Book Measurements and Standards in Plasma physics and Astrophysics at the National Bureau of Standards

Download or read book Measurements and Standards in Plasma physics and Astrophysics at the National Bureau of Standards written by Lewis N. Branscomb and published by . This book was released on 1960 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Bureau of Standards has embarked on a special program to unify and accelerate its research on hot gases. This work will provide data and theory presently required for the quantitative interpretation of astrophysical and geophysical observations and the measurement of properties of plasmas in the laboratory. The data, measurement techniques, and theoretical methods of analysis draw on activities in the fields on atomic and molecular physics, statistical mechanics and thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and theoretical astrophysics and geophysics. Both the Washington and Boulder laboratories of the NBS are participating. This note describes the technical objectives of the program and includes in appendices a selected list of papers published at the NBS for the period 1955-1959 and a partial list of Bureau participants.

Download or read book Measurements and Standards in Plasma Physics and Astrophysics at the National Bureau of Standards Classic Reprint written by Lewis M. Branscomb and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Measurements and Standards in Plasma-Physics and Astrophysics at the National Bureau of Standards To relate the many fields of specialization, a more basic approach is needed, which in essence creates a single broad problem and treats this problem from a systematic and quantitative point of view. The long-range objective is therefore the solution of the many-body problem of modern atomic physics in its full generality. Required to accomplish this goal are precision measurements and calculations of the many atomic and collective parameters which govern the behavior of the hot plasma or gas and which provide the diagnostic tools for a description of the state of the gas. Book Measurement Techniques in Space Plasmas

Download or read book Measurement Techniques in Space Plasmas written by Robert F. Pfaff and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1998-02-04 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 102. Space plasma measurements are conducted in a hostile, remote environment. The art and science of measurements gathered in space depend therefore on unique instrument designs and fabrication methods to an extent perhaps unprecedented in experimental physics. In-situ measurement of space plasmas constitutes an expensive, unforgiving, and highly visible form of scientific endeavor.

Book An Introduction to Plasma Astrophysics and Magnetohydrodynamics

Download or read book An Introduction to Plasma Astrophysics and Magnetohydrodynamics written by M. Goossens and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the visible matter in the universe exists in the plasma state. Plasmas are of major importance for space physics, solar physics, and astrophysics. On Earth they are essential for magnetic controlled thermonuclear fusion. This textbook collects lecture notes from a one-semester course taught at the K.U. Leuven to advanced undergraduate students in applied mathematics and physics. A particular strength of this book is that it provides a low threshold introduction to plasmas with an emphasis on first principles and fundamental concepts and properties. The discussion of plasma models is to a large extent limited to Magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) with its merits and limitations clearly explained. MHD provides the students on their first encounter with plasmas, with a powerful plasma model that they can link to familiar classic fluid dynamics. The solar wind is studied as an example of hydrodynamics and MHD at work in solar physics and astrophysics.
