Book excerpt: This dissertation focuses on the study of novel high-gain free-electron laser (FEL) operation schemes with external seed lasers. The technique of manipulating the phase space of the electron beam, which is widely used in novel seeded FEL schemes, is systematically studied. Several novel FEL schemes are proposed for the generation of intense coherent FEL pulses with short wavelength, sub-femtosecond pulse length or multiple carrier frequency properties, which meet the needs of FEL users. Results of experiments are described for the recently proposed FEL schemes such as echo-enabled harmonic generation and cascaded high-gain harmonic generation. New photon/electron beam diagnostic methods are also developed for these experiments and future high-gain FEL facilities.

S. within the framework of the Academic Training Program at DESY, we have aimed at presenting the theory of the low-gainandthehigh-gainFELinaclearandconcisemathematicallanguage. Particular emphasis is put on explaining and justifying the assumptions and approximations that are needed to obtain the di?erential equations descr- ing the FEL dynamics. Although we have tried our best to be “simple”, the mathematical derivations are certainly not always as simple as one would like them to be. However, we are not aware of any easier approach to the FEL theory. Some of the more involved calculations are put into the appendices.

The HGHG approach utilizes a laser-seeded FEL to produce amplified, longitudinally coherent, Fourier-transform- limited output at a harmonic of the seed laser. In the experiment performed at the Accelerator Test Facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory, a seed CO2 laser at a wavelength of 1O.6mm produced saturated, amplified FEL output at the second-harmonic wavelength, 5.3mm. The HGHG FEL was demonstrated successfully. The duration of the output pulse was measured using a second-harmonic intensity autocorrelator, and the coherence length was measured using an interferometer. We also measured the energy distribution of the electron beam after ft exited the second undulatory, observing behavior consistent with that is expected at saturation. The intensity of the harmonic components of the output at 2.65 mm and 1.77 mm were determined relative to that of the 5.3-mm fundamental. Finally, using a corrector magnet upstream of the radiator, steering effects on the trajectories of the electron and light beams were studied.

A new acceleration scheme such as Laser Plasma Accelerator (LPA) is now capable of producing an accelerating gradient of few GeV/cm far superior to that of conventional RF linacs. This PhD work has been conducted in the framework of R&D programs of the LUNEX5 (free electron Laser Using a New accelerator for the Exploitation of X-ray radiation of 5th generation) project of advanced and compact Free Electron laser demonstrator with pilot user applications. It comprises a 400 MeV superconducting linac for studies of advanced FEL schemes, high repetition rate operation (10 kHz), multi-FEL lines, a Laser Wake Field Accelerator (LWFA) for its qualification by a FEL application. The FEL lines comports enables advanced seeding in the 40-4 nm spectral range using high gain harmonic generation (HGHG) and echo-enabled harmonic generation (EEHG) with compact short period high field cryogenic undulators. The study of compact devices suitable for compact FEL applications is thus examined. One first aspect concerns the reduction of the Free Electron Laser gain medium (electrons in undulator) where shortening of the period is on the expense of the magnetic field leading to an intensity reduction at high harmonics. Compact cryogenic permanent magnet based undulators (CPMUs), where the magnet performance is increased at cryogenic temperature making them suitable for compact applications, are studied. Three CPMUs of period 18 mm have been built: two are installed at SOLEIL storage ring and one at COXINEL experiment. A second part of the work is developed in the frame of the R&D programs is the COXINEL experiment with an aim at demonstrating FEL amplification using an LPA source. The line enables to manipulate the properties of the produced electron beams (as energy spread, divergence, induced dispersion due) before being used for light source applications. The electron beam generated is highly divergent and requires a good handling at an early stage with strong quadrupoles, to be installed immediately after the electron generation source. Hence, the development of the so-called QUAPEVAs, innovative permanent magnet quadrupoles with high tunable gradient, is presented. The QUAPEVAs are optimized with RADIA code and characterized with three magnetic measurements. High tunable gradient is achieved while maintaining a rather good magnetic center excursion that allowed for beam pointing alignment compensation at COXINEL, where the beam is well-focused with zero dispersion at any location along the line. The QUAPEVAs constitute original systems in the landscape of variable high gradient quadrupoles developed so far. A third part of the work concerns the observation of tunable monochromatic undulator radiation on the COXINEL line. The electron beam of energy of 170 MeV is transported and focused in a 2-m long CPMU with a period of 18 mm emitting radiation light at 200 nm. The spectral flux is characterized using a UV spectrometer and the angular flux is captured by a CCD camera. The wavelength is tuned with the undulator gap variation. The spatio-spectral moon shape type pattern of the undulator radiation provided an insight on the electron beam quality and its transport enabling the estimation of the electron beam parameters such as energy spread and divergence. The final aspect of the work is related to the comparison between the echo and high gain harmonic generation, in the frame of my participation to an experiment carried out at FERMI@ELETTRA. At FERMI, we have demonstrated a high gain lasing using EEHG at a wavelength of 5.9 nm where it showed a narrower spectra and better reproducibility compared to a two-stage HGHG. This PhD work constitutes a step forward towards advanced compact Free Electron Lasers.

Book excerpt: A formalism based on the Vlasov-Maxwell system has been developed that provides a fully kinetic description of a free-electron laser (FEL) operating in the high gain regime. The analysis allows for guiding of the optical beam through the gain process and guiding of the electron beam by the weak focusing provided by realistic wiggler gradients. Thus, betatron oscillations and emittance are naturally included. Additionally, intrinsic energy spread as well as energy spread due to space charge effects is included. The analysis predicts a novel electron beam equilibrium flow in which the effect of wiggler gradients tends to cancel that due to space charge, leading to a flow with reduced axial velocity spread. Since the FEL mechanism is sensitive to the axial velocity spread on the beam, this special flow appears to be useful in enhancing FEL gain. This and other issues related to FEL operation are discussed in this paper. It is shown that the scaled thermal velocity S = v(th) /(V(b) - V(ph)) is a useful measure of beam quality in the context of FELs. Here, v(th) is the thermal velocity on the beam, v(b) is the beam velocity and v(ph) is the phase velocity of the ponderomotive wave. The scaled thermal velocity depends on beam emittance, energy spread and electron density and is a useful indicator of beam quality since it provides a measure of the thermal spread as observed in the phase velocity frame. Analogies between the high gain FEL and plasma two-stream instability are discussed.

Book excerpt: In recent years, the free-electron laser (FEL) has demonstrated its value as a tunable source of bright, coherent radiation with photon energies up to the X-ray region. For such short radiation wavelengths, three-dimensional (3D) effects (due to diffraction, emittance and focusing) become significant and must be taken into consideration. In this work, we present a systematic, fully 3D theoretical formalism applicable to a range of concepts for compact, high-gain FELs. These include novel schemes involving the use of transverse gradient (TGU) or laser undulators. Our approach utilizes either a standard eigenmode analysis for constant-parameter systems or a non-eigenmode expansion technique in terms of orthogonal transverse modes for cases where the parameters of the electron beam and/or the undulator vary along the longitudinal direction. The results we obtain fully characterize the system (electron beam and radiation) in the linear regime of the interaction and are shown to be in excellent agreement with simulation. Moreover, the formalism developed here can be used in comprehensive, theory-based optimization studies, with significant applications in FEL design.
