The ?rst PPAM conference was held in 1994 and was organized by the Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science of the Cz ̧ estochowa University of Technology in its hometown. The main idea behind the event was to provide a forum for researchers involved in applied and computational mathematics and parallel computing to exchange ideas in a relaxed atmosphere. Conference organizers hoped that this arrangement would result in cross-pollination and lead to successful research collaborations. In - dition, they hoped that the initially mostly Polish conference would grow into an international event. The fact that these assumptions were correct was proven by the growth of the event. While the ?rst conference consisted of 41 presen- tions, the conference reached 150 participants in Na l ̧ ecz ́ ow in 2001. In this way the PPAM conference has become one of the premiere Polish conferences, and de?nitely the most important one in the area of parallel/distributed computing andappliedmathematics. This year’s meeting gathered almost 200 participants from 32 countries. A strict refereeing process resulted in the acceptance of approximately 150 cont- buted presentations, while the rejection rate was approximately 33%.

A bespoke “cyber” part of the system may then be designed from scratch. Optimal Mobile Sensing and Actuation Strategies in Cyber-physical Systems focuses on distributed-parameter systems the dynamics of which can be modelled with partial differential equations. These are very challenging to observe, their states and inputs being distributed throughout a spatial domain. Consequently, systematic approaches to the optimization of sensor location have to be devised for parameter estimation. The text begins by reviewing the field of cyber-physical systems and introducing background notions of distributed parameter systems and optimal observation theory. New research problems are then defined within this framework. Two important problems considered are optimal mobile sensor trajectory planning and the accuracy effects and allocation of remote sensors. These are followed up with a solution to the problem of optimal robust estimation. Actuation policies are then introduced into the framework with the purpose of improving estimation and optimizing the trajectories of both sensors and actuators simultaneously. The large number of illustrations within the text will assist the reader to visualize the application of the methods proposed. A group of similar examples are used throughout the book to help the reader assimilate the material more easily. The monograph concentrates on the use of methods for which a cyber-physical-systems infrastructure is required. The methods are computationally heavy and require mobile sensors and actuators with communications abilities. Application examples cover fields from environmental science to national security so that readers are encouraged to link the ideas of cyber-physical systems with their own research.

Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to provide methods and algorithms for the optimization of input signals so as to estimate parameters in systems described by PDE’s as accurate as possible under given constraints. The optimality conditions have their background in the optimal experiment design theory for regression functions and in simple but useful results on the dependence of eigenvalues of partial differential operators on their parameters. Examples are provided that reveal sometimes intriguing geometry of spatiotemporal input signals and responses to them. An introduction to optimal experimental design for parameter estimation of regression functions is provided. The emphasis is on functions having a tensor product (Kronecker) structure that is compatible with eigenfunctions of many partial differential operators. New optimality conditions in the time domain and computational algorithms are derived for D-optimal input signals when parameters of ordinary differential equations are estimated. They are used as building blocks for constructing D-optimal spatio-temporal inputs for systems described by linear partial differential equations of the parabolic and hyperbolic types with constant parameters. Optimality conditions for spatially distributed signals are also obtained for equations of elliptic type in those cases where their eigenfunctions do not depend on unknown constant parameters. These conditions and the resulting algorithms are interesting in their own right and, moreover, they are second building blocks for optimality of spatio-temporal signals. A discussion of the generalizability and possible applications of the results obtained is presented.

The next four meetings were in 1990 (St Kyrik monastery, Bulgaria), 1992 (Petrodvorets, St Petersburg, Russia), 1995 (Spetses, Greece) and 1998 (Marseilles, France). Initially the main purpose of these workshops was to bring together leading scientists from 'Eastern' and 'Western' Europe for the exchange of ideas in theoretical and applied statistics, with special emphasis on experimental design. Now that the sep aration between East and West is much less rigid, this exchange has, in principle, become much easier. However, it is still important to provide opportunities for this interaction. MODA meetings are celebrated for their friendly atmosphere. Indeed, dis cussions between young and senior scientists at these meetings have resulted in several fruitful long-term collaborations. This intellectually stimulating atmosphere is achieved by limiting the number of participants to around eighty, by the choice of a location in which communal living is encour aged and, of course, through the careful scientific direction provided by the Programme Committee. It is a tradition of these meetings to provide low cost accommodation, low fees and financial support for the travel of young and Eastern participants. This is only possible through the help of sponsors and outside financial support was again important for the success of the meeting.

The above problems are having not only important practical applications. They are also inspiring scienti fic research in the field of discrete applied mathematics. Among them are controlled enumeration methods, subgradient approach, genetic programming, multicriteria optimization, neural nets etc. Along with its tradition of promoting and supporting new im portant fields of research in mechanics and its application, General Assembly of IUTAM decided in 1990 to support the Sumposium. It is worthy to note that this is the second IUTAM Symposium on structural optimization, organized in Poland. The first one was held in Warsaw twenty years ago and was organized by Profe ssors Sawczuk and Mroz. It was devoted mostly to problems with continuous design variables. The Symposium which gathered 40 participants from 12 coun tries was sponsored by several institutions listed below. However support by IUTAM should be specially appreciated. It helped se veral scientists to contribute to the Symposium which other way wouldn't attend the meeting.

This high-level paradigm for the development and application of sensor device networks provides a strong scientific computing foundation, as well as the basis for robust software engineering practice. The three major components of this approach include (1) models of phenomena to be monitored, (2) models of sensors and actuators, and (3) models of the sensor network computation. We propose guiding principles to identify the state or structure of the phenomenon being sensed, or of the sensor network itself. This is called computational modeling. These methods are then incorporated into the operational system of the sensor network and adapted to system performance requirements to produce a mapping of the computation onto the system architecture. This is called real-time computational mapping and allows modification of system parameters according to real-time performance measures. This book deals with the development of a mathematical and modular software development framework to achieve computational sensor networks.
