Book excerpt: The authors present a study of the decays B[sup 0][yields] D[sub s][sup (*)+] D*[sup -], using 20.8 fb[sup -1] of e[sup+]e[sup -] annihilation data recorded with the BABAR detector. The analysis is conducted with a partial reconstruction technique, in which only the D[sub s][sup (*)+] and the soft pion from the D*[sup -] decay are reconstructed. They measure the branching fractions[Beta](B[sup 0][yields] D[sub s][sup (*)+] D*[sup -])= (1.03[+-] 0.14[+-] 0.13[+-] 0.26)% and[Beta](B[sup 0][yields] D[sub s][sup (*)+] D*[sup -])= (1.97[+-] 0.15[+-] 0.30[+-] 0.49)%, where the first error is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third is the error due to the D[sub s][sup+][yields][phi][pi][sup+] branching fraction uncertainty. From the B[sup 0][yields] D[sub s][sup (*)+] D*[sup -] angular distributions, they measure the fraction of longitudinal polarization[Lambda][sub L]/[Lambda]= (51.9[+-] 5.0[+-] 2.8)%, which is consistent with theoretical predictions based on factorization.

Using data collected with the CLEO II detector at CESR, they determine[Beta](D[sub s][sup -][yields][phi][pi][sup -])/[Beta](D[sup 0][yields] K[sup -][pi][sup+])= 0.92[+-] 0.20(stat.)[+-] 0.11(syst.). Their measurement of[Beta](D[sup 0][yields] K[sup -][pi][sup+]) then gives[Beta](D[sub s][sup -][yields][phi][pi][sup -])= (3.59[+-] 0.77[+-] 0.48)%.

A partial reconstruction technique is used to measure?(B° → D*−D*{sub s}+) and the decay chain is fully reconstructed to measure the branching fraction product?(B° → D*− D*{sub s}+) x?(D{sub s}+ →??+). Comparing these two measurements provides a model-independent determination of the D{sub s}+ →??+ branching fraction. They obtain?(B° → D*−D*{sub s}+) = (1.88 ± 0.09 ± 0.17)% and?(D{sub s}+ →??+) = (4.81 ± 0.52 ± 0.38)%, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic.

Book excerpt: Using 65 million {Upsilon}(4S) {yields} B{bar B} events collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e{sup +}e{sup -} storage ring at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, they measure the color-favored branching fractions {Beta}({bar B}{sup 0} {yields} D{sup +}{pi}{sup -}) = (2.63 {+-} 0.05 {+-} 0.22) x 10{sup -3}, {Beta}({bar B}{sup 0} {yields} D*{sup +}{pi}{sup -}) = (2.79 {+-} 0.08 {+-} 0.18) x 10{sup -3}, {Beta}(B{sup -} {yields} D{sup 0}{pi}{sup -}) = (4.90 {+-} 0.07 {+-} 0.23) x 10{sup -3} and {Beta}(B{sup -} {yields} D*{sup 0} {pi}{sup -}) = (5.52 {+-} 0.17 {+-} 0.43) x 10{sup -3}, where the first error is statistical and the second is systematic. With these results and the current world average for the branching fraction for the color-suppressed decay {bar B}{sup 0} {yields} D{sup (*)0}{pi}{sup 0}, the cosines of the strong phase difference {delta} between the I = 1/2 and I = 3/2 isospin amplitudes are determined to be cos{sigma} = 0.860{sub -0.006-0.028}{sup +0.007+0.029} for the {bar B} {yields} D{pi} process and cos{sigma} = 0.917{sub -0.016-0.051}{sup +0.018+0.059} for the {bar B} {yields} D*{pi} process. The results for cos{delta} suggest that final-state interactions are presented in the D{pi} system.

These results are preliminary.

They present the first measurement of the ratio of branching fractions?(B{sub s}° → D{sub s}−?+?+?−)/?(B° → D−?+?+?−) = 1.05 ± 0.10(stat.) ± 0.22(syst.). They also update their measurement of?(B{sub s}° → D{sub s}−?+)/?(B° → D−?+) to 1.13 ± 0.08(stat.) ± 0.23(syst.) improving the statistical uncertainty by more than a factor of two. They find?(B{sub s}° → D{sub s}−?+) = [3.8 ± 0.3(stat.) ± 1.3(syst.)] x 10−3 and?(B{sub s}° → D{sub s}−?+?+?−) = [8.4 ± 0.8(stat.) ± 3.2(syst.)] x 10−3.

Charge conjugate decays are implicitly included. A signal of 2005 ± 104 events for the decay D° → K+?− is obtained using the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider. The data set corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 0.35 fb−1 produced in {bar p}p collisions at √s = 1.96 TeV. Assuming no mixing, they find R{sub B} = [4.05 ± 0.21(stat) ± 0.11(syst)] x 10−3. This measurement is consistent with the world average, and comparable in accuracy with the best measurements from other experiments.
