithic glass approach in general.
