Book excerpt: Experiment E949 at Brookhaven National Laboratory studied the rare decay K-->pi nu{ovr {nu}} and other processes with an exposure of 1.77 x 1012 k+'s. The data were analyzed using a blind analysis technique yielding one candidate event with an estimated background of 0.30 ± 0.03 events. Combining this result with the observation of two candidate events by the predecessor experiment E787 gave the branching ratio B(K+-->pi+ nu{ovr {nu}}) = (1.47{sub -0.89}{sup +1.30}) x 10−1°, consistent with the standard model prediction of (0.74 ± 0.20) x 10−1°. This is a more detailed report of results previously published [V.V. Anisimovsky et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 031801 (2004)].

The first uses D[sup 0] [yields] [bar K] [sup [minus]][mu][sup +][nu] for normalization, and yields the result B(D[sup +] [yields] [bar K]*[sup 0] [mu][sup +][nu] = (3.25 [plus minus] 0.71 [plus minus] 0.75)%. From this method we also obtain the direct measurement [Gamma](D[sup +] [yields][bar K]*[sup 0][mu][sup +] [nu]/[Gamma](D[sup 0] [yields] K[sup [minus]] [mu][sup +] [nu]) = 0.43 [plus minus] 0.09 [plus minus] 0.09. The second method uses the mode D[sup +] [yields] K[sup [minus]][pi][sup +] [pi][sup +] for normalization and yields B(D[sup +] [yields] [bar K]*[sup 0] [mu][sup +][nu]) = 4.18 [plus minus] 0.66 [plus minus]0.96)%. Combining the results of the two methods yields B(D[sup +] [yields] [bar K]*[sup 0][mu][sup +][nu]) = 3.57 [plus minus] 0.96)%.

With data collected by the CLEO II detector at the Cornell Electron Storage Ring, we have determined Br(D[sup 0][yields] K[sup -][pi][sup+])=[3.81[+-] 0.15(stat.)[+-] 0.16(syst.)]%.

The determination is based on 45,500 events passing final data cuts. The resulting ratio is .3329[+-] .0047 (statistical)[+-] .0010 (systematic).

Book excerpt: The experimental program for the study of the rare kaon decays, K+[pi][nu][bar[nu]] is summarized. A review of recent results is provided along with a discussion of prospects for the future of this program. The primary focus of the world-wide kaon program is the two golden modes: K[sup+][yields][pi][sup+][nu][bar[nu]] and K[sub L][sup o][yields][pi][sup o][nu][bar[nu]]. The first step in an ambitious program to precisely measure both branching ratios has been successfully completed with the observation of two K[sup+][yields][pi][sup+][nu][bar[nu]] events by E787. The E949 experiment is poised to reach an order of magnitude further in sensitivity and to observe[approx]10 Standard Model events, and the CKM experiment should observe[approx]100 SM events by the end of this decade. Limits on the neutral analog K[sub L][sup o][yields][pi][sup o][nu][bar[nu]] have been set by KTeV and within the next couple of years will be pushed by E391a. Measurements of the branching ratio should be made within the next 10 years by KOPIO, with a goal of[approx]50 events, and at the JHF, with a goal of up to 1000 events.
