Book excerpt: The authors present preliminary results of a search for several exclusive charmless hadronic B decays from electron-positron annihilation data collected by the BaBar detector near the Upsilon(4S) resonance. These include three-body decay modes with final states h"h{sup minus-plus}h" and h"h{sup minus-plus}pi°, and quasi-two-body decay modes with final states X°h and X°K{sub S}°, where h = pi or K and X° = eta-prime or omega. They find beta(B° --> rho{sup minus-plus}pi{sup "}) = (49"135{sup +6}) x 10−6 and beta(B --> eta-prime-K+) = (62"18{+-}8) x 10−6 and present upper limits for right other decays.

Book excerpt: This book highlights two essential analyses of data collected during the LHCb experiment, based on the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The first comprises the first observation and studies of matter-antimatter asymmetries in two three-body b-baryon decays, paving the way for more precise measurements of the relatively unknown decay properties of b-baryon decays. The second is an analysis of a charged B meson decay to three charged pions, where previously large matter-antimatter asymmetries were observed in a model-independent analysis. Here a model of the decay amplitude is constructed using the unitarity-conserving ‘K-matrix’ model for the scalar contributions, so as to gain an understanding of how the previously observed matter-antimatter asymmetries arise; further, the model’s construction yields the most precise and comprehensive study of this decay mode to date.

The available data sample consists of 227 million {Upsilon}(4S) {yields} B{bar B} decays collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e{sup +}e{sup -} collider at SLAC. We establish the observation of the decays B{sup 0} {yields} {pi}{sup 0}{pi}{sup 0} and B{sup 0} {yields} K{sup 0}{bar K}{sup 0} and constrain the CKM angle {alpha} with a full SU(2) isospin analysis in the B {yields} {pi}{pi} system and with a B{sup 0} {yields} {pi}{sup +}{pi}{sup -}{pi}{sup 0} time-dependent Dalitz plot analysis.

Book excerpt: We present measurements of branching fractions and charge asymmetries for charmless B-meson decays to three-body final states of charged pions and kaons. The analysis uses 81.8 fb[sup -1] of data collected at the[Upsilon](4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric B Factory. We measure the branching fractions[Beta](B[sup+][yields][pi][sup+][pi][sup -][pi][sup+])= (10.9[+-] 3.3[+-] 1.6) x 10[sup -6], [Beta](B[sup+][yields] K[sup+][pi][sup -][pi][sup+])= (59.1[+-] 3.8[+-] 3.2) x 10[sup -6], and[Beta](B[sup+][yields] K[sup+]K[sup -]K[sup+])= (29.6[+-] 2.1[+-] 1.6) x 10[sup -6], and provide 90% C.L. upper limits for other decays. We observe no charge asymmetries for these modes.

Book excerpt: We present preliminary results of searches for charged B mesons decaying into the charmless three-body final states h{sup ±} h{sup {-+}} h{sup ±}, where h = [pi] or K, using 51.5 fb−1 of data collected at the [Upsilon](4S) resonance with the BABAR detector at the SLAC PEP-II asymmetric B Factory. No assumptions are made about intermediate resonances. We measure the branching fractions [Beta](B{sup ±} 2!K{sup ±} [pi]{sup {-+}} [pi]{sup {+-}}) = (59.2 {+-} 4.7 {+-} 4.9) x 10−6 and [Beta](B{sup {+-}} 2!K{sup {+-}} K{sup {-+}} K{sup {+-}}) = (34.7 {+-} 2.0 {+-} 1.8) x 10−6, where the first error is statistical and the second error is systematic. In the same study, we do not observe significant signals for the final states B{sup {+-}} 2![pi]{sup {+-}} [pi]{sup {-+}} [pi]{sup {+-}} and B{sup {+-}} 2!K{sup {+-}} K{sup {-+}} [pi]{sup {+-}}, and therefore provide the 90% confidence upper limits [Beta](B{sup {+-}} 2![pi]{sup {+-}} [pi]{sup {-+}} [pi]{sup {+-}})

Book excerpt: We report recent measurements of rare charmless B decays performed by BaBar. The results are based on the final BaBar dataset of 424 fb−1 collected at the PEP-II B-factory based at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory. The study of rare B decays is a key ingredient to meet two of the main goals of the B-factories: assessing the validity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) picture of CP-violation by precisely measuring the elements of the Unitarity Triangle (UT), and searching for hints of New Physics (NP), or otherwise constraining NP scenarios, in processes which are suppressed in the Standard Model (SM). In loop processes, in particular, NP at some higher energy scale may manifest itself in the low energy effective theory as new couplings, such as those introduced by new very massive virtual particles in the loop. In NP searches hadronic uncertainties can play a major role, expecially for branching fraction measurements. Many theoretical uncertainties cancel in ratios of amplitudes, and most NP probes are therefore of this kind. In the following sections we report recent measurements, performed by the BaBar Collaboration, that are relevant to NP searches in charmless hadronic B decays.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis discusses different aspects of the analysis of charmless three-body B-meson decays. A study of a method of extracting the weak phase gamma using five decay modes under the assumption of flavour-SU(3) symmetry is performed. This study is carried out using BABAR-analysis results and consists in a complete proof of principle, including fully propagated uncertainties. Six possible solutions are obtained with an uncertainty below 11 degrees. It is also found that, when averaged over the entire Dalitz plane, the effect of SU(3) breaking on the analysis is only at the percent level. A second analysis presented in the manuscipt consists in the measurement of the branching fractions of the B0(s)->KShh' modes, where h(') represents a pion or a kaon. It uses data collected by the LHCb detector during run I and a part of run II, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of almost 5/fb. The B0s->KSKK decay mode is observed for the first time, with a significance of almost 7 standard deviations; the B0s->KSKK branching fraction with respect to B0->KSpipi is extracted. This analysis paves the road to the measurements of the branching fractions of the six B0(s)->KShh' decay modes with the whole run I and run II LHCb dataset.

In the search for exclusive B° →??−?°, we measure?(B° →?{sup ±}(770)?{sup {-+}}) = (28.9 ± 5.4 ± 4.3) x 10−6, together with the relative asymmetry?{sub phys} = -0.04 ± 0.18 {+-} 0.02. We also set the upper limits on B° →?°(770)?°, non-resonant B° →?+?−?°, B° → a0{sup {+-}}(→??{sup {+-}})?{sup {-+}} and B° → K°{bar K}°.
