From a sample of -50,000 Z° events, a sample enriched in Z° → b{bar b} was selected by applying an impact parameter tag. The lifetime was extracted from the decay length distribution of inclusive vertices reconstructed in three dimensions. A binned maximum likelihood method yielded an average B hadron lifetime of?{sub B} = 1.577±0.032(stat.)±0.046(syst.) ps.

Book excerpt: We have measured the average B hadron lifetime from Z° {r arrow} b{bar b} events using the Mark II detector at the SLC. We use an impact parameter tag, requiring two or more tracks with significant impact parameter ([delta]) in a hemisphere, to obtain a 40% efficiency and an 80% B-purity. The [Sigma][delta] distribution from charged tracks in the hemisphere opposite the tag is used to fit for [tau]{sub b}. From 53 tagged B decays we find [tau]{sub b} = 1.63{sub -0.40}{sup +0.64}(stat) {plus minus}0.16(syst) psec (preliminary), consistent with the world average. This method can be competitive with [tau]{sub b} measurements using high P{sub T} leptons and has a different sensitivity to [tau](B)/[tau](B°).

By means of a precision inner drift chamber, the impact parameters of these leptons are measured with respect to the B production point. From this impact parameter distribution, the B hadron lifetime is found to be 0.98 +- 0.12 +- 0.13 ps. This measurement can be used to place constraints models of quark mixing. 11 refs., 2 figs., 2 tabs.

In addition, data collected with MAC before the vertex chamber was installed have been re-analyzed using the new method. The combined result for the B lifetime is tau/sub b/ = (1.16 +- 0.16(stat.) +- 0.07(syst.)ps) x (1 +- 0.15), where the last factor is the scale. 12 refs., 2 figs.

Book excerpt: The average b-hadron lifetime has been measured using a high statistics sample of[ital B][r-arrow][ital J]/[psi][Chi] decays recorded with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We use a sample with an integrated luminosity of[approx] 90[ital pb][sup -1] recorded during the 1994-95 running period. The decay vertices of[approx] 62656 inclusive[ital J]/[psi][r-arrow][mu][sup+][mu][sup -] candidates have been reconstructed using information from a silicon vertex-detector. The measured[ital B]lifetime, which is the average over all b-hadrons produced in[ital p][ital[anti p]] collisions at[radical]s= 1.8 TeV weighted by their branching ratios into[ital J]/[psi], is 1.524[+-] 0.015 ([ital stat])[sup+0.035][sub -0.026] ([ital sys]) ps. The precision of this measurement is significantly improved compared to the inclusive lifetime measurement published previously using[approx] 10[ital pb][sup -1].
