Book Inclusive and Differential Measurements of the T T bar Charge Asymmetry in Proton proton Collisions at Sqrt s

Download or read book Inclusive and Differential Measurements of the T T bar Charge Asymmetry in Proton proton Collisions at Sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The t t-bar charge asymmetry is measured in events containing a charged lepton (electron or muon) and at least four jets, one of which is identified as originating from b-quark hadronization. The analyzed dataset corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.0 inverse femtobarns collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. An inclusive and three differential measurements of the t t-bar charge asymmetry as a function of rapidity, transverse momentum, and invariant mass of the t t-bar system are presented. The measured inclusive t t-bar charge asymmetry is A(C) = 0.004 +/- 0.010 (stat.) +/- 0.011 (syst.). This result and the three differential measurements are consistent with zero asymmetry as well as with the predictions of the standard model.

Book A Measurement of W Boson Pair Production in Pp Collisions at Sqrt s

Download or read book A Measurement of W Boson Pair Production in Pp Collisions at Sqrt s written by Philip Sommer and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zusammenfassung: In this thesis, measurements of the W boson pair production cross section in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV are presented. A dataset corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 22.3 /fb recorded by the ATLAS experiment in the year 2012 is used. The W bosons are identified by their decay products of exactly two leptons with opposite electrical charge, electrons or muons, and missing transverse momentum induced by their corresponding neutrinos. First, a measurement restricted to final states without hadronic jets is presented and differential fiducial cross sections, total cross sections and limits on anomalous triple gauge boson couplings are obtained. A second measurement of the fiducial cross section in association with exactly one hadronic jet is presented. The ratio of fiducial cross sections for different jet multiplicities is reported and the combined fiducial cross section is extrapolated to the total phase space.

Book A Study of W Boson Decay Charge Asymmetry Using Hadronic Tau Decays in Proton Anti proton Collisions at square Root s

Download or read book A Study of W Boson Decay Charge Asymmetry Using Hadronic Tau Decays in Proton Anti proton Collisions at square Root s written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents a measurement of the tau charge asymmetry in events where the taus are produced by W decays. This charge asymmetry appears as different rapidity distributions for positive and negative taus. Two competing effects generate tau charge asymmetry. The production mechanism for the W gauge boson generates a charge asymmetry which is a function of the ratio of parton distribution functions, d(x)=u(x), measured at x (almost equal to) M{sub W}/(square root)s. This is the dominant effect for tau charge asymmetry at small rapidity. At higher rapidity, however, the competing charge asymmetry from parity violation in W decay to taus becomes dominant. This tau asymmetry measurement is consistent with the Standard Model with a x2 per degree of freedom equal to 2.5 for 4 degrees of freedom when the asymmetry measurement is folded about y = 0, taking advantage of the CP symmetry of the underlying physics, and 8.9 for 8 degrees of freedom when it is not. This measurement introduces some methods and variables of interest to future analyses using hadronic decay modes of taus. This work was done using the CDF detector in {bar p}p collisions at (square root) = 1.8 TeV at Fermilab's Tevatron accelerator.

Book Search for New Heavy Charged Bosons and Measurement of High Mass Drell Yan Production in Proton Proton Collisions

Download or read book Search for New Heavy Charged Bosons and Measurement of High Mass Drell Yan Production in Proton Proton Collisions written by Markus Zinser and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents two analyses, the first of which involves the search for a new heavy charged gauge boson, a so-called W' boson. This new gauge boson is predicted by some theories extending the Standard Model gauge group to solve some of its conceptual problems. Decays of the W' boson in final states with a lepton (l± = e± , μ±) and the corresponding (anti-)neutrino are considered. Data collected by the ATLAS experiment in 2015 at a center of mass energy of √s =13 TeV is used for the analysis. In turn, the second analysis presents a measurement of the double-differential cross section of the process pp->Z/gamma^* + X -> l^+l^- + X, including a gamma gamma induced contribution, at a center of mass energy of sqrt{s} = 8 TeV. The measurement is performed in an invariant mass region of 116 GeV to 1500 GeV as a function of invariant mass and absolute rapidity of the l^+l^-- pair, and as a function of invariant mass and pseudorapidity separation of the l^+l^-- pair. The data analyzed was recorded by the ATLAS experiment in 2012 and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 20.3/fb. It is expected that the measured cross sections are sensitive to the PDFs at very high values of the Bjorken-x scaling variable, and to the photon structure of the proton.

Download or read book Measurement of the W Boson Production Charge Asymmetry in Pp u00AF u2192 W X u2192 e X Events at S written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a measurement of the W boson production charge asymmetry in p$ar{p}$→W+X→e?+X events at a center of mass energy of 1.96 TeV, using 9.7 fb-1 of integrated luminosity collected with the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The neutrino longitudinal momentum is determined by using a neutrino weighting method, and the asymmetry is measured as a function of the W boson rapidity. The measurement extends over wider electron pseudorapidity region than previous results and is the most precise to date, allowing for precise determination of proton parton distribution functions in global fits.

Book W Boson Cross Sections and Single Spin Asymmetries in Polarized Proton proton Collisions at square Root Of S

This book was released on 2012 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding the structure of the proton is an ongoing effort in the particle physics community. Existing in the region of nonperturbative QCD, the various models for proton structure must be informed and constrained by experimental data. In 2009, the STAR experiment at Brookhaven National Lab recorded over 12 pb-1 of data from polarized p+p collisions at 500 GeV center-of-mass energy provided by the RHIC accelerator. This has offered a first look at the spin-dependent production of W+(-) bosons, and hence at the spin-flavor structure of the proton, where the main production mode is through d+u (u+d) annihilation. Using STAR's large Time Projection Chamber and its wide-acceptance electromagnetic calorimeters, it is possible to identify the e+ + v (e- + v) decay mode of the W bosons produced. This thesis presents the first STAR measurement of charge-separated W production, both the pseudorapidity-dependent ratio and the longitudinal single-spin asymmetry. These results show good agreement with theoretical expectations, validating the methods used and paving the way for the analysis of larger datasets that will be available soon. In the near future the range of this measurement will be augmented with the Forward GEM Tracker. A discussion of the design and implementation of this upgrade is also included, along with projections for its impact.

Book Measurements of the t bar t Charge Asymmetry Using the Dilepton Decay Channel in Pp Collisions at sqrt s

Download or read book Measurements of the t bar t Charge Asymmetry Using the Dilepton Decay Channel in Pp Collisions at sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The t t-bar charge asymmetry in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 7 TeV is measured using the dilepton decay channel (ee, e mu, or mu mu). The data correspond to a total integrated luminosity of 5.0 inverse femtobarns, collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The t t-bar and lepton charge asymmetries, defined as the differences in absolute values of the rapidities between the reconstructed top quarks and antiquarks and of the pseudorapidities between the positive and negative leptons, respectively, are measured to be Ac = -0.010 +/- 0.017 (stat.) +/- 0.008 (syst.) and Aclep = 0.009 +/- 0.010 (stat.) +/- 0.006 (syst). The lepton charge asymmetry is also measured as a function of the invariant mass, rapidity, and transverse momentum of the t t-bar system. All measurements are consistent with the expectations of the standard model.
