Book Search for Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay of Cd 116 with the NEMO 3 Experiment

Download or read book Search for Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay of Cd 116 with the NEMO 3 Experiment written by Raymond Benton Pahlka and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation describes the approach taken in measuring two neutrino double beta decay of Cd-116 to the ground state of Sn-116 and in searching for the effective Majorana neutrino mass by placing a lower limit on the half-life for neutrinoless double beta decay of Cd-116 using the powerful technique of a combined tracking chamber and calorimeter with the NEMO-3 detector. The description of the detector, its natural background contamination, and the tools used to perform the analysis are discussed. The single electron channel was used to identify source foil contamination from [beta]-emitters and the electron-gamma channel was used to confirm the previous measurements of Tl-208 and Bi-214 contaminations in the source foil. Using these backgrounds, the two neutrino double beta decay half-life of Cd-116 was measured for the single states dominance hypothesis and the higher states dominance hypothesis. The final data set was defined to be data from Phrase One and Phase Two for the medium and low activity regions. Using 1471 days of data, the values of the half-life for the single data dominance hypothesis and the higher states dominance hypothesis were found.

Book Seventy Years of Double Beta Decay

Download or read book Seventy Years of Double Beta Decay written by Hans Volker Klapdor-Kleingrothaus and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 1559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last 20 years the disciplines of particle physics, astrophysics, nuclear physics and cosmology have grown together in an unprecedented way. A brilliant example is nuclear double beta decay, an extremely rare radioactive decay mode, which is one of the most exciting and important fields of research in particle physics at present and the flagship of non-accelerator particle physics. While already discussed in the 1930s, only in the 1980s was it understood that neutrinoless double beta decay can yield information on the Majorana mass of the neutrino, which has an impact on the structure of space-time. Today, double beta decay is indispensable for solving the problem of the neutrino mass spectrum and the structure of the neutrino mass matrix. The potential of double beta decay has also been extended such that it is now one of the most promising tools for probing beyond-the-standard-model particle physics, and gives access to energy scales beyond the potential of future accelerators. This book presents the breathtaking manner in which achievements in particle physics have been made from a nuclear physics process. Consisting of a 150-page highly factual overview of the field of double beta decay and a 1200-page collection of the most important original articles, the book outlines the development of double beta decay research theoretical and experimental from its humble beginnings until its most recent achievements, with its revolutionary consequences for the theory of particle physics. It further presents an outlook on the exciting future of the field.

Book Event Classification in Liquid Scintillator Using PMT Hit Patterns

Download or read book Event Classification in Liquid Scintillator Using PMT Hit Patterns written by Jack Dunger and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-13 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The search for neutrinoless double beta decay is one of the highest priority areas in particle physics today; it could provide insights to the nature of neutrino masses (currently not explained by the Standard Model) as well as how the universe survived its early stages. One promising experimental approach involves the use of large volumes of isotope-loaded liquid scintillator, but new techniques for background identification and suppression must be developed in order to reach the required sensitivity levels and clearly distinguish the signal. The results from this thesis constitute a significant advance in this area, laying the groundwork for several highly effective and novel approaches based on a detailed evaluation of state-of-the-art detector characteristics. This well written thesis includes a particularly clear and comprehensive description of the theoretical motivations as well as impressively demonstrating the effective use of diverse statistical techniques. The professionally constructed signal extraction framework contains clever algorithmic solutions to efficient error propagation in multi-dimensional space. In general, the techniques developed in this work will have a notable impact on the field.

Book Introduction to the Physics of Massive and Mixed Neutrinos

Download or read book Introduction to the Physics of Massive and Mixed Neutrinos written by Samoil Bilenky and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-02 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Small neutrino masses are the first signs of new physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. Since the first edition of this textbook appeared in 2010, the Nobel Prize has been awarded "for the discovery of neutrino oscillations, which shows that neutrinos have mass". The measurement of the small neutrino mixing angle $\theta_{13}$ in 2012, launched the precision stage of the investigation of neutrino oscillations. This measurement now allows such fundamental problems as the three-neutrino mass spectrum - is it normal or inverted? – and the $CP$ violation in the lepton sector to be tackled. In order to understand the origin of small neutrino masses, it remains crucial to reveal the nature of neutrinos with definite masses: are they Dirac neutrinos possessing a conserved lepton number, which distinguishes neutrinos and antineutrinos, or are they Majorana neutrinos with identical neutrinos and antineutrinos? Experiments searching for the neutrinoless double beta decay are presently under way to answer this fundamental question. The second edition of this book comprehensively discusses all these important recent developments. Based on numerous lectures given by the author, a pioneer of modern neutrino physics (recipient of the Bruno Pontecorvo Prize 2002), at different institutions and schools, it offers a gentle yet detailed introduction to the physics of massive and mixed neutrinos that prepares graduate students and young researchers entering the field for the exciting years ahead in neutrino physics.

Book Measurement of the Two neutrino Double beta Decay Half life of Te with the CUORE 0 Experiment

Download or read book Measurement of the Two neutrino Double beta Decay Half life of Te with the CUORE 0 Experiment written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, we report on the measurement of the two-neutrino double-beta decay half-life of 130Te with the CUORE-0 detector. From an exposure of 33.4 kg year of TeO2, the half-life is determined to be T2[nu]1/2 = [8.2 ± 0.2 (stat.) ± 0.6 (syst.)] × 1020 year. This result is obtained after a detailed reconstruction of the sources responsible for the CUORE-0 counting rate, with a specific study of those contributing to the 130Te neutrinoless double-beta decay region of interest.

Book Sixty Years of Double Beta Decay

Download or read book Sixty Years of Double Beta Decay written by H. V. Klapdor-Kleingrothaus and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001 with total page 1324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear double beta decay is one of the most promising tools for probing beyond-the-standard-model physics on beyond-accelerator energy scales. It is already now probing the TeV scale, on which new physics should manifest itself according to theoretical expectations. Only in the early 1980s was it known that double beta decay yields information on the Majorana mass of the exchanged neutrino. At present, the sharpest bound for the electron neutrino mass arises from this process. It is only in the last 10 years that the much more far-reaching potential of double beta decay has been discovered. Today, the potential of double beta decay includes a broad range of topics that are equally relevant to particle physics and astrophysics, such as masses of heavy neutrinos, of sneutrinos, as SUSY models, compositeness, leptoquarks, left-right symmetric models, and tests of Lorentz symmetry and equivalence principle in the neutrino sector. Double beta decay has become indispensable nowadays for solving the problem of the neutrino mass spectrum and the structure of the neutrino mass matrix OCo together with present and future solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillation experiments. Some future double beta experiments (like GENIUS) will be capable to be simultaneously neutrino observatories for double beta decay and low-energy solar neutrinos, and observatories for cold dark matter of ultimate sensitivity. Book Model of the Response Function of CUORE Bolometers

Download or read book Model of the Response Function of CUORE Bolometers written by Marco Vignati and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-04-29 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large mass bolometers are used in particle physics experiments to search for rare processes, like neutrinoless double beta decay and dark matter interactions. In the next years the CUORE experiment (a 1 Ton detector composed by 1000 crystals of TeO2 operated as bolometers in a large cryostat at 10mK) will be the particle physics experiment with the highest chance of discovering the Majorana neutrino, a long standing and yet fundamental question of particle physics. The study presented in this book was performed on the bolometers of the CUORE experiment. The response function of these detectors is not linear in the energy range of interest, and it changes with the operating temperature, worsening the performances. The nonlinearity appeared to be dominated by the thermistor and the biasing circuit used to read the bolometer, and was modeled using few measurable parameters. A method to obtain a linear response is the result of this work. It allows a great improvement of the detector operation and data analysis. With a foreword by Fernando Ferroni.

Book Search for Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay of 116Cd and 82Se and Calorimeter Simulations for the SuperNEMO Experiment

Download or read book Search for Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay of 116Cd and 82Se and Calorimeter Simulations for the SuperNEMO Experiment written by Zachary John Liptak and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the NEMO-3 detector, 410.4 g of 116Cd with a total exposure of 1.65 kg· y and 932 g of 82Se with a total exposure of 3.75 kg· y were used to measure the half-life of two-neutrino double beta decay (2[nu][beta][beta]) to the ground states of 116Sn and 82Kr and to place a lower limit on the neutrinoless double becay decay (0[nu][beta][beta]) to the same ground states. Under the single-states dominance hypothesis, the 2[nu][beta][beta] half-lives are found to be T 1/2(116Cd) = (2.90 ± 0.03(stat) ± 0.15(syst)×1019 yr and T 1/2(82Se) = [10.62±0.11(stat)±0.56(syst)]×1019 yr. 0[nu][beta][beta] is excluded to 90% confidence level at T 1/2 ≥ 1.12 × 1023 yr for 116Cd and T 1/2 ≥ 3.90 × 1023 yr for 82Se. These half-lives correspond to effective Majorana neutrino masses of m ≤ (4.33 - 5.54) eV and m ≤ (2.28 - 2.82) eV, respectively, in the light Majorana exchange mechanism.

Book Measurement of the double beta decay half life of 100Mo to the 0 1excited state and 48Ca to the ground state in the NEMO 3 experiment

Download or read book Measurement of the double beta decay half life of 100Mo to the 0 1excited state and 48Ca to the ground state in the NEMO 3 experiment written by Shiva King and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NEMO 3 is a double beta decay experiment situated in the Fréjus tunnel which runs between France and Italy. If neutrinoless double beta decay is observed it will prove the neutrino is a Majorana particle and may potentially become the most sensitive method of measuring the absolute neutrino mass. It would also have huge implications for not only particle physics, but also nuclear physics, astrophysics and cosmology. The study of two-neutrino double beta decay gives us a better understanding of the nuclear models used to calculate the nuclear matrix elements, which are so important in extracting new physics parameters from the neutrinoless double beta decay search. The purpose of this thesis is primarily to report on the measurement of the two neutrino double beta decay of two isotopes, {100}Mo and {48}Ca, currently inside the NEMO 3 detector. The double decay of {100}Mo to the O {+}_{1} excited state of {100}Ru is studied as well as the double beta decay of {48}Ca to the ground state of {48}Ti. The two neutrino half-life measurement for {100}Mo is found to be T {2\upsilon}_{1/2}(O +\rightarrow O {+}_1}) = 5.70 {+1.15}_{-0.82} (stat) \pm 0.77 (syst.) \times 10 {20} yrs. This being the first result where all the final states have been measured. For {48}Ca, the two neutrino half-life is T {2\upsilon}_{1/2}(g.s. \rightarrow g.s.) = 4.44 {+0.49}_{-0.40}(stat.) \pm 0.29 (syst.) \times 10 {19} yrs, which is the worlds most accurate measurement of this decay process. A limit on the neutrinoless double beta decay of {48}Ca has also been obtained.
