Book excerpt: "The utility of the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) for documenting the reading progress of English Language Learners (ELLs) was investigated. Relationships among the DIBELS measures were explored using a correlational matrix. The predictive validity of the DIBELS for determining later literacy outcomes was assessed via a series of step-wise regressions. Results suggest that the DIBELS are valid for assessing the reading progress of Spanish-speaking ELLs. Growth was seen on all measures and established DIBELS benchmarks were generally met on time. Differing from previous findings, PSF did not positively correlate with NWF for first graders, and only fall PSF significantly correlated with later ORF. PSF may not be a valid indicator of future literacy success for Spanish-speaking ELLs. Results suggest that LNF may be a better indicator and that bilingualism may facilitate phonemic awareness"--Abstract.

Book excerpt: This quantitative study has been derived from a five-year federal experimental research project entitled English and Literacy Acquisition (ELLA- R305P030032) which targeted Spanish-speaking English Language Learners (ELLs) receiving services in English immersion and bilingual program models. The purpose of this study was to investigate the predictive power of Spanish phonemic awareness in kindergarten on Spanish reading ability in first grade among Spanish-speaking ELLs. Fifty-five students from typical practice bilingual classrooms were included in this study. Phonemic awareness skills were measured using blending phonemes and segmenting words, two subtests from Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing (C-TOPP). Reading ability was measured using letter-word identification and passage comprehension, two subtests from Woodcock Language Proficiency Battery-Revised (WLPB-R). Data of phonemic awareness skills were collected at the beginning and end of kindergarten and data of reading ability were collected at the beginning and end of first grade. Correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were performed to address the research questions. The data from this study present a picture of a predictive power of phonemic awareness skills on reading comprehension in Spanish. Results from this study suggest that both skill areas of phonemic awareness in kindergarten have a moderate predictive effect on reading ability at the beginning of first grade. However, phonemic awareness skills in kindergarten did not show a statistically significant relationship to Spanish literacy at the end of first grade. Theoretical and practical implications were discussed.

Book excerpt: The increase in enrollment of Latino English language learners (ELLs) in schools within the United States highlights the importance of understanding how learning a second language influences children's development. Previous studies have indicated that learning a second language is associated with higher levels of self-regulation. Similarly, self-regulation has been associated with the acquisition of literacy skills. This study examined the correlation between self-regulation and literacy of Latino ELLs and English monolingual learners (EMLs). The sample was composed of 25 Latino ELLs and 27 EMLs. Children's self-regulation and literacy were assessed using direct assessments. Self-regulation was measured using the Head-Toes-Knees-Shoulder task and the Toy Wrap task. English literacy skills measures of phonemic awareness and letter naming fluency were assessed using two subtests from the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills. Moreover, Latino ELLs' phonemic awareness and letter naming fluency in Spanish were assessed using two subtests from the Indicadores Dinamicos del Exito en la Lectura. The results indicated that EMLs outperformed Latino ELLs in measures of self-regulation and literacy. Moreover, Latino ELLs scored higher in English literacy measures than in Spanish measures. Finally, EMLs' self-regulation scores strongly correlated with letter naming fluency, and Latino ELLs' self-regulation scores significantly correlated with literacy scores in English and Spanish.

Book excerpt: We investigated the latent factor structure of the "Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening for Kindergarteners" in Spanish ("PALS espaǫl K"). Participants included 590 Spanish-speaking, public-school kindergarteners from five states. Three theoretically-guided factor structures were measured and tested with one half of our sample using confirmatory factor analytic (CFA) methods. We then replicated the best fitting model with the second half of our sample and used multigroup CFA (MGCFA) to test for the model's configural and metric invariance. MGCFA revealed that PALS espaǫl K exhibited measurement invariance when comparing populations of boys and girls. Our results support the educational utility of PALS espaǫl K as a tool for assessing important reading constructs and informing early interventions across gender groups with Spanish-speaking students.

Dialectical classifications of the participants were determined through use of different dialect specific vocabulary word list in the Linguistic and Cultural Background Survey. This study sought to evaluate whether dialectical differences among young Spanish-English bilinguals were associated with performance on measures of phonological awareness and reading.
